Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteChoose Escape Academy if you want the most flexible option: it supports solo play, two-player local split-screen, and online co-op. Choose the original We Were Here if you specifically want an online two-player game built around asymmetric information, voice communication, and explaining clues to a partner.
Both are co-op puzzle adventures, but they serve different situations. Escape Academy is the safer pick for a household sharing one screen or for someone who may play alone. We Were Here is the better fit for two people who enjoy deliberately talking through incomplete information and do not mind that each player has a separate role. The comparison below concerns the original We Were Here, not the later We Were Here Too, We Were Here Forever, or the upcoming We Were Here Tomorrow.

Escape Academy vs. We Were Here at a glance
| Decision factor | Escape Academy | We Were Here (original) |
|---|---|---|
| Solo play | Yes. Its official site says the game is playable alone. | The official description presents it as a cooperative adventure for two and does not list a solo mode. |
| Co-op format | Two-player co-op, either locally or online; local play uses split-screen. | Two players are separated into the Librarian and Explorer roles. |
| Information flow | The official pitch centers on escape-room challenges. Local play lets both people share the same physical setup. | Each player has different information. The Explorer moves through the castle while the Librarian is confined to another area, so clues must be described to one another. |
| Communication | Communication can help in co-op, but the game is not defined by a mandatory two-role information split. | Voice communication and precise descriptions are central mechanics, not optional social features. |
| Platforms listed by official pages | PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. | PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch; the official page states that cross-platform play is supported. |
| Setting and tone | A colorful school for escape-room training, with handcrafted challenges and a broader single-player option. | A frozen-wasteland and castle premise with a more tightly defined two-player, split-information structure. |
The short version is practical rather than technical: pick Escape Academy for flexibility and couch co-op; pick We Were Here for a communication-first online partnership.

Escape Academy treats the escape room as the main format. Its official site says it is “entirely playable in single player or co-op with a friend – local or online.” The game’s store description also lists single-player, online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer features.

Solo is a genuine option
If you do not have a second player available, Escape Academy still has a stated way to play. That changes the buying decision: you are not purchasing a game that becomes unusable when a partner is unavailable. You can learn its puzzle language alone, then invite someone for co-op later.
Local play is the strongest practical advantage
For two people in the same room, Escape Academy supports local two-player split-screen. You can use one console or computer setup rather than arranging two separate devices and an online voice connection. This makes it the more straightforward choice for a couple, family, or group already gathered around a television.
Online co-op remains available
Online play gives Escape Academy the flexibility to work when players are in different homes. The official descriptions identify two-player co-op, so plan around a pair rather than a larger party. Confirm the current store’s invitation and ownership requirements on your platform before buying; the available material does not establish whether every storefront configuration requires a separate copy for each participant.
What the original We Were Here is designed to do
We Were Here is built around two people who cannot simply look at the same puzzle. One player is the Librarian, confined to a secluded part of the castle. The other is the Explorer, who moves through the halls and guides the Librarian. The players possess different pieces of information and must combine them.
Asymmetry is the point, not a side effect
In a conventional shared-screen puzzle, both players can point at the same symbol or reach for the same object. We Were Here removes that shortcut. You may see a diagram your partner cannot see, while your partner can access a mechanism or route that is invisible to you. Progress depends on translating what is in front of you into words the other person can act on.

- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Conversation is part of the puzzle system
The official page describes rooms that test the players’ ability to communicate clearly, work together, and think outside the box, using voice and a walkie-talkie. That means the quality of your callouts matters. “There are three shapes” is less useful than “from left to right: a triangle with a dot, a hollow circle, then a square with two diagonal lines.”
It assumes two online participants
The official description frames the game as a cooperative adventure for two and does not present solo play. If your intended partner is unavailable, the game’s defining structure does not offer the same fallback as Escape Academy. Treat a reliable second player and a working voice channel as prerequisites, not bonuses.
How the puzzle experiences differ
Escape-room breadth versus role-based dependency
Escape Academy gives you the recognizable escape-room loop: inspect a themed space, identify clues, combine information, and solve a sequence of challenges. Because it can be played alone or locally, the same general format can fit different group arrangements.
We Were Here makes the relationship between players the central obstacle. A solution may be easy to execute once both people have exchanged the right details, but reaching that point requires questioning, confirming, and correcting descriptions. The challenge is partly spatial and partly conversational.
What each game rewards
- Escape Academy rewards adaptable problem solving. A solo player can work at their own pace, while a local pair can divide attention across a shared split-screen session.
- We Were Here rewards disciplined communication. Players who enjoy describing visual patterns, checking assumptions, and asking targeted questions will get more from its format.
- Both reward patience. Neither format is improved by guessing quickly when a clue has not been described accurately.
What can feel difficult
Escape Academy’s potential difficulty is the puzzle itself: recognizing a clue, finding its matching lock or mechanism, and working through the intended sequence. We Were Here adds a second failure point: you can solve the logic on your side and still stall because the other player has not received a usable description. That is not an incidental communication problem; it is the game’s intended friction.

Choosing by your play situation
| Your situation | Better first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You may play alone | Escape Academy | Its official site explicitly supports single-player play. |
| Two people share one room and one screen | Escape Academy | It supports local two-player split-screen. |
| Two people live apart and want a voice-led challenge | We Were Here | Its two-role, different-information design makes conversation the core activity. |
| You want to switch between solo and co-op | Escape Academy | It supports both modes in the official description. |
| You want a game where neither player can see everything | We Were Here | The Librarian and Explorer receive different information by design. |
| You need Nintendo Switch included in the official platform list | We Were Here | The official page lists Nintendo Switch; Escape Academy’s cited official list names PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games Store. |
| You want the broadest possible cross-platform assumption | Check the exact store pairing first | We Were Here states that cross-platform play is supported, but the broad statement does not enumerate every device-to-device combination. |
Platform compatibility and cross-play
Escape Academy’s official page lists PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Steam’s feature list includes cross-platform multiplayer. Those listings establish broad availability, but they do not by themselves prove that every version can play with every other version.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The original We Were Here page links to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch and states that cross-platform gameplay is supported. “Cross-platform” is not a guarantee that any two specific storefronts or console generations can be combined. Before purchasing, check the current store or support information for the exact pair of devices you and your partner will use.
A pre-purchase compatibility check
- Write down both players’ exact platforms, including console generation and storefront.
- Open the current listing for the edition each player plans to buy.
- Look for the platform’s multiplayer and cross-play notes rather than relying on a general series description.
- Confirm whether online multiplayer requires an active platform subscription or account setting in your region.
- Check whether each player needs an individual copy. The reviewed official material does not settle that question for every store configuration.
Communication, microphones, and accessibility
We Were Here’s official description makes voice communication central. A microphone is therefore a practical requirement for a comfortable session, even though the cited material does not state that a particular headset model is mandatory. Built-in microphones, a console headset, or another working voice setup may be sufficient if both players can hear one another clearly.
A headset with a microphone is an optional purchase, not a guaranteed performance upgrade. The important test is intelligibility: can each player distinguish shape, color, orientation, order, and location words without background noise?
Communication habits that prevent avoidable stalls
- Agree on a vocabulary before starting: for example, “left” and “right” from the observer’s viewpoint, not from the room’s viewpoint.
- Describe one object at a time and wait for confirmation.
- Use positional references such as “upper-left corner” or “third symbol from the right,” then repeat the sequence once.
- Separate observation from interpretation: say “I see two red marks” before saying what you think they mean.
- When stuck, ask a focused question instead of repeating the entire room description.
Escape Academy’s local mode does not depend on an online voice purchase. Players in the same room can communicate normally while sharing the split-screen session.

Setting, tone, and session fit
Escape Academy: colorful training-school framing
Escape Academy uses a school setting built around handcrafted escape-room challenges. That framing gives the game a more approachable, activity-based identity: you are training to become an escape-room expert rather than trying to coordinate an expedition through an isolated castle. The broader solo and local options also make it easier to fit into a casual evening or an irregular schedule.
We Were Here: frozen wilderness and castle isolation
We Were Here places its two players in a frozen-wasteland and castle premise. The isolated setting reinforces the split between the Librarian and Explorer. If you want the atmosphere of being separated from your partner and relying on a voice link, this is the more focused choice.
How much time to plan
The available official descriptions do not establish a guaranteed completion time for either game. Plan sessions around the mode rather than a promised hour count: Escape Academy can be started alone or with a local partner, while We Were Here works best when both online players can remain available for a continuous communication-heavy session.

Steam lists Escape Academy’s release date as July 13, 2022, identifies Coin Crew Games as developer and iam8bit Presents as publisher, and shows DLC and an edition bundle. Prices and sale terms change by platform, region, and date, so a cached figure is not a dependable comparison. Check the live listing for the edition and device you intend to use.
The official We Were Here page links to multiple digital storefronts. The cited material does not provide a directly comparable current price, nor does it establish whether every platform requires two separate purchases for two-player online play. Do not assume that a bundle, trial, or ownership-sharing rule on one storefront applies to another.

What the available audience figure means
In a May 31, 2023 announcement, 5th Planet Games A/S reported that Escape Academy had reached more than one million players across all platforms since release. That is a cumulative historical audience figure. It is not a current active-player count, a sales total, or a head-to-head statistic against We Were Here. No directly comparable published player or sales figure for We Were Here is established in the material available here.
Step-by-step: setting up Escape Academy
For solo play
- Choose the current Escape Academy edition for your platform.
- Confirm that the listing includes single-player mode.
- Launch the game and begin a solo session; no second player or voice connection is required.
- If you later want company, use the game’s local or online two-player option rather than buying a different title.
For local co-op
- Install the game on the supported console or computer setup.
- Connect the second controller or input device.
- Select the two-player local or split-screen option shown by the current version.
- Choose who will use each controller and start the selected challenge.
- Keep the screen arrangement and controller assignments visible to both players before beginning a puzzle.
For online co-op
- Verify both players’ platforms and the current cross-platform notes.
- Confirm account, network, and platform-multiplayer requirements for each region.
- Check the store terms for whether both participants need a copy.
- Launch the same game version and use its current online invitation flow.
- Test voice communication before entering a puzzle so a connection problem is not mistaken for a gameplay problem.
Step-by-step: setting up We Were Here
- Choose the original We Were Here listing for each player’s platform.
- Confirm that the two devices are an explicitly supported pairing in the current store or support information.
- Verify that both players have a working voice channel. The game’s core design depends on describing information to one another.
- Start an online two-player session and assign or accept the Librarian and Explorer roles shown by the game.
- Before solving, agree on your directional language and how you will identify symbols, colors, and sequence order.
- Describe what you can see, ask the other player to repeat the key details, and only then attempt the mechanism or route.
Troubleshooting the most likely problems
“We cannot play together on these devices.”
Do not infer compatibility from the fact that a game appears on both platforms. Recheck the exact current store listings, console generations, region, and cross-play notes. We Were Here’s broad cross-platform statement does not enumerate every possible pairing, and Escape Academy’s platform list is not a promise that all listed versions share one multiplayer pool.
“We bought the game but cannot start online co-op.”
Check that both players own the required edition, have completed the platform’s online-account requirements, and are running compatible versions. Because current prices, editions, and ownership rules vary, the store page for your region is the authoritative place to resolve the purchase question.
“The other player cannot understand my clues.”
In We Were Here, treat this as a communication error first. Define a viewpoint, use numbered positions, describe visual details literally, and ask for confirmation. Avoid saying “the obvious one” or “the symbol near it”; those references are ambiguous when the other player sees a different room.
“We want couch co-op, but the game keeps expecting online play.”
That is a reason to choose Escape Academy. Its official description explicitly includes local co-op and split-screen. The original We Were Here is described as a two-player cooperative adventure whose players occupy separate roles; it is not presented as a local shared-screen alternative.
Should you play the later We Were Here games instead?
We Were Here Too and We Were Here Forever are later entries that retain online two-player asymmetrical puzzle play, with communication and teamwork still central to their official descriptions. They are sensible follow-ups if the original format is exactly what you want, but they are not substitutes for the title’s original-game comparison when your decision is about the first We Were Here.
The official series announcement describes We Were Here Tomorrow as an upcoming entry for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S with crossplay. Treat it as upcoming rather than an available alternative unless the current official release information says otherwise.

A final decision checklist
- Choose Escape Academy if solo play matters at all.
- Choose Escape Academy if two people will play on one screen.
- Choose Escape Academy if you want to alternate between solo and co-op without changing games.
- Choose We Were Here if both players are available online and enjoy explaining information neither person can fully see.
- Choose We Were Here if asymmetric roles and walkie-talkie-style conversation sound more appealing than a conventional escape-room setup.
- Check the exact platform pairing and ownership requirement before either purchase; broad platform lists do not answer every storefront combination.
On the evidence of the official mode descriptions, Escape Academy is the all-purpose recommendation, while We Were Here is the specialist recommendation for a committed two-person online team. The deciding question is not which game has “better” puzzles in the abstract; it is whether you need flexibility or want communication itself to be the puzzle.
