Epic Games error code AS-3 means the Epic Games Launcher cannot establish the connection it needs with Epic services. It does not necessarily mean your internet is offline. The cause may be an Epic outage, launcher cache corruption, VPN or proxy settings, DNS or Winsock problems, firewall or antivirus filtering, router restrictions, or a Windows configuration issue.
Start by checking the Epic Games Public Status page. If Epic is operating normally, work through the fixes below in order, beginning with the safest and fastest tests.

What does Epic error AS-3 mean?
AS-3 is a broad Epic Games Store connection error. It identifies a failure to connect to or authenticate with Epic services, but it does not identify the exact component responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou may see AS-3 when:
- Epic Games Launcher cannot sign you in
- Store pages fail to load
- Game downloads or updates will not start
- A game cannot authenticate with Epic Online Services
- Epic reports “No connection” while browsers and other applications work normally
Epic’s connection guidance covers several possible causes, including service outages, proxy or VPN software, DNS problems, firewall and antivirus filtering, router issues, and modified Windows network settings. See Epic’s official AS-3 support page.

1. Check whether Epic Games is down
Before changing Windows settings, open the Epic Games Public Status page and check:
- Epic Games Store
- Login
- Epic Online Services
- Game Services
- Download and Installation
- The individual game’s services, if only one game is affected
If one of these components has an active incident, local repairs may not help. Wait for Epic to resolve the problem and try again after the status changes.
As a dated example, the status history showed no incidents reported on August 16, 2026. On August 17, Epic recorded an unresolved issue affecting some Windows 10 users when installing or updating Epic Games Store titles, and it remained visible on August 18. That incident was not explicitly identified as AS-3, so it should be treated as a snapshot—not a permanent explanation for the error.
2. Run the two-minute connection tests
- Close and reopen Epic Games Launcher.
- Restart the Windows PC.
- Restart the modem and router, then wait for the connection to return.
- Open a normal website and the Epic Games website in a browser.
- Test another device on the same network.
- Connect the PC to a phone hotspot and test Epic again.
The hotspot test quickly separates local-PC problems from home-network problems:
- Epic fails on every device and network: an Epic-side outage or account/service problem is more likely.
- Only one Windows PC fails: investigate the launcher, Windows, proxy, firewall, antivirus, or Hosts file.
- Every device on home Wi-Fi fails: investigate the router, ISP, DNS, parental controls, or network filtering.
- Hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not: focus on the home router, ISP, DNS, or network restrictions.
Epic recommends restarting networking equipment and testing another connection in its connection troubleshooting guidance.
3. Disable VPN and proxy settings
VPN clients, corporate proxies, ad-blocking network tools, and traffic-scanning utilities can interfere with Epic’s services. A VPN may be useful as a comparison test, but it is not a universal fix and may itself cause connection problems.

Turn off the Windows manual proxy
- Open Start.
- Search for Proxy Settings.
- Open Proxy Settings (System Settings).
- Under Manual Proxy Setup, switch the proxy off.
On a work, school, or managed business network, do not remove an organization-required proxy without permission.
Reset the WinHTTP proxy
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
netsh winhttp reset proxy
Restart Epic Games Launcher afterward. Epic also advises checking for an http_proxy environment variable if the issue continues. Its current instructions are available in the Epic proxy troubleshooting guide.
4. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache
Clearing the launcher’s web cache is a safe, targeted repair and should not remove installed games.
- Exit Epic completely. Open the system-tray overflow area, right-click the Epic Games icon, and select Exit.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete these folders if they are present:
webcache
webcache_4147
webcache_4430
- Reopen Epic Games Launcher and test the connection.
Delete only those cache folders. Do not delete the entire EpicGamesLauncher folder or any game-installation folder. The launcher may rebuild interface data the next time it starts. See Epic’s official cache instructions.
5. Reset Windows networking
DNS flushing is different from changing DNS providers. The following commands refresh local Windows networking and the current network lease.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
netsh winsock reset
- Restart Windows.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Then reopen Epic Games Launcher.
These commands reset the Winsock catalog, release and renew the DHCP address lease, and clear locally cached DNS entries. They do not automatically switch your PC to Cloudflare, Google, or another DNS provider. Epic documents this sequence in its Windows DNS and Winsock instructions.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
6. Consider changing DNS servers
Changing DNS servers is an optional diagnostic step, not a guaranteed AS-3 fix. It may help when your ISP’s resolver is returning stale or failed lookups, but it will not repair an Epic outage, blocked firewall rule, broken VPN, faulty router, account problem, or unrelated launcher bug.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 labels can differ slightly. Use Microsoft’s current networking documentation for the exact IPv4 DNS path for your edition, and record the original settings before changing them. Avoid claiming that one public DNS provider is universally fastest; performance depends on location and ISP.
7. Check Windows Firewall and antivirus filtering
Security software can block Epic’s launcher or its network traffic, particularly after an update. Do not leave protection disabled.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For a controlled test, briefly pause only the third-party antivirus web or network protection.
- Reopen Epic and test AS-3.
- If the error disappears, immediately re-enable protection.
- Create a narrowly scoped exception for Epic Games Launcher, or contact the security vendor for the correct rule.
For Windows Firewall, open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall and check that Epic Games Launcher is allowed on the appropriate network. The exact controls differ between Windows editions and third-party security products.
Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall, uninstall antivirus as an early step, or allow broad exceptions without understanding what they permit. Epic’s guidance covers firewall and antivirus testing in its connection troubleshooting article.
8. Check the clock, Windows updates, and Hosts file
Synchronize the system clock
Open Windows date and time settings and enable automatic time synchronization. Incorrect system time can interfere with authentication and encrypted connections.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Review the Hosts file only as an advanced step
A modified Hosts file can redirect or block Epic service domains. Back it up before changing anything. Do not delete entries added by an employer, school, VPN, ad blocker, or security tool unless you understand their purpose. If earlier steps fail, follow Microsoft’s current procedure for restoring the Hosts file rather than copying an unverified template from a third-party guide.
Epic includes Hosts-file review and Windows updates among its broader connection troubleshooting steps.
9. Run Epic Games Launcher as administrator once
Administrator mode can expose a permissions problem, but it is not a general network repair and should not be the permanent default.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher.
- Right-click its shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Test sign-in, the Store, or the affected download.
If Epic works only with elevated permissions, investigate folder permissions or security software instead of routinely running all software as administrator. Epic lists this test in its launcher troubleshooting guidance.

10. Reinstall Epic Games Launcher only after other fixes
Reinstallation is a late-stage option, not the first response to AS-3. It cannot fix an Epic outage, an ISP block, or a proxy that remains configured after reinstalling.
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices

Before reinstalling:
- Confirm where your installed games are stored.
- Do not delete game folders unless you are specifically repairing a damaged installation.
- Expect to sign in again and complete two-factor authentication if enabled.
- Keep in mind that the problem may return if security software or network settings caused it.
Epic lists reinstalling the launcher among its broader troubleshooting options. If the connection steps fail, contact Epic Games Support rather than repeatedly making increasingly risky system changes.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
| What you observe | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| Browsers and Steam work, but Epic alone fails | Check Epic status, then proxy, cache, firewall, antivirus, and DNS. |
| A phone hotspot fixes AS-3 | Investigate the home router, ISP, DNS, parental controls, or network filtering. |
| A VPN changes the result | Suspect routing or ISP filtering, but do not assume a permanent VPN is the right solution. |
| The issue began after antivirus installation or an update | Test web/network protection briefly, restore it, and create a targeted exception if confirmed. |
| Epic works after reboot but later fails | Investigate background proxy services, VPN processes, scheduled security scans, or launcher processes. |
| Only downloads or updates fail | Check Download/Installation and the specific game service on Epic’s status page. |
| Only one game fails | Verify whether the issue is game-specific rather than a launcher-wide AS-3 problem. |
| The PC is on hotel, school, or work Wi-Fi | Ask the network administrator; managed networks may block required domains or traffic. |
What not to do for AS-3
- Do not reset Windows before testing another network and checking Epic’s status.
- Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall or antivirus.
- Do not delete the entire Epic launcher directory or installed games.
- Do not edit the Registry without a specific, verified reason.
- Do not port-forward, alter MTU settings, or buy a VPN, driver updater, PC cleaner, or network optimizer as an early response.
If AS-3 still appears
Contact Epic Support and include useful diagnostic details:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 version
- Epic Games Launcher version
- Whether Epic works on a phone hotspot or another network
- Whether a VPN or proxy is installed
- Whether antivirus or firewall testing changed the result
- When the problem began, including your time zone
- Launcher logs, if Epic Support requests them
This information helps support determine whether the failure is local, network-wide, security-related, or service-side.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing the Epic Games Launcher cache delete my installed games?
No. Delete only the webcache, webcache_4147, and webcache_4430 folders inside %localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSaved. Do not delete the launcher directory or game-installation folders.
Does ipconfig /flushdns change my DNS provider?
No. It clears locally cached DNS entries. Switching to a different DNS provider is a separate Windows network-configuration change.
Should I use a VPN to fix AS-3?
Use a VPN only as a temporary comparison test if appropriate. A changed result may indicate routing or ISP trouble, but a VPN can also interfere with Epic and is not a universal fix.
The Bottom Line
Check Epic’s status first, then use a hotspot test to separate Epic or home-network problems from a Windows-only issue. After that, disable proxy or VPN software, clear the three launcher cache folders, reset Winsock and DNS, and review security filtering. Reinstall only after these non-destructive steps fail.
