Epic’s November 2021 notice said Fortnite China would stop accepting new registrations and downloads on November 1 at 11 a.m., then shut off its servers on November 15 at 11 a.m. The notice applied to China’s beta test service—not Fortnite worldwide—and described the test as ending.
What happened to Fortnite in China?
Epic told players that “Fortnite China’s Beta test will be ending, and the servers will be closed soon.” That wording is TechCrunch’s English translation of Epic’s player notice, which thanked participants in the beta test and set out two separate cutoff dates. TechCrunch reproduced the translated notice and linked to Epic’s announcement.

- November 1, 2021, at 11 a.m.: New-user registration and the game download portal closed.
- November 15, 2021, at 11 a.m.: The servers were due to turn off. After that, players could no longer connect through the WeGame client.
These were the announced dates for the China service. They were not a global Fortnite shutdown notice.
What was Fortress Night?
Contemporaneous reports referred to the China-specific version as Fortress Night and described it as an altered test version of Fortnite. It was not simply the international release under a different regional label. Reporting noted changes to content and monetization.

Axios and The Straits Times reported that the test had not received government approval for a formal launch and monetization. Axios quoted analyst Daniel Ahmad, who said the game never officially launched in China.
Was Fortnite banned in China?
The available reports do not establish a formal ban announcement. They describe the end of Epic’s China beta service and report that it had not secured approval for a formal launch and monetization. Those points are not the same as evidence that authorities announced a ban on Fortnite.

Why did Fortnite China close?
Epic’s notice gave the cutoff dates but no detailed reason. The closure came amid tighter regulation of gaming in China: reporting described limits that restricted minors’ online gaming to three hours a week and slower approvals for new titles. That is relevant context, but the sources do not show Epic publicly saying those policies caused this particular closure.
TechCrunch discussed regulatory pressure and the service’s economic viability as possible factors. Axios reported that Epic pointed it to the closure notice rather than providing a substantive explanation. Jeff Sue, general manager at Mintegral, observed that “most Chinese publishers like NetEase and Tencent Gaming have foreseen restrictions and it plays a role in their global acquisitions.” His comment concerned industry strategy; it was not an explanation from Epic for Fortnite China’s shutdown.

What the reported player and view counts mean
The Straits Times, citing AFP, reported that Fortnite had more than 350 million users globally in 2021 and that a related Weibo hashtag had received 470 million views. Neither figure is a count of Fortnite China players: the first is global, and the second measures hashtag views. The cited reports do not establish a reliable China-specific player total.
