Epic Games Logging Errors: Why They Happen and How to Fix Them

Epic Games logging errors can come from the Launcher, Epic Online Services, a game, or Unreal Engine. Learn where to find each log, how to identify the first real failure, and which fix to try safely.

Epic Games logging errors are a diagnostic category, not one universal failure. The remedy depends on whether the Epic Games Launcher, Epic Online Services, an installed game, or an Unreal Engine project is failing. Reproduce the problem, collect the correct log immediately, identify the earliest meaningful failure, and then apply the least destructive fix that matches the evidence.

“Epic Games logging errors” is not one specific error. The correct fix depends on whether the failure belongs to the Epic Games Launcher, Epic Online Services (EOS), an installed game, or an Unreal Engine project. The fastest reliable method is to reproduce the problem, collect the correct log immediately, find the earliest meaningful failure rather than the last warning, and then apply the least destructive fix that matches the evidence.

Do not treat every Warning line as the cause. A log records everything happening around a failure, including secondary errors created after the original problem.

First identify which Epic component is failing

What you see Most likely log source Start here
The Launcher crashes, will not open, cannot sign in, or cannot download or update Epic Games Launcher Enable Launcher debug logging and check the Launcher log
Installation, verification, updating, or uninstalling fails; you see an EOS or installation-service message Epic Online Services and Launcher installation services Collect the Launcher and EOS service logs, then check network and permissions
The Launcher opens but a particular game refuses to start Launcher plus the installed game Record the visible error code and verify the game files
A project or packaged Unreal game crashes with categories such as LogNet Unreal Engine project or runtime Inspect the Output Log and the project’s Saved/Logs files

This distinction matters. Clearing the Launcher web cache may help a stale Launcher session, but it will not by itself repair a broken Unreal project or prove that a game’s files are corrupt.

Collect the right log before changing anything

Reproduce the problem once, preferably with debug logging enabled, and write down:

  • the exact date and time of the failure;
  • the game, project, or Epic service involved;
  • your operating system and, where relevant, its version;
  • the action that triggered the error;
  • the exact visible error code or message; and
  • whether the failure happens with one game or with several.

The timestamp lets you compare Launcher, EOS, game, and system logs. That is often more useful than searching a large file from top to bottom without knowing when the failure occurred.

Windows: Launcher logs when the Launcher opens

  1. Open the Launcher.
  2. Select the Account icon, then Settings.
  3. Enable Debug Logging and select Enable Now.
  4. Reproduce the problem once.
  5. Return to Settings and select Show Logs.

After collecting the evidence, disable debug logging again. Leaving it enabled indefinitely creates larger, noisier logs and is unnecessary once the reproduction is complete. Epic’s current Launcher log-collection instructions cover this process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows: when the Launcher will not open

Right-click the Epic Games Launcher desktop shortcut and select Properties. In the shortcut’s Target field, add a space followed by -debuglogging after the existing target. Do not remove the existing executable path. Launch it, reproduce the problem, close the Launcher, and check:

C:Users[UserName]AppDataLocalEpicGamesLauncherSavedLogs

Replace [UserName] with your Windows account name. If the shortcut method does not work, use Epic’s support instructions rather than downloading a replacement executable or DLL from an unofficial site.

Windows: installation and EOS service logs

For an installation, update, verification, or uninstall problem, collect the four most recent Launcher log files as well as the newest relevant files from these EOS folders:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%Epic GamesEpic Online ServicesInstallHelperLogs
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%Epic GamesEpic Online ServicesMainServiceLogs

If the message says Epic Online Service Unavailable, do not send only the Launcher log. Epic also requests logs for the Bootstrapper, EOSInstaller, EpicOnlineServicesHost, and the system-wide EOS location:

C:ProgramDataEpicEpicOnlineServices

The exact set of folders can vary with the affected service, so use Epic’s official log-collection list for EOS and installation issues.

~/Library/Logs/'Unreal Engine'/EpicGamesLauncher

Attach the most recent relevant log when contacting support. Epic’s macOS instructions specifically say not to submit ZIP or RAR archives; provide the requested log file in the format its support page accepts.

Unreal Engine project logs

For an Unreal project, open the live log in the Editor through Window > Output Log. The saved text logs are in the project’s:

[Project folder]/Saved/Logs

The Output Log is useful while reproducing a problem. The saved file is better for searching, comparing timestamps, and sharing a repeatable failure. Unreal’s logging documentation explains categories, verbosity, custom logging, and command-line controls.

If the issue is related to networking, inspect the surrounding entries in categories such as LogNet. Lines involving UEngine::BroadcastNetworkFailure, UNetConnection::Close, or UActorChannel::Close can help establish where the network failure propagated. They are evidence about the failure path, not automatic proof of the original cause.

How to read an Epic or Unreal log without chasing noise

  1. Start at the reproduction time. Search backward and forward around the exact minute or second when the error appeared.
  2. Search for meaningful terms. Useful terms include Fatal, Error, Failed, Unable, Access denied, timeout, certificate, missing, corrupt, and network failure.
  3. Find the first causal-looking failure. A later crash, timeout, or service-disconnected message may simply be a consequence of an earlier missing file, denied permission, or failed connection.
  4. Read the surrounding context. Preserve several lines before and after the first meaningful entry. The component name, path, URL, operation, or account state in those lines may be more useful than the error word itself.
  5. Compare timestamps across sources. If the Launcher reports a timeout before EOS reports a service failure, the Launcher and network path deserve attention before reinstalling the game.
  6. Separate observation from inference. “The log reports access denied” is an observation. “An antivirus product blocked the file” is an inference that needs confirmation.

In Unreal Engine, log verbosity is not a simple list of “bad” and “good” messages. Epic documents the levels as Fatal, Error, Warning, Display, Log, Verbose, and VeryVerbose. A Fatal entry crashes the program even if logging is disabled. Ordinary Log entries are written to the log file but are not necessarily displayed on the console. A Warning may be harmless unless it is the first message that explains the subsequent failure.

Developers can use UE_LOG with custom categories and verbosity controls. The -LogCmds= command-line option can adjust logging at launch, and structured UE_LOGFMT logging was introduced in Unreal Engine 5.2. These are Unreal development controls, not fixes for a malfunctioning Epic Games Launcher.

Fix Epic logging-related problems in the safest order

You do not need to perform every step for every error. Match the branch to the log pattern and stop when the problem is resolved.

1. Check for an Epic service outage

Before repairing local files, check Epic’s service-status information and the outage guidance in its general Launcher troubleshooting article. Login failures, downloads, updates, matchmaking, and EOS availability can fail because a remote service is unavailable. Local cache deletion or reinstallation will not repair an incident on Epic’s side.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm the Launcher and operating system are supported

Epic’s currently listed Launcher requirements include Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11, and macOS 13.5 or later. Beta macOS versions are not supported according to the requirements page. The listed minimum hardware includes an Intel Core i3 or AMD FX processor, 4 GB of RAM, a DirectX 9.0c-compatible graphics processor or listed equivalent, and 3 GB of storage.

These are Launcher requirements, not a guarantee that a particular game will run. Check the game’s own requirements separately. Read Epic’s current Launcher system requirements before treating an unsupported operating system or graphics device as a cache problem.

3. Update the Epic Games Launcher

Open Settings. If you see Restart and Update, select it and allow the Launcher to restart. A stale Launcher can create symptoms that look like a bad web cache, an authentication failure, or installation corruption. If the Launcher cannot open, collect its logs first when possible and then use Epic’s supported repair path.

4. Clear the Launcher web cache

Cache removal makes the Launcher rebuild temporary interface and session data. It does not delete installed games or saved progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows

  1. Exit the Launcher completely, including its notification-area or system-tray process.
  2. Open File Explorer and enter %localappdata%EpicGamesLauncherSaved in the address bar.
  3. Delete the available folders named webcache, webcache_4147, and webcache_4430.
  4. Start the Launcher again.

macOS

  1. Quit the Launcher.
  2. Remove ~/Library/Caches/com.epicgames.EpicGamesLauncher/webcache.
  3. Empty the Trash.
  4. Relaunch Epic Games Launcher.

Use Epic’s web-cache clearing instructions if the folder names differ on your installation. Cache clearing is a reasonable fix for stale UI, login, or session symptoms; it is not a universal answer to crashes.

5. Test permissions without making administrator mode permanent

On Windows, right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If the error disappears, the log’s access-denied or permission entry deserves further investigation: check the installation folder, the destination drive, Windows security settings, and security software.

Administrator mode is best treated as a diagnostic test or a targeted workaround. It should not replace correcting an incorrectly protected folder or allowing a legitimate Epic component through security software. Epic documents this test in its Launcher permission troubleshooting.

6. Verify the affected game’s files

Use this step for a game-specific launch failure, especially LS-0014: Launch Failed. Epic defines LS-0014 as the game being unable to locate a file or directory it expects.

  1. Open Library in the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Open the game’s three-dot menu.
  3. Select Manage.
  4. Select Verify.

Verification compares the installation with the expected files and repairs files that are damaged or different. Epic says it does not affect saved data. If verification cannot repair the missing or damaged content, reinstall the game as the next game-specific step. See Epic’s guidance for LS-0014 and its file-verification procedure.

7. Isolate background applications

Background software can interfere with the Launcher or a game. If the log places an overlay, antivirus hook, recording utility, monitoring tool, or other third-party injector immediately before the failure, test with that software disabled according to its vendor’s instructions. These are possibilities, not universal causes.

For a broader test, Epic recommends reducing startup programs with a Windows clean boot or using macOS Safe Mode where appropriate. Restore normal startup settings after testing. Do not permanently disable security protection simply because a log contains a generic warning; identify the conflicting component first. Epic’s background-application troubleshooting explains the supported approach.

8. Update graphics drivers from an official source

Graphics initialization errors, Launcher crashes, and an unsupported-graphics-card message justify checking the driver and hardware requirements. Download the driver from the GPU manufacturer—NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel—or from the computer manufacturer when the PC uses an OEM-customized laptop or desktop driver. Avoid making a third-party driver updater your first move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that the graphics hardware meets the requirements and install the driver appropriate for the exact model and operating system. Epic’s unsupported-graphics-card guidance is the relevant starting point.

9. Check network, proxy, certificate, DNS, and firewall conditions

Use this branch when logs show timeout, certificate, proxy, DNS, authentication, download, or connection failures. Check the following in a sensible order:

  • Epic service status and whether other services or websites are reachable;
  • whether the computer’s date, time, and time zone are synchronized;
  • Windows or macOS proxy settings;
  • DNS behavior and whether a different network reproduces the problem;
  • firewall or security-software rules affecting the Launcher, game, or EOS;
  • the hosts file if it has been customized; and
  • port forwarding only when the specific game or network setup requires it.

On an enterprise, school, or managed network, Epic’s Launcher includes a Use Proxy setting. A self-signed or otherwise untrusted proxy certificate can prevent secure connections even when ordinary web browsing works. Do not bypass certificate validation casually; ask the network administrator to provide a properly trusted configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Epic’s connection troubleshooting guide covers proxy settings, DNS, clock synchronization, whitelisting, cache and hosts-file resets, port forwarding, and Windows Defender Firewall exceptions. The exact remedy depends on the network, so a timeout alone does not prove that the game, PC, or Epic service is defective.

10. Reinstall the Launcher only after preserving important information

Reinstallation is a last-resort Launcher repair, not the first response to an isolated warning. Epic’s Windows procedure includes running Windows System File Checker, restarting the computer, uninstalling the Launcher, and downloading the current installer.

There are two important consequences:

  • Reinstalling the Launcher removes installed games.
  • Epic says the Launcher currently does not automatically detect previously installed game files after removal, so do not assume a reinstall will reconnect existing installations.

Before proceeding, note your game installation locations, confirm that important saves are backed up through the game’s supported method, and make sure you can reinstall the affected games. Follow Epic’s official Launcher reinstallation procedure.

Common Epic log patterns and the next check

Log pattern Most useful next check What it does—and does not—prove
Missing file or directory; LS-0014 Verify the game files, then reinstall the game if verification fails Strongly points to an incomplete, changed, or inaccessible game installation; it does not by itself prove drive failure
Access denied or permission-related entries Test Run as administrator, then inspect folder permissions and security software Shows that an operation was denied; the responsible permission or security component still needs confirmation
Web-cache, UI, or stale-session symptoms Exit the Launcher and clear the web cache Makes stale temporary data less likely; it does not repair every crash or network outage
EOS, InstallHelper, or MainService failure Collect the relevant EOS logs and check service, network, and permission conditions Routes the investigation to EOS or installation services; the line alone may not identify the root cause
Proxy, certificate, timeout, DNS, or connection failure Check proxy configuration, certificate trust, DNS, clock, firewall, and Epic service status Points to the connection path; it does not establish whether the remote service, local network, or security software is responsible
Unsupported graphics card or graphics initialization failure Confirm requirements and update the GPU driver from the official manufacturer Supports a compatibility or driver investigation; it is not proof that the graphics card has physically failed
Unreal Fatal or repeated Error entries Inspect the first fatal/error line and its category and context in Saved/Logs Identifies serious runtime or project logging events; assigning the root cause requires the actual project log and reproduction details

When to contact Epic Support

Escalate when the problem survives the supported local checks, appears across multiple games, continues after a clean reproduction, or involves an EOS service-level failure that you cannot interpret safely. A reproducible crash signature in the log is also a good reason to stop experimenting and ask for help.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reproduce the issue immediately before collecting the files. Send the newest relevant Launcher log and, for installation, update, verification, uninstall, or EOS-availability problems, the additional EOS logs Epic requests. Include the error code, exact reproduction time, operating system, Launcher version if visible, affected game or project, and the steps that trigger the failure. Remove passwords, authentication tokens, account identifiers, private project paths, and other sensitive information before sharing logs.

Do not upload a random collection of old logs and expect support to infer the incident. Do not replace DLLs from unofficial websites, use registry cleaners, install third-party driver tools as a first-line repair, or claim that a single log proves hardware failure, malware, or an Epic outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every Warning in an Epic Games log an error?

No. A warning may be harmless or may describe a condition that existed before the actual failure. Start around the reproduction timestamp and look for the first meaningful Fatal, Error, Failed, access, timeout, certificate, missing-file, or network entry, then read the surrounding context.

Should I verify game files or clear the Epic Games Launcher cache?

For a game-specific launch problem, open Epic Games Launcher, go to Library, select the game’s three-dot menu, choose Manage, and select Verify. Verification repairs files that differ from the expected installation without affecting saved data. For Launcher or EOS problems, collect the appropriate service logs instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will clearing the Epic Games Launcher web cache fix logging errors?

It may help when the Launcher is using stale temporary interface or session data, but it is not a universal crash fix. Clearing the web cache does not repair a damaged game installation, an Unreal project, a graphics-driver problem, or an Epic service outage.

Which logs should I send to Epic Support for an EOS or installation error?

On Windows, collect the four newest Launcher logs and the relevant InstallHelper and MainService logs. For an Epic Online Service Unavailable message, Epic may also request Bootstrapper, EOSInstaller, EpicOnlineServicesHost, and the system-wide EOS log location. Reproduce the error immediately before collecting them.

The Bottom Line

Start with scope and evidence: determine whether the Launcher, EOS, a game, or Unreal Engine is producing the error; reproduce it; collect the matching log; and investigate the first meaningful failure. Then check service status, updates, cache, permissions, game-file verification, background software, official graphics drivers, and network conditions in that order. Reinstall only after backing up important information and understanding that Launcher removal also removes installed games.
