Epic alleged that Sebastian Araujo used cheats to win at least $6,850 across Fortnite tournaments; the court later entered a $175,521 default judgment against him. Those figures are not equivalent: the first is the alleged tournament winnings, while the second is the court’s award of statutory damages and attorneys’ fees.
What Epic alleged Araujo did
In Epic Games, Inc. v. Sebastian Araujo, Epic alleged that Araujo cheated in Fortnite tournaments between June 19 and October 11, 2024. According to the case record, he played at least 839 tournament matches and earned winnings at least 36 times, for at least $6,850 in total.
Epic and the case record described the alleged use of cheat software, multiple fake accounts, and a hardware spoofer intended to evade hardware ID bans. These are allegations in the case; the court’s later default judgment was not the result of a contested trial establishing each claim after a defense.
Why the court ordered $175,521
Araujo did not defend the lawsuit, and the court entered default judgment. The reported award was $168,550 in statutory damages plus $6,971 in attorneys’ fees, for a total of $175,521. It was not simply an order to repay the at least $6,850 in alleged tournament winnings; the sums have different legal bases.

Epic also sought an additional $100,000 in statutory copyright damages. The court rejected that request as excessive, observing that the amount sought greatly exceeded the alleged gain while also noting the alleged efforts to hide the cheating.
“While the Court notes the amount sought by Plaintiff exceedingly surpasses Defendant’s alleged actual gain, $6,850, Defendant took significant measures to conceal the true scope of his cheating activities by creating multiple fake accounts and employing a hardware spoofer to circumvent detections.”

How the case fits Epic’s stated tournament policy
In a February 27, 2025 Fortnite anti-cheat update, Epic said tournament players found to have cheated face a one-year matchmaking ban, an immediate lifetime ban from tournaments, and potential loss of past tournament winnings. Epic also said it had recently announced a lawsuit against a tournament cheater and settled another case. That is the policy Epic described in that dated update; it does not establish whether the policy has changed since.
