The Elder Scrolls Online Direct on April 10, 2025, announced a year of story and content releases, led by Subclassing: a free Update 46 feature that lets players replace up to two of a character’s class skill lines. Bethesda also outlined the 2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition, the two-part Seasons of the Worm Cult story on Solstice, a cooperative Writhing Wall event, two dungeon packs, and tools for returning players. Update 46 and Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1 were later confirmed live on all platforms on June 18, 2025.
What did ESO Direct 2025 announce?
Bethesda’s April 10, 2025 announcement set out a year of new quests, stories, and locations, alongside two ways to get that year’s releases: the 2025 Content Pass and Premium Edition. The announcement described these as plans for the year; its release windows should not be read as a current availability list.

Dungeon packs
Fallen Banners and Feast of Shadows were each announced as a four-player PvE dungeon pack containing two dungeons. Bethesda described each dungeon as having its own story, challenges, achievements, and rewards.
What is ESO Subclassing?
Subclassing lets a character replace up to two of its three class skill lines with skill lines from the other six classes. It is designed to support hybrid builds while retaining at least one of the character’s original class lines. It does not grant three additional lines or let a character equip every class line at once.
#1 Best Overall
- The award-winning fantasy role-playing series, The Elder Scrolls, goes online--with no game subscription required.
- Experience the world of Tamriel on your own, or together with friends, guild mates, and thousands of other players.
- The Elder Scrolls Online: Gold Edition comes bundled with 4 DLC Game Packs.
Subclassing is part of free Update 46, not a feature limited to the paid 2025 Content Pass or Premium Edition. ESO Game Director Rich Lambert described the goal as giving players “even more freedom and flexibility in how you play your character, without having to reroll a new one and lose all the time and progress you have put in over the years.” The comment appeared in the April 10 PlayStation Blog interview.
How to unlock Subclassing
- Have at least one level-50 character on your account.
- Use that character to begin the short Subclassing system quest.
- Follow the quest to access the system and configure your character’s eligible class skill lines.
Bethesda’s June 18 launch notice confirms the level-50-character requirement and short quest. The launch announcement also says Update 46 was live on all platforms.

- Venture to elsweyr-explore the Khajiit homeland; A land ravaged by warfare.
- Defend against dragons - Scaled terror attacks from the skies; Seek new allies and weapons to take them down.
- A year-long epic tale-Eso reaches new storytelling heights with a war against Dragons told across a chapter and three DLC game packs.
- Wield the power of Necromancy - Master control over life and death with a character class that channels the undead.
Other Update 46 changes
The official PC/Mac patch notes also list PC user-interface updates, stackable Master Writs, and other quality-of-life changes. These are separate from the Subclassing feature. See the Update 46 PC/Mac patch notes.
What is Seasons of the Worm Cult?
Seasons of the Worm Cult is a two-part story set on Solstice, an island divided by the Writhing Wall. It brings back the Worm Cult and continues a storyline connected to ESO’s original main quest. Bethesda said players did not need to finish the original base-game story before beginning the new saga.

Part 1 introduced the Western Solstice zone, a 12-player Ossein Cage Trial, zone activities, item sets, collectibles, and Antiquities. In its June 18, 2025 notice, Bethesda said Eastern Solstice and Part 2 were due later in Q4 2025. That was the schedule stated at launch, not confirmation of present-day availability.
The Writhing Wall event
The Writhing Wall is the barrier separating the two parts of Solstice. The Direct described a planned server-wide event in which players would work together to break it and open the way to the second part. Executive Producer Susan Kath called it “a new server-wide event—the shattering of the Writhing Wall—that will see players’ collaborative actions determine the outcome of the conflict.” That description is from the PlayStation Blog interview.

When did Update 46 arrive on consoles?
Update 46 and Seasons of the Worm Cult Part 1 launched first on PC and Mac, then arrived on Xbox and PlayStation on June 18, 2025. Xbox Wire’s June 8 recap gave that timing, and Bethesda’s June 18 notice subsequently confirmed the all-platform launch. See Xbox Wire’s June 8 recap and Bethesda’s June 18 confirmation.
What is Hero’s Return?
Hero’s Return is a set of tools and guidelines aimed at players coming back to ESO. Bethesda’s launch notice highlights a combat refresher, a Golden Pursuits campaign, and login rewards. It was announced as part of the broader 2025 plans, alongside the content releases and Update 46.

How Bethesda framed the 2025 shift
Executive Producer Susan Kath said, “We’ve talked recently about our plans to move away from the yearly Chapter release model, and this year is where we’ll start that evolution.” The statement appeared in the April 10 interview and explains the context for presenting the year’s content through a Content Pass and Premium Edition rather than as a single traditional Chapter. It describes the direction announced in 2025, not a guarantee about the game’s current release model.
