The reliable way to stream a Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED on Discord is Switch dock → HDMI capture card → USB computer connection → OBS Studio → Discord. You need a compatible docked Switch, an external capture card, OBS, and the Discord desktop app. The Switch Lite is not compatible with this standard setup because it does not support TV Mode.
The setup you need
To stream a regular Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED on Discord, use this signal path:

Switch dock → HDMI cable → USB capture card → computer running OBS Studio → Discord screen share.
The capture card is the essential bridge: it receives the dock’s HDMI output and presents the Switch video to OBS as a video source. Discord then shares the OBS image with people in your voice channel or call.

This standard method does not work with a Nintendo Switch Lite. The Lite does not support TV Mode or output video through a dock. Nintendo’s Switch Lite support information confirms the limitation.
What you need
- A regular Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED.
- The compatible Switch dock and its AC adapter.
- An external USB capture card for Nintendo Switch with HDMI input and USB output.
- A computer that can run OBS Studio and Discord.
- An HDMI cable from the dock to the capture card.
- A second HDMI cable if you want to use the capture card’s passthrough output with a TV or monitor.
- Optional: a microphone, webcam, headphones, and a second monitor.
Choose a capture card with an HDMI input and a USB connection to the computer. Do not confuse a capture card with a dock: the dock provides the Switch’s TV-Mode HDMI output, while the capture card transfers that output into OBS. OBS describes capture cards as the normal way to bring console gameplay into the application in its console-capture FAQ.
Many capture-card packages include at least one HDMI cable, so check the box contents before buying a replacement. If you are using HDMI passthrough and do not already have a spare, you may need a second HDMI cable for capture card connection between the card and your TV or monitor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA replacement or spare Nintendo Switch dock is relevant only if you have a compatible regular Switch or Switch OLED and do not have a working dock. A dock by itself cannot capture video to a computer, and it cannot add TV output to a Switch Lite.
Connect the Switch and capture card
- Place the Switch in its dock.
- Connect the dock’s AC adapter and make sure the dock is powered.
- Connect the dock’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- For low-latency gameplay, connect the capture card’s HDMI output to a TV or monitor.
- Connect the capture card to the computer with its USB cable. Use a USB 3.x port when the capture card requires USB 3.x.
- Start the Switch and open OBS Studio on the computer.
The HDMI input carries the console image into the capture card. The HDMI output is passthrough to a TV or monitor, while USB carries the captured video to the computer. This input/output arrangement is also described in Elgato’s capture-card setup documentation, including its Nintendo Switch setup.
Add the Switch to OBS Studio
- Open OBS Studio.
- Create a new scene, or select an existing scene.
- In the Sources box, click the + button.
- Select Video Capture Device.
- Create a source and select your capture card in the Device menu.
- Choose a resolution and frame rate supported by the card.
- Click OK and confirm that the Switch appears in the OBS preview.
OBS identifies Video Capture Device as the source type for webcams, capture cards, and similar video hardware. On Windows, the device generally needs to provide DirectShow output. See OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide if the card does not appear.
For a standard Switch workflow, 1080p at 60 fps is a reasonable OBS target when both the capture card and computer support it. That does not guarantee that Discord viewers will receive 1080p60: OBS settings, the capture card, the computer, Discord’s client, and the account’s stream-quality limits are separate constraints.

Look at the OBS Audio Mixer while a game is running. If the capture-card audio meter moves, OBS is receiving game sound. If necessary, open the source’s audio properties or OBS’s Advanced Audio Properties to control whether the source is monitored, sent to the output, or muted. OBS explains these monitoring choices in its Quick Start Guide.

Before streaming, use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard if you are unsure which settings your computer can handle. A short recording or private test call is a better test than relying only on the preview.
Share the Switch on Discord
The simplest approach is to share an OBS projector window. This lets OBS combine the Switch image with a webcam, microphone layout, alerts, or other scene elements before Discord sends it to viewers.
- Join a Discord voice channel or start a direct call.
- In OBS, right-click the preview.
- Select Windowed Projector (Preview), or use a fullscreen projector on a separate display.
- Return to Discord and click Screen or Share Screen.
- Select the OBS projector window, or select the monitor showing the projector.
- Choose the available stream quality and frame rate.
- Click Go Live or start the stream.
Discord’s official Go Live and Screen Share instructions support sharing an individual application window or an entire display. Sharing only the projector window is preferable to sharing the entire desktop because private notifications and unrelated applications remain hidden.
Ask someone in the call to verify the picture and game audio before beginning a longer session. Discord’s documented limits can change; the current support information states that users can stream up to 720p/30 fps, while Nitro and Nitro Classic subscribers can stream up to 4K/60 fps. Browser streaming may expose different controls from the desktop app, so check the quality menu you actually see.
Alternative: use OBS Virtual Camera
OBS can send its composed scene as a virtual camera input. To use it:
- In OBS, click Start Virtual Camera.
- In Discord, open the camera or video settings.
- Select OBS Virtual Camera as the camera.
- Start video in the call, or use the camera input where appropriate.
OBS explicitly lists Discord among the applications that can use its virtual camera in the Virtual Camera guide. This method is useful when Discord should receive the complete OBS scene as a camera feed, but it is not automatically a complete audio solution. A virtual camera is primarily a video route.
For most people streaming a game to a Discord voice channel, the projector-window method is easier because Discord’s screen sharing can carry the selected application’s audio on supported clients. If you use the virtual-camera route, configure audio separately and test it carefully.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Get game audio and microphone audio to viewers
There are two audio jobs:
- Game audio: the capture card must receive audio from the Switch over HDMI, and Discord must receive the OBS or application audio.
- Voice audio: Discord should use your microphone directly, or you can deliberately build a combined OBS audio mix.
Do not send the same game audio through multiple routes. For example, capturing it in OBS, monitoring it into your headphones, and also sharing duplicate desktop audio in Discord can produce an echo.

If you use headphones on the Switch
Be careful with the Switch’s headphone jack. Elgato’s Switch capture setup warns that plugging headphones into the Switch can stop game audio from being sent over HDMI. That can leave OBS with video but no game sound.
Possible solutions include:
- Connect headphones to the TV or monitor’s headphone output.
- Monitor the capture-card audio in OBS, accepting that software monitoring may introduce delay.
- Use a compatible Chat Link-style audio cable if your headset and capture-card setup require one.
The correct cable and routing depend on the exact headset, capture card, and microphone arrangement. A cable intended for a different console or headset wiring standard may not solve the problem.
Prevent an echo
If viewers hear the game twice, inspect both OBS and Discord:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- In OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties for the capture-card source.
- Choose the appropriate monitoring mode rather than automatically monitoring everything.
- In Discord, check that you are not also sharing duplicate desktop audio.
- Mute one duplicate route and test again.
Elgato’s documentation specifically recommends adjusting the capture-card source’s monitoring behavior when an echo occurs. OBS’s video-call streaming tutorial also describes routing OBS audio through a virtual audio device, but warns that this requires careful monitoring to avoid echoes and duplicated sound.
Play through passthrough, not the OBS preview
Use the TV or monitor connected to the capture card’s HDMI output for gameplay whenever possible. HDMI passthrough is intended to provide a real-time display, while playing from the OBS preview or software-monitored audio can add noticeable latency.
The computer screen can still show OBS and Discord. The passthrough display is for playing; OBS is for composition and checking the signal.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
No video in OBS
- Confirm that the Switch is a regular model or OLED model, not a Switch Lite.
- Make sure the Switch is seated in a powered dock and is displaying on a TV when tested directly.
- Check the HDMI direction: dock HDMI output must go to capture-card HDMI input.
- Confirm that the capture card is selected under Sources → Video Capture Device.
- Try a resolution and frame rate supported by both the Switch signal and the capture card.
- Connect the card directly to a suitable USB 3.x port instead of an unreliable hub.
- Test the HDMI cable, dock, and TV separately to identify which part of the chain has failed.
OBS shows video but no game audio
- Check whether the OBS Audio Mixer meter moves.
- Remove headphones from the Switch’s headphone jack if HDMI audio is required.
- Check the capture card’s audio mode and source properties.
- Confirm the source is not muted in OBS.
- Disable duplicate desktop-audio capture while testing.
Viewers see video but hear nothing
- Confirm that Discord is sharing the OBS projector or the intended application, not an unrelated window.
- Check whether the Discord client supports application-audio capture.
- Use the Discord desktop app where possible and test its current share-audio controls.
- Remember that Discord states application audio capture is available on Windows desktop, macOS desktop, Chrome, and mobile clients, but not Linux.
- If using OBS Virtual Camera, configure a separate audio route; the virtual camera alone does not guarantee game audio.
There is an echo
Mute duplicate desktop audio, or change the OBS capture-card source’s monitoring mode. An echo usually means the same game sound is reaching Discord through two paths—for example, OBS monitoring and Discord desktop audio.
The stream is delayed
Play from the TV or monitor connected to HDMI passthrough instead of the OBS preview. Also avoid using software monitoring for your primary gameplay audio if the delay is distracting.

The image is black
First test the Switch directly with the TV and verify every HDMI connection. Some capture devices cannot capture HDCP-protected signals; for example, Elgato states that HDCP-protected signals cannot be used by the HD60 X. Ordinary Switch gameplay is listed as a supported source for that product, but a black image still requires checking the actual hardware, cable path, and signal.
Discord quality is worse than OBS quality
That is expected when Discord imposes a lower limit than OBS or the capture card. Inspect Discord’s stream-quality controls and distinguish between:
- the signal the capture card can receive;
- the resolution and frame rate OBS processes; and
- the resolution and frame rate Discord delivers to viewers.
These are separate stages. A capture card capable of 1080p60 does not mean every Discord viewer receives 1080p60.
Switch Lite: what your options are
The normal dock-and-capture-card workflow is unavailable for Switch Lite because the console has no supported TV Mode video output. Buying a dock, HDMI cable, or ordinary USB capture card does not change that limitation.
The remaining possibilities—an unofficial internal hardware modification or pointing a camera at the Lite’s screen—are outside the normal setup and do not provide the quality, reliability, or simplicity of HDMI capture. For this guide, treat Switch Lite as incompatible with the standard method.
Privacy and Discord updates
Before streaming, close or hide private applications and notifications. Sharing an OBS projector window rather than the whole desktop reduces accidental exposure.
Discord announced that audio and video conversations, including Go Live streams, require end-to-end encryption beginning March 2, 2026, and that the latest Discord app is required to support the requirement. If a call or stream behaves differently after the change, update Discord before troubleshooting further. Refer to Discord’s end-to-end encryption announcement for the current requirements.

The best setup for most players
Use a docked regular Switch or Switch OLED, an external USB capture card, OBS Studio, and the Discord desktop app. Connect the dock to the card, add the card as an OBS Video Capture Device, verify the Audio Mixer, open an OBS projector, and share that projector in Discord.

Keep gameplay on HDMI passthrough, test audio before going live, and do not promise yourself or viewers a particular Discord resolution, zero-latency experience, or audio configuration until your own hardware and client have been tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you stream a Nintendo Switch Lite on Discord with a capture card?
No. The Nintendo Switch Lite does not support TV Mode and has no supported HDMI video output. A dock and ordinary capture card cannot capture its screen. An unofficial hardware modification or a camera pointed at the screen would be a separate workaround, not the standard setup.
Do I need OBS to stream a Nintendo Switch on Discord?
Yes. Put the regular Switch or Switch OLED in its powered dock, connect the dock’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input, connect the card to the computer over USB, add it in OBS as a Video Capture Device, and share an OBS projector window in Discord.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How do I avoid delay when streaming Switch gameplay to Discord?
Use the capture card’s HDMI passthrough output connected to a TV or monitor for gameplay. Playing through the OBS preview can introduce more delay than real-time passthrough.
Why is my Switch game audio missing in OBS?
Plugging headphones into the Switch’s headphone jack can stop game audio from being sent over HDMI. Try the TV or monitor headphone output, OBS monitoring, or a compatible Chat Link-style audio cable, depending on your headset and capture card.
What quality can Discord stream from OBS?
Discord’s limits are separate from OBS and the capture card. The official support information states that standard users can stream up to 720p/30 fps, while Nitro and Nitro Classic subscribers can stream up to 4K/60 fps; available controls can vary by client and may change.
The Bottom Line
In short: a regular Switch or Switch OLED can be streamed to Discord through its dock, a USB capture card, OBS Studio, and Discord screen sharing. The Switch Lite cannot use this standard HDMI method. Use HDMI passthrough for playing, OBS for composing the image and checking audio, and Discord for the final stream.
