What did the cryptic clue say?
Notebookcheck reported that an unnamed Epic Games Store staff member in the r/EpicGamesPC Discord shared two fragments: “we did this in the past” and “the clue has layers.” The report did not name the staff member. The original Discord post is not independently established by the cited coverage, so the wording is best attributed to Notebookcheck’s report rather than treated as a verified statement from a named Epic spokesperson. Notebookcheck’s December 31 report gives the clue and its attribution.
Why were ARK: Survival Ascended and Deathloop being discussed?
They were guesses reported before the scheduled reveal, not leaked or confirmed answers. Notebookcheck framed “we did this in the past” as potentially pointing to a repeat giveaway, while “the clue has layers” left room for interpretation. It mentioned ARK: Survival Ascended and Deathloop among readers’ theories; the eventual reveal of Chivalry II means those suggestions should remain part of the pre-reveal speculation, not be presented as predictions that came true. Notebookcheck’s report also said the reveal was scheduled for 16:00 UTC on December 31.

Epic’s official guide dates the 2025 Holiday Sale from December 11, 2025, through January 8, 2026. The Chivalry II giveaway itself was the final mystery-game offer on December 31, 2025; that claim window has passed.
