Espgaluda II is a Cave bullet-hell shooter whose home editions are more than faithful arcade ports: they offer distinct variants with different survival and scoring systems. The Nintendo Switch version is especially broad, with multiple modes, characters and beginner options, but it remains complex—and its English localization can make learning harder. Availability also depends on the edition: the Switch eShop listing was reported delisted by December 2024, while a physical Switch release followed in 2024.
What kind of game is Espgaluda II?
Espgaluda II is a vertically scrolling arcade-style shooter from Cave, built around weaving through dense bullet patterns and managing its Awakening mechanics. Its appeal is not just survival: scoring and risk management are closely tied to how players handle the screen’s threats.

The home versions add meaningful alternatives to the arcade game. CAVE describes the Xbox 360 Black Label release as a five-mode port with higher-resolution graphics; the Black Label version also makes Seseri playable and renews the music. The Switch release likewise presents several variants rather than one mode with cosmetic changes.
How the Switch modes differ
Nintendo Life’s European Switch review describes six selectable types at the outset and a seventh bonus style unlocked later. The exact experience changes substantially between variants, so mastering one does not automatically prepare you for another.

#1 Best Overall
- Three characters with different attack characteristics
- Novice mode prepared for beginners and arrangement mode prepared exclusively for the home version
- Highly reproducible arcade mode and high-quality game mode
- Simultaneous recording of new game rules and a black label version developed by another added girl
- Screen setting options that can be enjoyed in vertical mode
| Variant or feature | What changes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Arcade / Normal | The preserved arcade game, with its original style of play. | A demanding baseline for players who want the arcade experience. |
| Arrange | Introduces red-and-blue bullet cancelling. | A distinct system that changes how you respond to incoming fire. |
| Black Label | Uses a chain meter not used elsewhere in the game. | Its scoring and play rhythm differ from the other variants. |
| Novice modes | Reduce the number of bullets on screen while retaining the central Awakening mechanics. | A gentler entry point, not a replacement for learning the underlying systems. |
These descriptions reflect the variants highlighted in the review; they are not a universal difficulty ranking. A mode that feels manageable to one player may be challenging to another, and the rule changes matter as much as bullet density.
Is Espgaluda II beginner friendly?
It offers help, but it is not simple. Novice modes reduce screen pressure while keeping the core mechanics in play, giving newcomers a less punishing place to learn. The Switch version also includes non-interactive tutorials covering its variants and mechanics, along with extensive display and screen-rotation options.

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes

The tutorial text is a notable weakness. In Nintendo Life’s review, Kerry Brunskill reported rough, inconsistent English, some Japanese text left untranslated, and terminology that shifts between explanations. That can make the guidance less useful precisely when a newcomer needs clear definitions. If a tutorial’s wording is confusing, focus on the mode’s practical rule changes and learn through short runs rather than assuming every variant uses the same system.
What works—and what does not
Brunskill’s September 13, 2021 review praised the game’s variety, depth and flexible risk-reward scoring, noting that its structure can suit both quick sessions and long-term mastery. The review awarded the European Switch version 8/10. Its strengths are most apparent when you treat the modes as separate challenges rather than expecting one familiar ruleset to carry across the whole game.

- Features exclusive cover artwork only available on Amazon
- Wield fun weapons: tanks, helicopters, dinosaurs, toy hammers and more
- Master the head stomp, wall jump, slope slide and other cool skills
- Adventure through unique colorful themes in this vibrant platforming adventure
- Embark on side quests to discover surprising rewards
The review’s principal criticism was localization. It also reported that online leaderboards were greyed out and Score Attack did not function at the time of review. Those are launch-era observations, not confirmation of current online-service status.
Which edition should you look for?
The Switch version is the natural fit if you want several play variants, display customization and the later physical release. A physical edition developed by Cave Interactive and Live Wire and published by Clear River Games is listed with a September 30, 2024 release date, one to two players, and English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese languages.

- Explore each stage and then find even more secrets by making your way through the stage backwards on the flip side
- Overcome varied enemies and obstacles, like Zombie Guys, Skelesaurus, Ukiki, and Monty Mole as you seek out hidden collectables; ESRB Content: Mild Cartoon Violence; Genre: Action, Platformer
- Pass a Joy Con controller to a friend for 2 player cooperative exploration
- Clad Yoshi in collectable, protective, handicraft costumes as he makes his way through each stage
Digital and physical availability are separate questions. Nintendo Life’s page notes that the Switch eShop version had been delisted by December 2024, and says people who had not previously bought it could not download it. Clear River Games lists a physical Switch edition, but that does not establish current retailer stock or price. Check current retailer or platform listings before making plans to buy.
The Xbox 360 Black Label edition is a historical Japan-focused release from February 25, 2010. CAVE’s Japanese product page says the original and first-run editions included an original soundtrack, but the 2011 Platinum Collection did not; a manual error listed soundtrack tracks for that edition. Treat these as edition-specific collector details, not a guide to present-day used prices.

CAVE also released a smartphone version on April 10, 2010. Its historical feature list includes Arcade and Smartphone modes, three difficulty levels, configurable controls and display, and Game Center rankings and achievements on iOS. That product information does not establish whether the legacy app remains available in current app stores.

Espgaluda II is worth seeking out if you enjoy demanding shooters and want multiple rule sets to learn. The Switch version’s variety, preserved arcade play and beginner options give it room to grow with the player, but the modes require separate learning and the localization can muddy explanations. Choose it for mechanical depth, not for an effortless introduction to bullet hell.
