Fortnite creator Andre “Typical Gamer” Rebelo told GamesBeat that a DMCA complaint could temporarily remove an island from discovery while Epic reviewed it, potentially disrupting its momentum. The same report described a separate alleged tactic: disguising a prompt to favorite an island as a way to claim an in-game reward. These are reported complaints, not findings that a creator broke copyright law or that every DMCA notice leads to a suspension.
What the complaints involved
GamesBeat published its report on April 4, 2024, and updated it on June 18, 2025. It covered two distinct disputes among Fortnite island creators: alleged misuse of copyright complaints against competing islands, and prompts that allegedly misled players into favoriting an island. The report does not establish that any specific creator filed a bad-faith claim or resolve the allegations through a formal finding. GamesBeat’s report.
How the alleged DMCA tactic could affect an island
UEFN, or Unreal Editor for Fortnite, lets creators make Fortnite islands that compete for player attention and discovery. Rebelo told GamesBeat that, in the process he observed, a DMCA complaint could lead to a ten-day map suspension while Epic considered the complaint’s merits. He said the map would be removed from discovery during that period, which could damage the momentum of an island that was gaining traction.
“That was guilty until proven innocent,” Rebelo said, describing his view of the process. He also told GamesBeat: “The problem is that this 10-day takedown period removes [the map] from discovery, whether it’s legit or not. And discovery would essentially be the algorithm that can make or break a map.” These are his descriptions of the experience and potential impact, not evidence that all notices result in a ten-day suspension or that the process works identically for every creator.

GamesBeat reported that Rebelo’s map was later restored and that another map targeted by a DMCA strike was reinstated. Those restorations show that the reported removals were not necessarily permanent; they do not, by themselves, prove that a complaint was intentionally abusive or explain what review procedure applied in every case.
What “like cheating” means in this report
“Like cheating” refers to an alleged deceptive prompt, not to a conventional gameplay exploit. Rebelo described prompts placed over or near an interaction such as picking up an item, making it appear that favoriting an island was needed to get the expected reward. A player could favorite the island and receive a thank-you message without receiving the item they expected.

Epic’s Fortnite Creators account (@FNCreate), in a post reproduced by GamesBeat from April 4, 2024, said: “Reminder: Tricking players by asking them to like or favorite an island for a fake reward isn’t cool and is a violation of our rules. These are scams and we won’t allow it.” Epic’s Community Rules also prohibit cheating, griefing, teaming, and exploiting bugs or glitches, and direct players to in-game reporting or player support for problematic conduct. That general guidance does not establish what enforcement occurred against any particular island in the report.
What Epic said about enforcement
GamesBeat quoted an Epic spokesperson saying the company takes bad-faith DMCA use seriously and does not tolerate bogus copyright claims. The spokesperson also said people found abusing the DMCA system may face serious legal consequences and Epic account bans.

On fake-reward favorite prompts, the spokesperson called the practice a rules violation and a relatively new trend that had become a focus for enforcement. The spokesperson said creators who repeatedly try to scam players could face monetization penalties, island removal, and account suspension. What the reported figures do—and do not—show
GamesBeat reported that UEFN generated $320 million in creator payouts in the preceding year. The article did not identify an underlying Epic financial document for that figure, so it should be understood as GamesBeat’s reported number.

The report’s latest stated update is June 18, 2025. It does not establish whether Epic later changed the UEFN DMCA process, whether additional enforcement actions followed, or whether a formal finding resolved the specific complaints. Readers should treat the ten-day suspension account and the alleged tactics as reported claims, and Epic’s enforcement descriptions as the company’s response as quoted by GamesBeat—not as a complete statement of current policy.
