“Epic Games.exe” is not the filename Epic documents for its Windows launcher. Epic identifies the launcher executable as EpicGamesLauncher.exe. The normal installation path is C:Program FilesEpic GamesLauncherEngineBinariesWin64EpicGamesLauncher.exe; an Early Preview build can use C:Users<Username>AppDataLocalEpic GamesLauncherEpicGamesLauncher.exe. A file literally named Epic Games.exe should therefore be treated as an unidentified program until you verify its complete path, publisher signature, source and security-scan results.
What Epic Games’ official launcher file is called
On Windows, Epic’s documented launcher filename is EpicGamesLauncher.exe—with no space between “Epic” and “Games.” Epic Support gives this default path:

The path can differ if you selected another drive or folder during installation, so a different location is not by itself proof of malware. The exact filename, publisher signature and installation source matter together. Epic’s published support material does not provide a hash for a file named Epic Games.exe, so the name alone cannot authenticate it.
Launcher platforms and current preview requirements
Epic distributes its launcher for Windows, macOS and Linux. The current preview information describes these requirements:

These are preview requirements and can change as Epic updates the client. Epic says the preview automatically removes the legacy launcher while carrying over purchases, installed games, cloud saves and progress. During the preview, Epic recommends keeping the legacy launcher for competitive games such as Fortnite and Rocket League while integration is finalized.

Why a file named “Epic Games.exe” deserves checking
Windows allows any program to use a convincing filename. A name containing “Epic Games” does not prove that Epic Games, Inc. created or distributed the file. It could be a renamed copy, an installer left by another program, or an executable bundled with an unofficial download. Conversely, a legitimate launcher installed in a custom folder may not be in the default directory. Verification must use several indicators rather than a filename or location alone.
Epic’s Terms of Service describe integrity tools intended to detect fraud and cheats, including unauthorized bots, hacks, add-ons, malware, scripts and mods. That policy is a reason to avoid unverified executables, not proof that every unusual process is infected. Do not run a file simply because its name resembles the launcher.
Verify “Epic Games.exe” safely, step by step

Record the complete path
Right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Properties, and note the full path shown on the General tab. If you found it in Task Manager, right-click the process and choose Open file location. A path under Epic’s documented launcher folders is consistent with an installation; a location such as a temporary-download folder, a crack or cheat directory, a removable drive, or an unexpected user-data subfolder requires extra scrutiny.

Check the digital signature
In Properties, open Digital Signatures. Select the signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Epic Games, Inc. Check the signing time and whether Windows says the certificate chain is valid. An absent or invalid signature is a warning, not a final malware verdict: some legitimate files can be unsigned, and a malicious file can carry a forged or stolen certificate.

Compare the filename and installation path
The documented launcher name is
EpicGamesLauncher.exe. Compare the suspicious file character by character, including spaces, extra extensions and look-alike letters. Then compare its folder with the two documented locations. A file calledEpic Games.exedoes not become official merely because it sits beside a genuine launcher. -
Inspect version and publisher details
On the Details tab, review Company, Product name, File description, Original filename and File version. Consistent Epic metadata supports authenticity; blank, contradictory or misspelled fields increase the risk. Treat metadata as supporting evidence because it can be edited.

Calculate a hash when you need a precise comparison
Open PowerShell in the file’s folder and run:
Get-FileHash -Algorithm SHA256 -LiteralPath ".Epic Games.exe"Save the resulting SHA-256 value with the file’s version and path. Epic’s reviewed support pages do not publish a reference hash for this alternate filename, so a hash is useful for comparing the same file across machines or with a hash supplied directly by Epic—not for proving authenticity by itself.

Scan before opening it
Right-click the file and choose the scan option provided by your current endpoint-protection software. You can also open Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, then use a Custom scan on the file or its containing folder. Allow the security product to update first. A clean result lowers risk but cannot establish that the file is Epic’s official launcher.

Use a reputable multi-engine check when the origin is unclear
If the file came from an unofficial mirror, a mod, a cheat, an account tool or a compressed archive, submit it to a reputable multi-engine malware service only if your privacy and organizational policies permit uploading it. Do not upload proprietary game files or personal data. Treat multiple detections as a strong reason to quarantine the file; a single generic detection can be a false positive and should be investigated with the security vendor.

Quarantine suspicious copies
If the signature is invalid, the path is unrelated to your installation, or the file came from an untrusted download, do not double-click it. Disconnect the machine from the internet if you suspect active malicious behavior, quarantine or delete the file through your security software, empty the Recycle Bin, and change important passwords from a separate trusted device if you entered credentials after running it. Reinstall the launcher from Epic’s official download page rather than from the same package.
Fix a genuine Epic launcher that will not open
Clear the launcher web cache
Epic’s documented cache repair targets display problems and errors that prevent the launcher or games from working. Follow this sequence:

- Press Windows key + R, enter

webcache,webcache_4147andwebcache_4430if those folders exist. Do not delete unrelated folders. - Start the launcher again. It will rebuild the cache; the first launch can take longer while new files are created.
Cache deletion removes temporary web-interface data, not your purchased games or cloud-save records. If a folder is absent, continue with the folders that are present.

Check compatibility settings and the executable location
Open the launcher’s installation directory, right-click EpicGamesLauncher.exe, choose Properties, and open the Compatibility tab. Review any compatibility mode, administrator setting or high-DPI override that was enabled manually. An incorrect override can change launch behavior; record the current settings before changing them so you can undo the change. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance also uses the default executable path above when diagnosing performance or startup problems.
Reinstall only from an official source
If the documented launcher is missing or damaged, uninstall the launcher through Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label can vary by Windows version), restart Windows, and download a fresh installer from Epic’s official site. Avoid “repacked,” cracked or modified installers. Confirm the newly installed file is named EpicGamesLauncher.exe and recheck its signature after installation.
How to distinguish two similarly named files
When more than one candidate appears, compare the same six attributes for each file:

What the verification result means
It is the documented launcher
If the file is named EpicGamesLauncher.exe, is in an expected Epic launcher folder, carries a valid Epic Games, Inc. signature and came from an official installation, it is consistent with the legitimate client. You can allow it to run, subject to your normal security policy. A custom installation folder still deserves the same signature and provenance checks.
It is literally “Epic Games.exe” but appears harmless
Keep treating it as unidentified. Do not rename it to make it look official. Record its path, signature, version, hash and origin; then contact the publisher or distributor that supplied it. Without a verifiable source, remove it and install the official launcher instead.
It fails the signature or security checks
Do not execute it again. Quarantine it, run a full security scan, and review recently installed programs and browser downloads for the source. If you entered an Epic password while it was running, change that password and enable available account protections from a clean device. Restore games through the official launcher rather than copying the suspicious executable back.
