Gears of War: Reloaded makes the 2006 original easier to play on modern hardware—and, for the first time, brings the series to PlayStation. Its visual and performance upgrades make a strong first impression, but the game underneath is still the familiar cover shooter. That makes it an especially good entry point for newcomers, while returning players who recently played another edition may find less reason to come back.
What is Gears of War: Reloaded?
Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the original Gears of War, released on August 26, 2025. Xbox describes it as a remaster, not a ground-up remake. It builds on the content of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, the 2015 enhanced version of the game.
It is available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam. The release is a notable platform moment: a franchise long associated with Xbox is playable on PlayStation for the first time. Xbox announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $39.99 at launch; that is not a quote of today’s store price. Xbox Wire’s announcement has the launch details.
How much has the original changed?
Image quality and performance
Xbox lists 4K resolution, 4K assets and remastered textures, along with improved effects, shadows, and reflections. The publisher also specifies a 60 FPS campaign and 120 FPS multiplayer, plus HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and variable refresh rate support. These are publisher-listed specifications, not independently measured results.

#1 Best Overall
- The Original, Remastered: Powered by Unreal Engine, Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the blockbuster first Gears of War, now fully optimised for PlayStation 5.
- All Included: Gears of War: Reloaded delivers all post-launch content for the original title, including a bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps, plus characters and cosmetics, at no additional cost.
- Stunning Gameplay: The iconic original now looks and plays better than ever with no load times, 4K assets plus remastered textures, lighting, shadows and reflections, HDR, Dolby Atmos, Variable Refresh Rate as well as up to 120 FPS in multiplayer.*
- Cross Play: Supports cross-play across platforms, allowing you and your friends to squad-up, regardless of where you play.*
- Cross Progression: Jump from one platform to another and your campaign saves. Signing in with your Microsoft account is required for cross-progression.*
Those upgrades sharpen the presentation without changing the basic character of the game. The original’s ruined landscapes, bulky armor, and close-range firefights still define the experience; the difference is that they are presented with modern rendering and performance targets. The Coalition’s Studio Head Mike Crump recalled the original’s impact this way: “Gears of War set a new bar for graphical fidelity in 2006, and that’s what I remember about it – being in awe of how great it looked.” Xbox Wire’s launch article includes his comments.
Campaign and structure
The campaign remains the original story and design rather than a reimagining. Xbox says campaign loading screens have been removed. Reviewers at Windows Central describe the result as visually improved and more accessible, but also safe in how little it changes the underlying game.

- German packaging. German instructions. Completely German playable.
- 4K resolution 60 FPS in the campaign 120 FPS in multiplayer mode
- High Dynamic Range (HDR) Dolby Vision and 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 3D Room Sound
- Variable refresh rate (VRR) 4K assets and re-mastered textures Enhanced visual post-processing effects
- Improved shadows and reflections Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing. No loading screens during campaign
That continuity is part of the appeal for anyone curious about the series’ roots. It is also the limit for players hoping for a redesigned campaign or a substantially different take on the original.
What content is included?
Xbox says Reloaded includes the full breadth of Ultimate Edition content: the bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps and modes, and characters and cosmetics. It is therefore more complete than a simple port of the 2006 release. But it does not add a new campaign or a new generation of game systems; the main draw is having that expanded edition in a current multiplatform release.

How do co-op and multiplayer work?
Campaign co-op
The campaign supports two-player co-op. Cross-play lets friends on supported platforms play together. Xbox says signing in with a Microsoft account enables cross-platform invites and cross-progression. The official Gears of War game page also describes cross-play and progression support.
Versus multiplayer
Versus supports up to eight players, with cross-play across platforms. TechRadar’s PS5 review notes that multiplayer retains the series’ familiar shotgun-heavy focus. That close-range style is a defining part of classic Gears, but it may not suit players looking for a more modern or varied competitive feel.

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.
Who should play Gears of War: Reloaded?
Newcomers to Gears
This is the clearest audience. You get the original campaign and its additional Ultimate Edition material in a version designed for current platforms, with co-op available across supported systems. The technical updates reduce friction without asking you to know the series’ history first. Mike Crump put the appeal plainly: “I’m jealous of everyone who’s about to experience Gears for the first time because I remember what an amazing experience that was!”
Players returning after a long break
If you have not revisited the campaign in years, the cleaner presentation and convenient access on modern platforms can make the return worthwhile. The game also offers a straightforward way to revisit a foundational cover shooter before the series’ 20th anniversary in 2026.

Recent players and multiplayer regulars
If you played Ultimate Edition recently, the case is less compelling: the story and core design are familiar, and reviewers at Tom’s Guide likewise see limited differences for repeat players. Cross-platform play may still make it valuable for a group split across consoles and PC. For dedicated Versus players, expect the established shotgun-led combat rather than a wholesale multiplayer redesign.
Is it worth the price?
At the announced U.S. launch price of $39.99, Reloaded offers its strongest value to newcomers, lapsed fans, and groups who want cross-platform play. For someone who already owns and recently played Ultimate Edition, the visual and platform updates may not justify buying it again unless those changes solve a specific access or co-op need. Prices and subscription availability can change; check the store for your platform rather than treating the launch price or launch access terms as current.
Xbox announced Game Pass availability and a free-upgrade offer as launch terms. The free upgrade applied to qualifying digital Ultimate Edition purchases made before May 5, 2025, at 16:00 UTC. Those dated terms should not be read as an ongoing offer.
