For most Paper servers, install EssentialsX, LuckPerms and WorldEdit first. Add one protection system—WorldGuard or GriefPrevention—then CoreProtect for rollback investigations and spark for performance diagnosis. Add Vault only when you need shared economy data, chat prefixes or suffixes. Bedrock support requires a separate cross-play plan.

The 2026 core plugin stack
These three plugins appear most consistently in current server recommendations and cover the everyday foundation of a public or private server.
| Plugin | Primary job | Who needs it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| EssentialsX | Homes, warps, teleportation, kits, private messages, moderation and a basic economy | Almost any survival or community server | Supports CraftBukkit, Spigot and Paper; Paper is the recommended software, and other forks can introduce compatibility problems. |
| LuckPerms | Permissions, groups and role management | Any server with players who should have different commands or staff powers | The web editor opens with /lp editor. EssentialsX recommends LuckPerms for permissions and groups. |
| WorldEdit | Fast building and large-scale block editing | Creative servers, builders and administrators preparing maps | By default, nobody can use it. Grant permissions deliberately; worldedit.* provides full access. |
EssentialsX is the broad utility layer, LuckPerms decides who may use commands, and WorldEdit handles construction. They are complementary rather than alternatives: replacing one with another leaves a different operational gap.
#1 Best Overall
- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, three Bedrock add-ons, three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.
- SURVIVE THE ADVENTURE — Face mysterious foes, travel across exciting landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
Choose server software and check versions first
Install on Paper when possible. EssentialsX explicitly identifies Paper as its recommended server software while also supporting CraftBukkit and Spigot. A different fork may work, but the maintainers warn that compatibility problems are more likely.
Do not assume that a plugin supporting “Minecraft” supports every current release. Current guides reviewed for 2026 target different version ranges: one discusses Minecraft 26.2 with Paper or Purpur, while another lists Minecraft 1.20–1.21. Treat those as guide-specific ranges, not a universal support promise.

A search summary claims that Paper from Minecraft 26.1 onward may reject obfuscated plugins; that claim was not confirmed on a primary Paper page, so verify it directly before relying on it or upgrading older plugin jars.
Prepare the server before installing plugins
- Run a supported Java and Paper build for your Minecraft release, then start the server once so Paper creates its normal directories.
- Make a restorable backup of the world, server configuration and permissions data. Keep a copy outside the server machine before adding or updating plugins.
- Record your exact versions: Minecraft, Paper, Java and every plugin. This makes a failed update diagnosable.
- Use a staging copy for a large map, a new protection system or a major version jump. Test commands, joins, teleportation and permissions before touching the live world.
- Plan a least-privilege administrator account. Do not give every moderator a global wildcard simply because it is convenient.
Install in a safe order
- Stop the server cleanly. Never replace plugin jars while the server is writing files.
- Install EssentialsX and LuckPerms first. Put the matching jar files in the server’s
pluginsdirectory, start the server, and wait for each plugin to generate its configuration. - Review the console. A successful load should identify the plugin and version without a dependency or class-version error. Stop immediately if Paper reports an incompatible build.
- Configure LuckPerms before distributing staff roles. Use the in-game command system or the web editor opened with
/lp editor; apply the generated changes only after checking that the groups and inheritance are correct. - Add WorldEdit on a backup or staging copy. Grant access only to builders and administrators. Confirm that an ordinary player receives no WorldEdit capability.
- Add one protection plugin if the server needs claims or regions. Choose WorldGuard or GriefPrevention, not both, then test a normal player, a trusted player and a moderator in a disposable area.
- Add CoreProtect. Perform a test block change and confirm that the server can inspect and roll it back before opening to the public.
- Add spark when you need diagnostics. Keep it available for investigating lag rather than treating it as a gameplay feature.
- Add Vault only when an integration requires it. Restart, then test the economy, chat prefixes or shop/TAB integration that motivated the installation.
- Open the server gradually. Watch the console and player reports for missing commands, denied interactions, teleport loops or excessive tick time.
EssentialsX: the everyday foundation
EssentialsX bundles the commands that otherwise require several small utility plugins. Typical functions include setting homes and warps, teleporting, kits, private messages, moderation commands and a basic economy. That breadth makes it the most practical first installation for a survival community.
What to configure first
- Homes and warps: decide how many homes each group receives and who may create public warps.
- Teleportation: set expectations for requests, acceptance and cooldowns so teleport commands do not become a griefing tool.
- Kits: keep starter kits modest and make any repeatable kit’s timing explicit to players.
- Moderation: separate routine chat moderation from high-impact commands such as bans, invulnerability or world travel.
- Economy: define whether the built-in balance is merely a convenience or the authoritative currency for shops and rewards.
EssentialsX supports CraftBukkit, Spigot and Paper, with Paper recommended. If you use another fork, test every critical command after installation rather than assuming identical behavior.
LuckPerms: make permissions predictable
LuckPerms is the control layer that turns a collection of commands into a manageable server. Create groups for ordinary players, trusted players, moderators and administrators; then grant only the nodes each group needs. Use inheritance so a higher group receives the lower group’s permissions without copying every entry.

A practical permission workflow
- Start with a default group that can play but cannot administer, edit the world or inspect private data.
- Create staff groups with narrowly scoped moderation permissions.
- Assign temporary or trial roles separately from permanent staff roles.
- Test each group with a real account that is not op. Operator status can mask permission mistakes.
- Document every exception, especially a grant that overrides a protection rule.
The EssentialsX project documentation recommends LuckPerms for permissions and groups. Its web editor is opened with /lp editor; treat the generated link and editor session as administrative credentials, and review changes before applying them.
WorldEdit: powerful building with a safety boundary
WorldEdit is for builders and administrators who need to select, copy, paste or transform large areas quickly. It can save hours on terrain and structure work, but a selection mistake can damage an entire region.
WorldEdit 7.4 documentation states: “By default, no one can use WorldEdit.” That default is valuable. Keep it, then grant specific builder groups the smallest set of permissions they need. The worldedit.* node grants full access and should be reserved for trusted administrators.
Safe WorldEdit procedure
- Back up the world before a large operation.
- Practice the selection on a disposable copy or a small area.
- Check the selection boundaries visually and confirm the target world.
- Run one change at a time and inspect the result.
- Use
//undoimmediately if the operation is wrong, then restore from backup if the damage is broader than the command history can reverse.
WorldEdit is not a player-protection system. It edits blocks; it does not decide who may build in a claimed or region-protected area.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePick one protection system: WorldGuard or GriefPrevention
Protection is where server type matters most. Survival servers need a way to prevent unauthorized building, container access and terrain damage. Creative or minigame servers may instead use tightly controlled plots or map-specific rules.
| Choice | Best fit | Use it when | Decision warning |
|---|---|---|---|
| WorldGuard | Administrators who want explicit regions and flags | You need staff-defined boundaries, region priorities or detailed area rules | Requires careful region design and permission testing. |
| GriefPrevention | Survival communities that want player-oriented claims | You want players to protect their own builds with a simpler claiming model | Check how claims, trust and administrative overrides fit your moderation policy. |
Guides differ on which is preferable, but the operational rule is consistent: choose one protection system, not both. Running overlapping protection plugins can create contradictory build, container and interaction results that are difficult to explain to players and staff.
Rank #3
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
CoreProtect: investigate and roll back damage
CoreProtect records block activity so administrators can identify who changed an area and reverse grief. It is the standard recommendation when a server needs an audit trail rather than relying on screenshots or player reports.
Its official listing says it runs on Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, Folia, MultiPaper and other platforms. Confirm the build for your exact server before installation. After enabling it, test a complete incident path: make a controlled change, inspect the record, and perform a rollback on the test area. A rollback system that has never been tested is not a recovery plan.
CoreProtect complements protection rather than replacing it. Protection prevents or limits unwanted actions; CoreProtect helps you understand and reverse an action that still occurred.
spark: diagnose performance instead of guessing
spark is recommended for performance diagnosis. Use it when players report lag, the server misses ticks or you need evidence about a suspected plugin, world or activity spike. It is an observability tool, not a gameplay requirement.
Collect a profile during the problem, note the Minecraft and Paper versions and record what players were doing at the time. Compare an idle profile with a profile during the lag event. Do not remove a plugin solely because it appears in a profile: a plugin may be waiting on slow world operations or responding to another system. Reproduce the problem after each change.
Vault: install only when an integration needs it
Vault is the disputed item in current recommendations. One 2026 guide calls it essential because it bridges economy and permissions; another says to add it only when economy, TAB or shops require it. EssentialsX documentation says Vault is needed for prefix and suffix support.
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
The practical rule is simple: install Vault if you want chat prefixes or suffixes, a shared economy between plugins, or a plugin that explicitly lists Vault as a dependency. If your server uses EssentialsX commands without those integrations, Vault adds another component to maintain without solving a current problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bedrock cross-play: only if Bedrock players are part of the plan
Geyser and Floodgate are relevant when Bedrock players are expected to join a Java server. They are not essential to a Java-only server, and their compatibility was not verified against a primary source here. Treat cross-play as a separate deployment decision: confirm the current versions, authentication model and gameplay limitations before promising Bedrock access.
Recommended stacks by server type
| Server type | Start with | Add when needed | Usually avoid at first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small survival server | EssentialsX, LuckPerms, one protection plugin | CoreProtect for rollback; Vault for shared economy or prefixes; spark during lag investigations | WorldEdit for ordinary players and duplicate protection systems |
| Large public survival server | EssentialsX, LuckPerms, one protection plugin, CoreProtect | spark, Vault integrations and carefully scoped staff tools | Global wildcard permissions and untested economy bridges |
| Creative build server | LuckPerms and WorldEdit, with EssentialsX for travel and moderation | WorldGuard for build regions; CoreProtect for recovery | Player-facing survival claim systems that do not fit the build workflow |
| Minigame or event server | LuckPerms and only the utilities required by the game | EssentialsX for administration, CoreProtect for maps, spark for profiling | Installing every survival feature by default |
| Java server adding Bedrock players | The stack required by the Java game mode | Geyser/Floodgate after compatibility and authentication checks | Advertising cross-play before a full join, movement and permissions test |
Maintenance, upgrades and common failures
A plugin fails to load
Read the first error in the console, not only the final “disabled” line. Compare the plugin build with your Minecraft and Paper versions, check Java compatibility and confirm that required dependencies are installed. Remove only the incompatible jar, restore the prior working version and retest on a copy.
Players can use commands they should not have
Check whether the account is op, whether a parent group grants the permission, and whether a wildcard such as worldedit.* is inherited. Re-test with a non-op account after changing LuckPerms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlayers cannot build in an area
Identify which protection system owns the area, then inspect the claim or region, trust list, flags and group permissions. If both WorldGuard and GriefPrevention are installed, remove the overlap before debugging individual permissions.
A WorldEdit operation caused damage
Stop making further edits, use //undo where appropriate and restore the latest verified backup if the affected area exceeds the undo history. Do not treat a successful command response as proof that the selection was correct.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The server lags after an update
Use spark during the actual lag, compare the profile with a quiet period and check the console for repeating errors. Roll back one change at a time; changing several plugins simultaneously removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
A lean installation checklist
- Paper selected and the exact Minecraft/Paper versions recorded.
- World and configuration backups verified outside the live server.
- EssentialsX installed and core commands tested.
- LuckPerms groups created and tested with non-op accounts.
- WorldEdit restricted to trusted builders, with
//undounderstood. - Exactly one of WorldGuard or GriefPrevention selected where protection is required.
- CoreProtect test inspection and rollback completed.
- spark available for a reproducible performance investigation.
- Vault installed only for a documented economy, prefix, suffix, shop or TAB integration.
- Bedrock tools added only after a separate compatibility test.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need all of these plugins?
No. EssentialsX, LuckPerms and WorldEdit are the most consistent core recommendations, but a small vanilla-style server may need only EssentialsX and LuckPerms. Add protection, rollback, diagnostics and integrations according to the server’s actual risks.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I install both WorldGuard and GriefPrevention?
No. Choose one protection model. Using both can produce overlapping or contradictory rules and makes support harder.
Why does WorldEdit appear installed but do nothing?
WorldEdit’s default permission state allows nobody to use it. Grant the appropriate permissions through LuckPerms; reserve worldedit.* for fully trusted administrators.
Is Vault mandatory with EssentialsX?
Not for every EssentialsX installation. Add it when you need prefix or suffix support, a shared economy or a plugin that explicitly depends on Vault.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which three plugins should a new Paper server install first?
EssentialsX, LuckPerms and WorldEdit are the most consistently recommended core trio. Restrict WorldEdit until permissions are configured.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I install to undo griefing?
Use CoreProtect for investigation and rollback, alongside one protection plugin to prevent or limit unauthorized changes.
How often should plugin compatibility be checked?
Check every plugin against the exact Minecraft and Paper versions whenever you install or upgrade it; compatibility changes with server releases.
