Fortnite’s AI Darth Vader began producing profanity and derogatory language within hours of his May 16, 2025 launch in Fortnite: Galactic Battle. Epic said it quickly hotfixed the problem after players shared clips, but the incident showed that the feature’s safeguards had not caught every way players could prompt the character.
What happened when AI Darth Vader launched
On May 16, 2025, StarWars.com announced that players in Fortnite: Galactic Battle could defeat Darth Vader as a boss, recruit him, and talk with him using conversational AI. The official announcement invited players to ask about Star Wars themes or game strategy. It also said Epic and Disney were honored to feature James Earl Jones’s voice and thanked his estate. Jones’s family said he wanted fans of all ages to continue experiencing the voice and hoped the collaboration would reach longtime fans and new generations. StarWars.com’s launch announcement describes the feature and the family’s statement.
Within hours, players posted clips showing prompts eliciting profanity and derogatory language, including a homophobic slur. Insider Gaming quoted Epic saying Vader was responding to a player prompt about “carcinogens” and that it had hotfixed the behavior. Decrypt separately reported Epic’s explanation that a specific variation of an expletive had slipped past its filters and that the hotfix addressed that word. Insider Gaming’s report and Decrypt’s report detail the clips and Epic’s explanations.
What Epic patched—and what the incident revealed
Epic’s explanations point to a moderation miss: its rules and filters were intended to stop swearing, but a particular variation escaped detection. WIRED reported Epic said the hotfix was issued within 30 minutes of the in-game incident it was addressing. That is a report about the response time, not evidence that every possible unsafe output was eliminated. The clips demonstrated that adversarial prompting could produce responses the launch safeguards were designed to prevent.

Decrypt reported that Epic described three layers of safety controls: configurable safety settings in Gemini; system instructions intended to keep Vader within community rules and avoid harming players; and a final review for remaining violations, including hateful or explicit language, self-harm references, and dangerous or illegal activities. WIRED also reported Epic described game-specific instructions, parental controls for AI use, a reporting option like the one available for other voice chat, and a mechanism for Vader to leave a squad after continued attempts to make him violate rules. These were descriptions of intended controls and reported behavior, not an independent audit or a guarantee that every reply would be safe. WIRED’s coverage discusses the response and the additional controls.
What Disney said about age permissions and conversation data
Disney’s launch announcement said players under 13—or under the applicable digital age of consent if higher—needed parental permission to converse with Vader. It also said Epic securely processed voice audio to generate replies and did not store conversation audio or transcripts. Those are company statements about the launch-era feature, not independently verified audit findings. Disney said the feature was developed in close consultation with Jones’s family, Disney, and Lucasfilm. The announcement sets out those age and data-handling claims.

The SAG-AFTRA charge was a separate issue
On May 19, 2025, SAG-AFTRA announced an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board. The union alleged that Fortnite signatory Llama Productions used AI to replace human performers without notice or bargaining. The Associated Press reported the filing as an allegation, not a legal finding. The union also said it supported members’ and estates’ rights to control digital replicas while maintaining a right to bargain over voice uses that replace member work. Its labor complaint concerned notice and bargaining over performers’ work—not the launch-day slurs or Epic’s moderation patch. The sources cited here do not establish the charge’s later outcome. The Associated Press report covers the filing and the union’s allegation; SAG-AFTRA’s statement explains the union’s position.
