In Epic Seven, DPS deals damage, support helps allies through healing or utility, tanks manage incoming pressure, and debuffers hinder enemies. These are combat jobs—not fixed class labels. A hero can fill more than one role, and the best fit depends on the team and the encounter.
What do DPS, support, tank, and debuffer mean?
Epic Seven teams bring four heroes into battle. Each hero’s role is the contribution their skills make to the team, rather than a label determined solely by their class.
- DPS (damage dealer): Primarily reduces enemy health, helping the team defeat targets.
- Support: Enables allies with healing, cleansing, buffs, protection, or effects that influence turn order. “Support” is a functional umbrella, not a class.
- Tank: Absorbs, redirects, or reduces incoming pressure and may protect allies.
- Debuffer: Applies harmful effects that weaken or control enemies, such as Defense Break, Attack down, Bleed, Stun, Provoke, or Silence.
These jobs overlap. A hero may deal damage while surviving longer than a typical damage dealer, or provide protection alongside debuffs. When describing a hero, identify the main way they help the team, then note any important secondary contribution.
How do hero classes relate to roles?
A class suggests a broad identity, but it does not guarantee a particular hero’s job or build. The six classes and their common associations are summarized below; treat them as tendencies, not rules. Hideout Guides’ class overview, marked updated October 2026, provides this broad taxonomy.

For example, “Knight” points toward a defensive identity, but the class name alone does not tell you everything the hero does. Likewise, support is not synonymous with Soul Weaver: healing and cleansing are support functions, but buffs, protection, and turn manipulation can also support a team.
Why do turn order and utility matter?
Combat Readiness determines when heroes take turns, and Speed affects how quickly they reach those turns. Skills can also push allies forward or pull enemies back. That means an opener or turn manipulator can be valuable without being the team’s main source of damage: acting first may help allies set up their turns or disrupt the opponent’s sequence. Buffs and debuffs shape what happens during those turns. Buffs can strengthen or protect allies; examples include Attack up, Defense up, Immunity, Barrier, and Combat Readiness up. Debuffs can reduce enemy effectiveness or control actions; examples include Defense Break, Attack down, Bleed, Stun, Provoke, and Silence. A team’s utility can therefore matter as much as its raw damage when an encounter calls for a particular answer.
Are debuffs guaranteed to land?
No. Debuff success depends on the attacker’s Effectiveness in relation to the target’s Effect Resistance, and it is not guaranteed even when a debuffer is built to apply effects. Hideout Guides’ overview, marked updated October 2026, describes an 85% maximum chance to apply a debuff, leaving at least a 15% chance for the target to resist. How should you choose roles for a team?
Start with what the fight asks you to do, rather than trying to force one hero of every role into every lineup. Epic Seven presents both PvE and competitive play, and their demands vary. The official Smilegate game page describes strategic battles built by combining heroes; the Google Play listing covers PvE and competitive modes, but neither lays down a universal role recipe.
- Can your team finish the target? Make sure it has enough damage for the encounter.
- Can it survive long enough? Consider whether healing, cleansing, protection, or a hero who absorbs or reduces pressure is needed.
- Does the enemy require a specific answer? A buff, debuff, or control effect may address the mechanic more directly than adding another source of damage.
- Does the plan depend on acting first? If so, Speed and Combat Readiness effects may be central to the lineup.
For any hero you are considering, compare its primary contribution, whether its useful effects depend on turn order, the reliability of those effects, and how well they match the specific encounter. Do not assume every hero in a class performs the same job.

How can one hero fill more than one role?
Role labels are useful shorthand, not mutually exclusive boxes. A bruiser combines damage with survivability, while a utility-focused hero may contribute protection, buffs, or debuffs as well as damage. For an overview of the range of effects found across kits, Epic Helper’s community effects database is a reference; it is not an official definition of class roles.
