Epic Games said on May 16, 2025, that Apple had blocked a Fortnite submission, preventing the game from returning to the U.S. App Store and from launching through the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union. Apple disputed that characterization, saying it had asked Epic Sweden to resubmit the update without the U.S. storefront.
The dispute was temporary in the United States: Fortnite returned to the U.S. App Store on May 20, 2025. The May 16 statement therefore described a disputed review standoff—not a permanent worldwide ban.

What Epic said Apple blocked
Epic’s complaint concerned a specific Fortnite submission and its planned release channels. Epic said Apple’s action prevented it from:
- Releasing Fortnite through the U.S. App Store.
- Launching Fortnite through the Epic Games Store for iOS in the EU.
- Keeping the iOS version aligned with the game’s synchronized content updates.
Epic said the blocked submission left Fortnite “offline worldwide” on iOS until Apple unblocked it. That was Epic’s description of the practical effect, not an independently established finding that Apple had removed Fortnite from every iPhone or permanently banned Epic.

The timeline behind the dispute
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 9, 2025 | Epic resubmitted Fortnite to the U.S. App Store. |
| About a week later | Epic withdrew that submission after Apple had not accepted it. Tim Sweeney said Fortnite needed synchronized weekly updates across platforms. |
| May 14, 2025 | Epic submitted another Fortnite version containing updated content. |
| May 16, 2025 | Epic said Apple had blocked the latest submission and that the U.S. and EU releases could not proceed. |
| May 19, 2025 | Contemporaneous coverage said a judge pressured Apple to approve Fortnite or return to court. |
| May 20, 2025 | Fortnite returned to the U.S. App Store after a five-year absence. |
The later U.S. return is recorded in TechCrunch’s Fortnite coverage.
Apple’s account was different
Apple disputed Epic’s description of the event. Apple said it had asked Epic Sweden to resubmit the update without the U.S. App Store storefront. According to Apple, that request was intended to avoid affecting Fortnite in other regions.

Apple also said it had not removed the live Fortnite version from alternative distribution marketplaces in the European Economic Community. This response addressed a different question from Epic’s complaint: Apple denied removing an existing alternative-marketplace version, while Epic focused on its inability to submit and launch the planned update through its intended channels.
That distinction matters. “Apple blocked Fortnite” was Epic’s interpretation of the outcome. Apple described the matter as a request to change and resubmit the app. The available contemporaneous reporting did not establish, without qualification, whether the later submission was formally rejected, delayed in review, or held pending changes.
Why the U.S. and EU situations were not the same
The United States: a return to Apple’s App Store
Epic’s U.S. effort followed litigation over Apple’s App Store rules, including the handling of external payment links and Apple’s commission practices. Epic viewed the legal ruling as strengthening its case for Fortnite’s reinstatement.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

However, the ruling changed the legal backdrop; it did not automatically prove that Apple had been ordered to approve every Fortnite submission immediately. Contemporaneous coverage distinguished the court’s requirements concerning payment links from Epic’s separate request to have the game restored.
The precise scope of the injunction remained contested. Readers should not summarize the event as “a court ordered Apple to approve Fortnite” unless referring directly to the relevant judgment.

In the EU, Epic was not simply asking Apple to put Fortnite back in Apple’s ordinary App Store. Its statement also concerned distribution through the Epic Games Store for iOS, an alternative marketplace made possible by the EU’s Digital Markets Act framework.

These are separate channels:
- Apple’s App Store: Apple’s first-party iPhone and iPad marketplace.
- Alternative marketplaces: third-party app stores permitted under EU rules, subject to Apple’s applicable installation, notarization, security and distribution processes.
- Epic Games Store for iOS: Epic’s own alternative distribution channel in the EU.
As a result, “Fortnite was blocked from the EU App Store” is incomplete wording for the May 16 dispute. Epic was also talking about whether it could launch or update Fortnite through its own EU marketplace. Apple, meanwhile, said it had not removed the live version from alternative marketplaces in the European Community.

Fortnite receives frequent synchronized content updates. Epic said that if the iOS build could not be released, it could not keep the iOS version aligned with the current versions on other platforms.
That explains Epic’s worldwide-offline statement, but it does not mean Apple directly disabled Fortnite in every country. The distinction is between a global operational consequence of a missing update and a direct regional ban imposed by Apple.

The sourced reports do not independently verify every device-level consequence for players who already had Fortnite installed. Whether an existing installation continued working, whether it could receive updates, and how individual EU marketplace installations behaved depended on the app build, device, region and distribution channel.
What it meant for players
- U.S. players seeking a new download: Fortnite was unavailable through the U.S. App Store during the May 16 standoff, then returned on May 20, 2025.
- Existing installations: The available reports support Epic’s claim about the iOS update problem, but do not establish one universal result for every installed copy.
- EU players: The relevant question was not only App Store availability but also access to Epic’s alternative iOS marketplace and its release process.
- Players elsewhere: Epic said the update issue affected iOS worldwide, but that should not be confused with Apple removing Fortnite from every regional storefront.
- Other platforms: Console, PC and supported Android versions were separate ways to play, while browser or cloud-gaming options depended on region, device, account and network support.
What happened to the alleged ban?
It did not become a permanent U.S. exclusion. After judicial pressure was reported on May 19, Fortnite returned to the U.S. App Store on May 20, 2025.
The episode nevertheless highlighted the unresolved issues at the center of the Epic–Apple dispute: how much control Apple should retain over app distribution, how external payments should work, how much discretion Apple has during app review, and whether alternative marketplaces offer developers a meaningful route around the App Store.
The most accurate summary is therefore:
Epic said Apple blocked a particular Fortnite submission on May 16, 2025. Apple disputed that account and said it requested a modified resubmission. The U.S. standoff ended when Fortnite returned to the App Store on May 20, while the EU issue involved Epic’s alternative iOS marketplace rather than simply a normal App Store listing.
