You do not have to choose one permanently. A practical setup is Steam as your main library and Epic as a second store used when its price, free-game program or catalog is the better fit.

Steam wins as the general-purpose choice because purchase support and save continuity matter every time you use a game. Epic wins when a specific game, promotion or free claim outweighs the value of keeping everything in one place.
Catalogs, exclusives and where games launch
Steam’s advantage: a mature, unified library
Steam’s catalog and client have had years to develop around a single library. Installed games, updates, playtime, controller settings, community pages and workshop content are presented in one established workflow. That consistency is especially useful if you regularly move between a desktop, laptop or supported handheld device.

Steam is not automatically the correct store for every release. A publisher may launch on another storefront first, keep a title exclusive for a period, or sell downloadable content through only one account ecosystem. Check the store listing before buying if you need a particular edition, mod support or multiplayer account connection.
Epic’s advantage: releases that are not on Steam
The Epic Games Store remains necessary for games that are Epic-exclusive, timed exclusives or simply sold there at launch. If a title is available only through Epic, no feature comparison changes the answer: you need an Epic account and the Epic launcher for the PC version.
Epic reported more than 6,000 games in its 2025 store metrics. That is a substantial catalog, but the number alone does not tell you whether a particular game has the reviews, guides, workshop files or long-established community that you expect. Search both stores for the exact edition and check whether multiplayer, achievements and downloadable content are tied to a publisher account.

How to avoid buying the wrong PC edition
- Search for the exact game and edition on both stores.
- Confirm the operating system and minimum requirements shown on the store page.
- Check whether the game uses a separate publisher account or another launcher after purchase.
- Read the save-system notes. A game can support cloud saves on one storefront and local-only saves on another.
- Verify that the downloadable content you want is sold for the same storefront edition.
Price, coupons, rewards and free games
Compare the checkout total, not the headline discount
Both stores run seasonal sales and publisher promotions. The meaningful comparison is the final regional checkout price after taxes, coupons, account rewards and any edition-specific discount. Prices can differ by country, currency and payment method, so a sale percentage shown on one store is not a reliable predictor of the other store’s total.
Epic emphasizes regional pricing and payment support, and its store promotions can include coupons or Epic Rewards. The value and eligibility of those offers change over time; open the checkout screen and confirm the amount before you commit. Do not assume that a coupon applies to every publisher, edition or pre-order.
Epic’s weekly free-game program
Epic’s strongest consumer incentive is its free-game program. Epic says that a game you claim remains in your library, so you can download it later rather than having to play it during the giveaway period. You still need an Epic account and must complete the claim while the offer is active.
Epic’s 2025 Year in Review, published in 2026, reported 662 million free titles claimed through the program. That figure counts claims, not unique people or hours played. The sensible strategy is to claim anything you may want later, then decide when—and whether—to install it.

What Epic’s store numbers mean
Epic reported these figures for 2025:
- 78 million monthly active PC users, an all-time record according to Epic.
- More than 317 million total PC players.
- More than 6,000 games in the PC store.
- $1.16 billion in PC spending.
- 662 million titles claimed through the Free Games Program.
- 2.78 billion hours spent in third-party games.
These are Epic’s own store metrics, published in 2026. “Monthly active users” and “total PC players” are different measures, and neither figure guarantees that a particular game has a larger active community than its Steam version.
When Steam is cheaper in practice
Steam can be the better value even when Epic’s sticker price is lower. A game bought on Steam may justify a small price difference if you rely on Steam Cloud, Workshop content, family features or a single consolidated library. Conversely, an Epic coupon or reward can make Epic the rational choice for a game you will play locally and do not need to mod or move between computers.
Cloud saves and playing on more than one computer
How Steam Cloud works
Steam describes Steam Cloud as an easy, transparent remote file-storage system for a game. For a title that has implemented it correctly, the client uploads supported save files and downloads them when you sign in on another computer. This is the clearest cross-device continuity option in the comparison.
Steam Cloud is configured per game, not guaranteed for every title. A game may omit cloud support, synchronize only some files, or mishandle conflicts. Before changing computers, launch the game on your original machine, let synchronization finish, and check the cloud status in the Steam client. If Steam reports a conflict, stop and compare the timestamps rather than choosing a file at random.
Epic saves are title-dependent
Do not assume that buying the same game on Epic and Steam creates a shared save. Cloud-save support, file locations and cross-store transfer are determined by the game’s implementation and its publisher account. A save created in one storefront may remain local, may synchronize only within that storefront, or may require a manual export.
If moving a save matters, look for an explicit cloud-save or cross-progression statement on the game’s support page. Back up the local save folder before installing a second copy, and avoid running both versions at the same time until you know which files they use.
A safe move to a new PC
- On the old PC, close the game normally and wait for the launcher to finish synchronization.
- Make a separate backup of the game’s local save folder.
- Install the same storefront version on the new PC and sign in to the same account.
- Allow the launcher to download cloud data before starting the game.
- Open the game, verify the newest save, and only then remove the old installation.
Refunds and purchase risk
Steam’s published standard
Valve’s Steam Refunds policy says you can request a refund for nearly any purchase for any reason. The standard rule for games is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours played. Once approved, refunds are generally issued within a week.

The two-hour limit measures playtime recorded by Steam, so testing a game for several long sessions can remove the straightforward eligibility path. Submit the request through Steam Support and explain unusual circumstances if the standard window does not fit; approval outside the rule is discretionary, not guaranteed.

What to check on Epic
Epic’s refund conditions can depend on the product, region and account status. Read the current terms shown in Epic support before buying, especially for pre-orders, downloadable content and purchases made through a third-party payment flow. Because the supplied Epic information does not establish a single universal time-and-play rule, do not assume Epic and Steam use identical limits.
If easy experimentation is important to you, Steam’s clearly documented standard gives it the lower purchase-risk profile.
Family sharing and account access
Steam family and library tools
Steam provides account-level family and library-sharing options in its client. Availability and restrictions can vary by game, account relationship and the current Steam Families rules. Sharing does not turn one purchase into unlimited simultaneous copies, and some titles or downloadable content are excluded.
Epic does not provide account-to-account library sharing
Epic states that it does not offer account-to-account library sharing or a family-sharing feature. Each person who wants to play an Epic purchase should use the account that owns it. Never share a password to imitate a family library; it creates account-security and ownership problems and can interfere with support.

Social features, mods and community support
Steam’s established community layer
Steam’s mature community system combines reviews, discussion hubs, guides, screenshots, achievements and, for supported games, Workshop mod distribution. Controller configuration and handheld-oriented features are also part of Steam’s strongest player case. These tools are valuable after the sale, not just at checkout: they help you troubleshoot, discover mods and keep settings with a game.

Support remains game-specific. A title may have no Workshop integration, limited controller support or a community that is more active elsewhere. Treat the presence of a Steam page as a starting point, not a guarantee of every feature.
Epic’s client and announced work
Epic’s 2025 review described work on community spaces, profiles, private messaging, voice chat and game-independent parties. It also described a Fortnite-linked marketing program and a planned cross-platform library and regional-storefront workstream for 2026. Those items were announced plans, not delivered features at the time of the review. Do not buy a game expecting a roadmap item to be available today.
Epic can still be the better social choice when your friends or a specific game already use Epic accounts. Check the game’s multiplayer requirements rather than assuming that friends on one launcher can join friends on the other.
Operating systems, devices and launcher friction
Launcher support is separate from game support. A client may install on your computer while an individual game requires a different operating system, graphics API, controller configuration or anti-cheat component. Read the game’s current requirements, especially before buying for a secondary computer or handheld.
Steam’s long-established controller and handheld integration makes it the smoother option for players who frequently leave the keyboard-and-mouse desktop. Epic is a sensible companion launcher when a particular game or free claim is worth handling separately. In either case, keep enough storage for the launcher, the game and shader or cache data, and allow updates before a planned trip or offline session.

These terms can influence where an independent game launches, how a publisher prices a release and whether a title appears as an Epic exclusive. They do not tell you which store has the better user experience, but they explain why storefront availability differs.

Do not infer Steam’s commission from old comparisons
Steam’s exact current commission should not be assumed from older articles or internet tables. Different agreements and revenue tiers may apply, and no single current percentage is established here. For players, the practical result is simply that developer economics can affect launch timing and exclusivity.
Should you buy a game on Steam or Epic?
Choose Steam when these conditions apply
- You want one primary library with mature community and controller tools.
- You will play on more than one computer and the game supports Steam Cloud.
- You value a clearly documented refund process.
- You use Workshop mods, guides or community troubleshooting.
- Your family needs Steam’s sharing features.
- The Steam price is close enough that convenience outweighs a temporary Epic promotion.
Choose Epic when these conditions apply
- The game is Epic-exclusive or launches there first.
- Epic’s final regional price, coupon or reward is materially lower.
- You are claiming a weekly free game and do not need cross-store saves.
- Your friends and the game’s multiplayer account system already use Epic.
- You want to support a release under Epic’s developer-friendly revenue terms.
Use both without creating a mess
- Pick Steam as the default location for games that support Steam Cloud, Workshop or family features.
- Keep Epic installed for free claims, exclusives and deals.
- Record which storefront owns each game and its downloadable content.
- Back up saves before installing a second storefront version.
- Use the same publisher account where the game supports cross-progression, but do not assume ownership transfers between stores.
- Check each launcher for pending updates before starting a game after a long break.
Common problems and fixes
“My save is missing on the new computer.”
Confirm that you signed in to the same launcher account, that the game actually supports cloud saves, and that synchronization completed on the old computer. Restore the backup you made before installation if the cloud copy is older. Do not overwrite a newer local save until you have compared file dates.
“I bought the wrong edition or storefront version.”
Stop downloading extra content and check the store’s refund eligibility immediately. DLC and saves can be tied to the original storefront, and buying the base game again elsewhere may not unlock content you already own.

Verify that the claim completed while the promotion was active and that you are signed in to the account that made the claim. A claimed title remains in that account’s library; it is not transferable to another account.
“Friends cannot see or join my game.”
Check whether the game requires a separate publisher account, supports cross-play and uses the same storefront version. Launcher friends lists are not automatically shared across every game.
“A promised launcher feature is unavailable.”
Distinguish a shipped feature from an announced roadmap item. Epic’s community, cross-platform library and regional-storefront work described for 2026 should be treated as planned until the relevant client release confirms availability.
Bottom line
Make Steam your primary PC game library unless a specific reason points elsewhere. Its documented cloud-save model, predictable refund rule and mature community tooling lower the ongoing cost of owning and moving games. Keep an Epic Games Store account for weekly free titles, Epic-only releases and deals that beat Steam’s total price. Using both gives you access to the widest practical catalog without pretending that saves, DLC or family sharing automatically cross the boundary.
