Epic Games has said it hopes Nintendo characters will appear in Fortnite someday, but there is no confirmed collaboration, character, or release date. The idea has come up before: former Epic creative chief Donald Mustard said a proposed Samus Aran appearance stalled over disagreement about which platforms could show Nintendo characters.
Why Samus Aran did not appear in Fortnite
Former Epic Games chief creative officer Donald Mustard described the earlier proposal in an April 2024 interview with Game File, later reported by GamesRadar+ and Video Games Chronicle. In Mustard’s account, Nintendo wanted its characters in Fortnite only on Nintendo platforms; Epic wanted the game to offer the same experience across devices.

“They got really hung up on their characters showing up on platforms that weren’t their platforms.”

Mustard also said Nintendo would have been “thrilled” to have its characters in Fortnite, but only on its own platform. He explained Epic’s position this way: “For me and for all of Epic, we’re like, ‘That is an absolute must. We want to make sure that Fortnite is the same experience, no matter what screen or device you’re playing on.’”
This is Mustard’s retrospective account of a proposal that did not proceed, not a direct statement from Nintendo. Mustard left Epic in 2023, so his remarks do not establish what Nintendo or Epic is negotiating now.

What Epic has said about a future Nintendo collaboration
In a later statement reported by Hitmarker, Epic executive vice president Saxs Persson said: “Nintendo has their strategy and we have our strategy, and we hope at some point to use their characters. Our players would love it.”
That supports describing Epic as hopeful, but it is not evidence of an agreement. The statement does not confirm active negotiations, identify a character, or give a timeline. Hitmarker’s report attributes the remark to an Axios interview; the available report does not establish its original publication date.

Did Nintendo say no to Fortnite?
There is no direct Nintendo statement about the proposed Samus appearance in the cited reporting. The careful answer is that Mustard said the proposal encountered a disagreement over platform exclusivity: Nintendo wanted its characters limited to its own platform, while Epic wanted cross-platform consistency. That account does not establish a blanket Nintendo refusal of every possible Fortnite collaboration or prove that the same condition remains in force today.

Yes. Nintendo lists Fortnite as a free download for Nintendo Switch 2 on its official store. The free download is the game, not the console; owning a Switch 2 is not required to play Fortnite on other supported platforms. The listing does not indicate that Nintendo characters are part of the game.
