Short answer: Nintendo has scheduled a ground-up The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026. The store listing promises enhanced controls with jumping, dashing and modern camera movement, plus HDR, VRR output and linear PCM surround sound. Nintendo has not yet published the complete button layout, save-slot details, automatic-save rules, frame-rate target or input-lag measurements, so those points remain unconfirmed before launch.
There is also a separate Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics version. That edition is the one Nintendo explicitly pairs with its official wireless Nintendo 64 Controller for Switch 2. Keeping the remake and the classic-library release separate prevents most control, save and performance confusion.

What is actually coming to Switch 2?
The November 5, 2026 Switch 2 remake
Nintendo’s official store listing describes Ocarina of Time as built from the ground up for Nintendo Switch 2. It is listed as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive with a November 5, 2026 release date and a digital edition. Because the authoritative listing was available before launch, every detail in this section is an announcement rather than a hands-on test.
Nintendo’s wording is unusually specific about the redesign: “Now Link must become the Hero of Time and save the kingdom in this classic tale, built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch™ 2 system.” The listing also calls out enhanced controls, jump and dash actions, modern camera movements, HDR output, VRR output on compatible televisions and linear PCM surround sound.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics release
The classic-library version is a separate way to play the original Nintendo 64 game. Nintendo’s support information says the official Nintendo 64 Controller is designed for Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics, pairs wirelessly with Switch 2 and is intended to reproduce the original N64 feel. That statement applies to the Classics software, not automatically to the new remake.
How do the remake’s controls work?
Jump and dash are confirmed features
The remake listing explicitly advertises the ability to jump and dash. Those actions indicate a control model updated for Switch 2 rather than a strict recreation of the N64 input scheme. Nintendo also advertises modern camera movements, so camera operation should be treated as part of the remake’s redesign rather than assumed to match the original right-stick-free layout.
These are feature descriptions, not a complete manual. Nintendo has not said which buttons perform jump, dash, item use, sword attacks, shield actions, or camera control. It has also not published a button diagram, accessibility mapping, or a statement that every action can be remapped. Do not rely on an online “confirmed” layout until Nintendo releases one.

For the remake, Nintendo has not identified an N64 controller layout as the preferred or supported control mode. The safest expectation is that the game will be presented around its announced modern controls, but the exact supported controller list and any alternate mappings should be checked in the final software documentation.

If you want the original N64 feel, the official Nintendo 64 Controller is the clearly documented choice for Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics. That recommendation is strongest for the classic version because Nintendo specifically describes wireless Switch 2 pairing and Nintendo Classics use. It is not evidence that the same controller will provide a dedicated N64 mode in the remake.
How do saves and cloud backup work?
Local saves are not fully specified
Nintendo’s pre-release store information does not state the remake’s automatic-save cadence, number of local save slots, manual-save menu structure or whether its save implementation differs from the Nintendo Classics emulator. Treat all of those details as “not yet announced.” The absence of a published schedule does not prove that the game lacks autosaves; it means Nintendo has not documented the behavior in the material currently available.
Save Data Cloud requires Nintendo Switch Online
A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for Save Data Cloud backup. This requirement is separate from having a local save on the console: without the membership, the cloud-backup feature is unavailable, even though Nintendo’s listing does not say that local progress requires an online subscription.

It also warns that Nintendo cannot guarantee cloud data will be retained after an extended period without membership. That qualification matters if you let a subscription lapse: cloud storage should not be treated as a permanent archive that Nintendo promises to preserve indefinitely.

A sensible pre-launch backup routine
- Confirm that the Nintendo Account used on the console has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership if you want cloud backup.
- After the game is installed, open its software options and check whether the title exposes a Save Data Cloud setting or a manual backup command.
- Before moving to another Switch 2, verify that the latest save has completed its cloud upload rather than assuming the process is instantaneous.
- Keep the original console powered on until the new console confirms that the save has downloaded successfully.
The exact menu labels and timing for these steps can change with the final release. Nintendo has not yet published a remake-specific save manual.
What performance and display features are confirmed?
Advertised output features
The official listing confirms three output capabilities:
- HDR output: supported when used with compatible equipment and settings.
- VRR output: available on compatible televisions. The listing does not define a target refresh range or describe behavior on every display.
- Linear PCM surround sound: supported for systems that can receive and reproduce that audio format.
These are advertised specifications, not measurements of image quality or responsiveness. A television must support the relevant HDR or VRR standard, and your console, cable and audio chain must be configured to pass the signal. The listing does not promise that every screen will activate every feature automatically.

Numbers Nintendo has not published
No official frame-rate target, resolution mode, input-lag measurement or battery-life figure appears in the retrieved listing. It would therefore be inaccurate to call the remake “60 frames per second,” assign a particular pixel count, or claim that it feels lag-free. Those claims require a dated technical statement or an independent test of the finished software.

The same caution applies to handheld play, loading times, performance during effects-heavy scenes and the effect of HDR or VRR on power use. None of those results is established by the current announcement.
How general Switch 2 compatibility fits in
Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance says compatible Switch software can run on Switch 2, while some games receive updates or upgrades that improve performance. Compatibility and enhancements are title-specific. That general policy should not be used to infer how the new Ocarina of Time remake will perform, nor should it be used to assume that the Nintendo Classics version receives the remake’s rendering features.

Which version should you choose?
Choose the remake if modern movement is the priority
The remake is the relevant option if you want Nintendo’s newly advertised jump and dash actions, updated camera movement and the listed HDR, VRR and surround-sound output. Its release is still in the future, and the missing button map and performance measurements mean you should wait for final documentation if exact controls or latency are decisive.
Choose Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics for the original input feel
The Classics route is the documented choice for reproducing the N64 experience, especially if you already prefer the three-pronged Nintendo 64 Controller. It should not be described as the remake in miniature: Nintendo presents it as the classic-library version, with no announcement that it gains the remake’s jump, dash or modern-camera systems.

Do not assume saves transfer between them
Nintendo has not announced save-data transfer between the remake and the Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics release. Even if both are installed on one Switch 2, treat their progress as separate until Nintendo publishes a transfer procedure.
Pre-release checklist for buyers
- Check that your local Nintendo eShop lists the November 5, 2026 release date and the digital edition for your region.
- Decide whether you want modern movement or the original N64 control feel before buying an additional controller.
- If HDR or VRR matters, confirm that your television supports those features and that your HDMI and audio setup can carry them.
- Keep a Nintendo Switch Online membership active if cloud backup is important to you.
- Wait for the final button map and save documentation if you need remapping, a particular control layout or a known number of save slots.
What remains to be verified after launch?
Once Nintendo publishes final documentation or independent testing becomes possible, the most useful confirmations will be the complete button chart, controller compatibility beyond the announced Classics pairing, remapping options, automatic-save timing, local save-slot count, cross-version transfer support, resolution and frame-rate modes, input latency, loading behavior and handheld-versus-TV differences. Until then, the reliable distinction is simple: the remake has announced modern controls and output features, while the Classics version has the explicit N64 Controller guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Switch 2 automatically improve every older Zelda release?
No. Nintendo describes compatibility and performance improvements as title-specific. The existence of a Switch 2 system does not establish that every older release receives the remake’s controls, graphics or output features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWill progress transfer from Nintendo 64–Nintendo Classics to the remake?
Nintendo has not announced a transfer path between the two products. Keep their saves separate unless a future support document provides an explicit migration method.
Can VRR be used on the Switch 2 handheld screen?
The published specification refers to VRR output on compatible televisions. Nintendo has not stated that the built-in handheld display supports VRR, so that behavior is not confirmed.
