How to troubleshoot crashes, stuttering, or missing settings after a game engine change

Protect the project, identify the failing stage, and use logs, configuration files and frame-time evidence to separate migration bugs from shader compilation, cache rebuilds and platform-specific problems.

What engine and exact versions are involved, which operating system and target platform are you using, which renderer or graphics API is selected, and at what point does the symptom appear: editor startup, project import, compilation, export, or runtime? Record those facts before changing anything. They determine which compatibility notes and recovery path apply.

The safest workflow is to preserve a rollback copy, reproduce the problem on that copy, read the target version’s upgrade notes and logs, then change one variable at a time. A crash can be a script or plugin incompatibility; a hitch can be first-use shader compilation rather than weak hardware; and a setting that disappeared from a panel may still exist in a configuration file or runtime state.

Item What to capture Why it matters
Engine Engine name, exact source version, exact target version, and whether the target is a stable, beta, or preview build Upgrade behavior and supported packages differ between minor versions.
Machine Operating system build, CPU, GPU, graphics-driver version, RAM, and storage location Drivers, compositors, and hardware features can change rendering and frame-time behavior.
Project target Desktop, console, mobile, Web, or another export target; architecture if relevant A project can work in the editor while failing in a platform-specific build.
Renderer Rendering backend or API, such as Direct3D, Vulkan, Metal, or an engine-specific renderer Shader, pipeline, and feature compatibility is renderer-specific.
Failure stage Editor launch, project import, script compilation, asset processing, build/export, or runtime The stage narrows the likely subsystem and the useful log.
Reproduction Scene or map, actions that trigger it, frequency, and whether it happens on first use only Repeatable steps let you compare versions under identical conditions.

Save the engine log, editor console output, crash dump if available, and a frame-time capture from both the old and new versions. Do not edit several project settings before collecting this baseline: each change makes the original cause harder to identify.

Protect the original project before conversion

Use version control or a separate backup

Make a commit or tagged checkpoint before opening the project in the newer engine. If version control is unavailable, copy the project folder to another location or an external drive. Unity identifies version control as its recommended backup practice and notes that generated Library data can often be omitted from a manual backup because the editor can regenerate it. Follow the engine’s own upgrade guidance for the version you are moving to: Unity’s project upgrade guide.

Keep the untouched copy closed in the newer editor. Test conversions on a duplicate so that an automated asset or serialization change cannot overwrite your rollback point.

Use Unreal’s copy workflow

When Unreal offers the conversion choice, select Open a Copy. Epic states that a project updated to a newer Unreal version cannot be opened in an older version; an in-place conversion can cause irreversible data corruption or loss if conversion fails. If conversion reports an error, preserve the error log and resolve the named cause before trying again. See Epic’s project update documentation, which puts the compatibility boundary plainly: “After you update a project to a newer version of Unreal Engine, you will not be able to open it in an older Unreal Engine version.”

Identify the stage that fails

Separate these cases before applying a fix:

  • Editor startup crash: the editor or project manager closes before the project is usable. Suspect editor plugins, native extensions, damaged metadata, drivers, or an incompatible project version.
  • Import or compile failure: the editor opens but scripts, shaders, packages, or assets report errors. Treat the first error as the lead; later messages may be consequences.
  • Build or export failure: the editor is functional, but platform tooling, package versions, templates, or excluded files break the output.
  • Runtime crash: the exported game fails in a particular scene, device, or graphics backend. Compare a development build’s log with the editor result.
  • Stutter: determine whether the hitch happens once per material or effect, after every restart, during traversal, or continuously under load.
  • Missing setting: verify whether the control was renamed, moved behind an advanced view, supplied by a plugin, represented by a default value, or overridden at runtime.

If the editor crashes or the project will not compile

Unity projects

If compilation errors appear while opening, use Unity’s Safe Mode and fix the reported errors before waiting for the rest of the project to import. Review the Console for compiler errors and deprecations, then inspect Package Manager for packages that do not support the target editor. Custom scripts, shaders, native plugins, and third-party assets deserve separate checks. Build for the actual target platform rather than relying only on a successful editor session, and compare the same project in the backed-up prior editor version. Unity’s upgrade guidance specifically recommends resolving compilation issues, updating incompatible packages, and testing target platforms.

Change one dependency at a time. If removing a package makes the project open, restore the backup and confirm that package is the trigger before changing unrelated rendering or quality settings.

Godot projects

If Godot crashes immediately from Project Manager, open the project in recovery mode. Investigate editor plugins, GDExtensions, and other project-level code first; disable one extension, retry, and record the result. The official troubleshooting page describes recovery-mode use and common project causes: Godot troubleshooting.

Once the editor opens, re-enable extensions individually. A project that launches only with plugins disabled is not evidence that the engine core is broken; it identifies a compatibility boundary that must be checked against the target Godot version.

Unreal projects

For a failed conversion, start with the conversion error log rather than repeatedly reopening the project. Check whether the project uses systems that require manual migration. Epic’s UE4-to-UE5 material identifies Nanite, Lumen, and Chaos among areas that may require project-specific updates; the Unreal Engine 5 Migration Guide provides the version-specific details.

Do not assume a completed conversion migrated every custom asset, plugin, build script, or gameplay system. Re-test those separately after the basic project loads. If the newer editor itself crashes, compare a blank project using the same renderer and driver; that distinguishes a machine-wide problem from project content.

Diagnose stuttering without guessing at the hardware

Classify first-use shader or pipeline compilation

Play the same route twice and note exactly where the hitch occurs. A pause the first time a material, effect, or mesh is encountered—and a much smoother second pass—points toward shader or pipeline compilation. A graphics-driver update can invalidate a shader cache and make those first encounters happen again. Godot documents this pattern and notes that Godot 4.4 and later use an ubershader approach for Forward+ and Mobile renderers. Projects using the Compatibility renderer may need to render meshes and effects during level loading to move compilation out of gameplay. Details are in Godot’s stutter guidance.

For Unreal, inspect shader and pipeline state object (PSO) behavior rather than disabling effects at random. Epic recommends PSO precaching and profiling PSO misses or late PSOs in its explanation of shader stutter: Game Engines and Shader Stuttering.

Separate persistent frame-time spikes

If the hitch repeats in the same location every time, profile CPU and GPU frame times. Traversal stutter can come from synchronous loading, excessive spawning, streaming, scene captures, or another expensive operation even when shaders are already compiled. Capture the old and upgraded project in the same scene, resolution, quality preset, renderer, and camera path. Compare frame-time spikes, not just an average frames-per-second number.

Use the engine profiler to identify whether the long frame is on the main thread, render thread, GPU, loading system, or garbage collector. Then change only the implicated system—for example, asynchronous loading instead of synchronous asset work—before judging the upgrade.

Do not treat V-Sync as a universal fix

Disabling V-Sync can make some display timing problems less noticeable, but it can introduce tearing and cannot remove a large shader-compilation hitch. Godot explicitly warns about this trade-off in its stutter documentation. If the issue appears only in one window mode or operating-system compositor, test window mode, driver version, background processes, and compositor behavior as separate variables rather than combining them.

Find settings that appear to be missing

Unreal: inspect configuration files and plugins

Unreal’s Project Settings editor writes project values to Config/DefaultEngine.ini; platform-specific .ini files can override or add values for only their platform. The Project Settings window can export and import settings, which is useful for comparing a pre-upgrade file with the converted project. Plugins may contribute their own categories, so verify that the plugin is installed and enabled before concluding that its settings were removed. Epic documents the storage and editor behavior in Project Settings in Unreal Engine.

Compare files with a text diff while preserving the target platform’s override order. A value in the default file may be superseded by a platform file or command-line argument, so the visible editor value is not always the runtime value.

Godot: distinguish defaults, advanced controls, and runtime state

Godot does not write every default into project.godot. An absent key can therefore mean “using the engine default,” not “deleted during upgrade.” Turn on Advanced Settings in the Project Settings window to reveal controls hidden from the basic view. Many settings are read only at startup; if code changes them later, inspect the corresponding runtime property or method instead of assuming the saved editor value is current. The configuration model is described in Godot’s Project Settings documentation.

When comparing versions, record both the saved file and the value reported while the game is running. This catches startup-only settings, project overrides, and code that intentionally changes a value after initialization.

Unity: check version notes and package ownership

Unity can deprecate APIs, move workflows, or require package changes without deleting the underlying project data. Read the upgrade guide and release notes for the exact target editor, then verify package versions and custom build templates. For example, the Unity 6.3 documentation says the UPM_NPM_CACHE_PATH environment variable is no longer supported and calls out Android build-tool changes that may affect projects with custom Gradle templates or older plugins: Unity 6.3 upgrade guidance.

If exported files or assets are missing

Godot export filters

A project can run correctly in the editor while an exported Godot build omits a file. Non-resource files, including JSON, may require an explicit inclusion filter in the Export dialog. Check the export preset’s filters before changing load code.

Case-sensitive paths

Compare every filename and folder name character by character. Godot’s exported PCK filesystem is case-sensitive even when the default Windows filesystem is not. A reference to Data/config.json will not necessarily find data/Config.json in the exported package. The export and path checks are covered by Godot’s troubleshooting documentation.

Test the packaged build on the target operating system, not only from the editor. Keep a manifest of files that must ship and verify it against the exported package when a load failure occurs.

Handle caches deliberately

Do not purge every cache as a reflex. A cache rebuild can explain a temporary increase in import or load time, but it does not prove that the upgrade caused a permanent performance regression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Unreal, the Derived Data Cache (DDC) stores regenerable data derived from source assets. Missing cached files can make loading dramatically slower while the engine rebuilds them. Epic recommends checking logs for LogDerivedDataCache when Unreal appears not to read cached data; its DDC documentation is at Using Derived Data Cache in Unreal Engine.

Record cache state before deleting anything. If a clean cache improves correctness, determine which generated artifact was stale and whether the behavior returns after the next driver or engine update. Keep source assets and the rollback copy intact while testing.

Use a controlled comparison

When the project works in the old version but regresses in the new one, compare on the right axes:

Axis Controlled comparison What a difference suggests
Engine Same project revision in the old and new exact versions A version-specific migration, API, serializer, or compiler change.
Renderer Same renderer and graphics API, then one alternate backend at a time Backend-specific shader, driver, or feature behavior.
Content Blank scene, minimal reproduction, then the failing scene Project content or a plugin rather than the editor installation.
Platform Same OS, driver, resolution, window mode, and target build settings Platform override, compositor, or export-tool difference.
Warm-up First run versus repeated run after shaders and assets are loaded Compilation or cache work versus a persistent frame-time problem.
Configuration Saved files, editor-visible values, command-line arguments, and runtime values Defaults, overrides, startup-only reads, or plugin-owned settings.

Change one variable, reproduce the same steps, and record the result. If you cannot reproduce the issue consistently, keep collecting the trigger conditions—scene, camera path, hardware, driver, and timing—before making broad project changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Write down the engine, exact old and new versions, OS, GPU and driver, renderer, target platform, and failure stage.
  2. Commit the project or make a separate manual copy; never use the only copy for conversion.
  3. Reproduce on the copy and save logs before editing settings.
  4. For startup crashes, use the engine’s recovery or safe mode and disable plugins or extensions one at a time.
  5. For compile errors, fix the first error, then update incompatible packages and test the target platform.
  6. For stutter, repeat the same route to classify first-use compilation versus recurring frame-time spikes.
  7. Profile CPU, GPU, loading, streaming, spawning, scene-capture, and PSO work instead of inferring a hardware limit from an FPS number.
  8. For missing settings, inspect configuration files, advanced views, plugin status, platform overrides, and runtime properties.
  9. For missing exported files, verify export filters and exact path capitalization.
  10. Check cache logs and rebuild behavior before deleting derived data.
  11. Compare the old and new versions under identical conditions and keep a written record of every change.
