Essencelord, a loot-driven action-adventure RPG by developer Tyler Lombard, is in development for Game Boy Color. You can try a browser-playable demo or download demo ROM files from the developer’s project page, but those files do not mean the full game has been released.
What is Essencelord?
Lombard describes Essencelord as “A loot-driven action adventure where gear and skills define your playstyle.” In the developer’s description, defeating enemies and bosses earns Essence, which can be used to level up and create gear. The game is also described as having semi-permanent gear: there is no inventory, so a new item replaces the gear currently equipped. A customizable Skill Modifier system is another part of the stated design. These are the developer’s descriptions of a project in development, not findings from an independent review.
An early development log published on February 19, 2026 called the project a “Diablo-like ARPG for the Gameboy Color.” That phrase captures the developer’s description of an early build; it should not be taken as a confirmed account of the final game’s scope.
Can you play Essencelord now?
Yes, in demo form. Lombard’s Essencelord project page lists the game as in development and offers a browser-playable demo, along with downloadable .gbc and .pocket demo files. The page does not establish that the complete game is available.

Is Essencelord coming to Kickstarter?
Time Extension reported on October 6, 2026 that Lombard’s Essencelord campaign was underway on Kickstarter. The report stated a campaign goal of $4,500 and listed physical editions, custom-color cartridges, and strategy guides among the rewards. These are details reported at that time, not confirmation of current funding, available reward tiers, shipping regions, or delivery estimates. Check the Time Extension report and the live campaign page for current terms before making a pledge; live campaign terms are not established here.
What hardware is it for?
Essencelord is being made for Game Boy Color. The developer also offers a .pocket demo file, but that alone does not confirm compatibility details for a finished release or any particular device. If considering a physical edition, treat the reported cartridge rewards as campaign possibilities rather than a game currently confirmed for sale.
