If the Epic Games Launcher will not open, opens and immediately closes, or remains stuck loading, start with the low-risk checks: look for an Epic service outage, install any launcher update, and verify that your operating system is supported. Then clear the launcher’s web cache. Only after those steps should you try administrator mode, a clean startup, system-file repair, or reinstallation.
The instructions below separate Windows and macOS because the cache locations, logging commands, and reinstall process are different. Follow them in order; stop when the launcher works.

Start with the checks that can explain a sudden failure
Check Epic’s service status
Open the Epic Games Server Status page in a browser and look for an incident affecting login, the store, or launcher services. If Epic is reporting a system-wide failure, local repairs will not restore the launcher; wait for the incident to be resolved and try again. This is especially important when the launcher worked normally until a particular time and several Epic features fail together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck for a launcher update
Epic’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for launcher updates before deeper repairs. If an update is offered, install it and restart the computer. An outdated client can fail even when Windows or macOS itself is working normally.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Confirm the operating system is supported
Current Epic requirements list Windows 10 (64-bit), Windows 11, or macOS 13.5 and newer. Epic stopped official launcher support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and 32-bit Windows 10 in June 2024. If your computer is on one of those unsupported Windows editions, cache deletion and reinstallation are unlikely to provide a lasting solution; upgrading the operating system is the appropriate path.

Fix the Epic Games Launcher on Windows
1. Close every launcher process
Before touching files, close the launcher if a window is partly visible. If it appears to be running in the background, use Task Manager to end Epic Games Launcher processes, then wait a few seconds. A cache folder can be locked while a process is active, so this step prevents an incomplete deletion.
2. Clear the web cache
Epic documents corrupted web-cache data as a reason the launcher may fail to start. The deletion affects cached interface data, not the launcher installer itself.

- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncher, thenSaved. - Delete
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430if they are present. Do not create folders that are absent. - Restart Windows and launch Epic Games Launcher normally.
The launcher recreates required cache data. The first start after deletion can take longer while that data is rebuilt. If the launcher still closes immediately, continue rather than repeatedly deleting the same folders.
3. Try elevated mode once
- Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
If elevated mode works but a normal launch does not, the failure may involve permissions or another process that starts with the regular user session. Do not permanently run every application with elevated rights; use this as a diagnostic test and then investigate the underlying conflict.
4. Update the graphics driver
Epic lists graphics-driver updates among its launcher troubleshooting steps. Install the current driver supplied for your graphics hardware, restart Windows, and test the launcher again. A driver update is particularly worth trying when the problem began after a Windows update or when the launcher window appears briefly and then disappears.

5. Test with background applications disabled
Background applications can interfere with the launcher. Temporarily close overlays, monitoring utilities, screen recorders, and other nonessential startup software, then try a clean launch. If the launcher opens, re-enable those applications one at a time to identify the conflict. Restore normal startup settings after testing so you do not leave unrelated programs disabled.
6. Repair Windows system files
Epic places System File Checker before a Windows reinstall of the launcher. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to finish, follow any repair message it provides, restart Windows, and test Epic Games Launcher. If the scan cannot complete or reports that it could not repair files, keep that result for your support ticket instead of repeatedly running the same command.

7. Reinstall only as a later step
Reinstallation is disruptive and should follow the outage, support, cache, driver, background-process, and system-file checks. Epic warns that its reinstall process removes installed games, so confirm that consequence before proceeding and make sure you are prepared to download those games again.
- Close Epic Games Launcher completely.
- Run
sfc /scannowfirst if you have not already done so, then restart Windows. - Open Windows Settings, go to Apps, locate Epic Games Launcher, and choose Uninstall.
- Download the latest installer from the Epic Games Store and install it.
- Sign in and verify whether the launcher now opens before starting any game downloads.
If the new installation fails in the same way, do not keep uninstalling and reinstalling. Collect logs and give Epic Support the exact Windows edition, the time of the failure, and the steps that already produced no change.

2. Remove the macOS web cache
- Open Finder and choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Enter
~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncherand press Return. - Move the
webcachefolder to the Trash. - Empty the Trash.
- Relaunch Epic Games Launcher.
This is the macOS equivalent of clearing the Windows web-cache folders. If the folder is missing, leave it alone and proceed to the next test.
3. Update graphics software and reduce background interference
Install available macOS updates and graphics-driver updates supplied for your hardware where applicable. Also quit background applications that could interfere with the launcher and test again. Reopen those applications individually if the launcher starts so you can identify a conflict without permanently changing your normal setup.
4. Reinstall only after the cache test
Epic’s macOS reinstall procedure removes the application and the Epic folders it lists under ~/Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Caches, ~/Library/Preferences, ~/Library/Logs, and ~/Library/Cookies. Because the reinstall removes installed games according to Epic’s warning, treat it as a last resort and make sure you understand what will need to be downloaded again.

- Remove the Epic folders specified by Epic in the Application Support, Caches, Preferences, Logs, and Cookies Library locations.

Collect logs when the launcher still will not open
Windows log location
Windows launcher logs are stored in:
%localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSavedLogs
Sort by date and copy the most recent files. Keep the originals unchanged so support can see the complete entries.
macOS debug logging
- Open Terminal.
- Run
open "/Applications/Epic Games Launcher.app" --args -debuglogging. - Reproduce the failure, whether that means no window, an immediate close, or a loading screen that never completes.
- Close the app.
- Open
~/Library/Logs/Unreal Engine/EpicGamesLauncherand collect the newest logs.
Attach the recent logs to an Epic Support ticket and include your operating-system version, whether cache deletion changed anything, whether administrator mode worked, and the approximate time of the failure. Those details let support match the log entries to your attempt instead of asking you to repeat every preliminary step.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling first: it is the most disruptive option and Epic warns that installed games are removed.
- Deleting the wrong cache: use the exact Windows Saved path or the macOS EpicGamesLauncher cache path; do not remove unrelated browser or system caches.
- Ignoring the operating-system requirement: Windows 7, Windows 8, and 32-bit Windows 10 no longer receive official launcher support.
- Leaving a clean startup in place: restore disabled background applications after the test and re-enable them one at a time if needed.
- Sending no evidence: logs are still available when the graphical launcher cannot open and are the most useful material for escalation.
