Peter Molyneux says the 2023 reveal trailer for Playground Games’ Fable reboot initially seemed “a little too fairytale-ish” to him. Later gameplay footage changed his impression: he said he was “very encouraged” and is now eager to play the game as a gamer, rather than as one of its developers. His comments come from a PCGamesN interview, as reported by GamesRadar+.

What concerned Molyneux about the first Fable trailer?

Molyneux’s concern was about the reboot’s tone, not a rejection of the project. In GamesRadar+’s 6 October 2026 report on its PCGamesN interview, he recalled being “a little bit worried about it, it seemed a little too fairytale-ish” after the first proper trailer appeared at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase. That trailer starred Richard Ayoade.

His broader reaction was also warm: he said it made him “immensely proud” that a game he loved being involved with was continuing, and that he had enjoyed watching the team’s work evolve.

Why did later footage change his view?

After seeing later gameplay footage, Molyneux said he was “very encouraged.” He felt Playground Games was preserving qualities that distinguished the series: “They’re keeping a lot of what made Fable different and special.”

  • A LEGEND RETURNS — Fable reimagines the beloved franchise with British wit, eccentric characters, and a richly detailed open world full of charm and surprises.

He remains curious about the alignment system and how it will affect the world visually. That is an open question for him, rather than a claim that the system or its effects have been fully shown.

Stage Molyneux’s reported reaction
2023 reveal trailer He worried the presentation seemed “a little too fairytale-ish.”
Later gameplay footage He was “very encouraged” and said the team was retaining what made Fable distinctive.
Playing the reboot He said he could not wait to experience it as a gamer.

Why does he expect to play this Fable differently?

Molyneux described this as a different experience from his relationship with earlier Fable games: “In one way, this version of Fable will be the first Fable I’ve really played as a gamer.” He added, “And that’s going to be absolutely fascinating to play. I can’t wait.”

Fable II (Renewed)
  • Action RPG for Xbox 360 picks up 500 years after the first Fable and offers wide-ranging open-ended gameplay
  • Players can assume the role of either a boy or girl
  • Combat system allows for short-range, long-range and magic attacks
  • Currency earned in minigames on Live Arcade can be used in the game
  • Online multiplayer mode lets you bring other players into your world

The distinction is personal: he is anticipating playing this version without the same developer role he had on the earlier games. He is not identified as part of Playground Games’ development team, and his enthusiasm is based on footage and anticipation—not a verdict on the finished game.
