EssentialsX Protect is an add-on module for the EssentialsX Minecraft server plugin. “EssentialsProtect” is a common shorthand, but Protect is not a standalone plugin: the main EssentialsX module must already be installed. Its settings are in plugins/Essentials/config.yml, under protect:, where you can manage server-wide environmental damage, mob spawning controls, and selected gameplay mechanics.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This guide covers installation, safe YAML editing, the three Protect sections, applying changes, testing, and the boundary between server-wide controls and region protection.

What EssentialsX Protect does
Protect is the protection module distributed as part of EssentialsX. It reads the same configuration file as the EssentialsX core and applies broad server-level rules. Typical uses include stopping creepers from damaging blocks, controlling fire spread, restricting certain spawn behavior, and disabling selected mechanics such as fire damage.
The module is designed for global settings rather than per-area administration. A rule in Protect affects the server context in which EssentialsX handles it; it is not a region-selection system with separate flags for every town, arena, or claim.

Protect is not a standalone plugin
Installing only a Protect jar is not a complete setup. Install the EssentialsX core and the Protect add-on together in the server’s plugins/ directory. The core supplies the configuration and module framework that Protect uses.
Where the settings live
Protect uses plugins/Essentials/config.yml. On the first successful boot after installing EssentialsX, the core also creates plugins/Essentials/kits.yml. The kit file is unrelated to Protect, but its appearance is a useful sign that EssentialsX has generated its normal data files.
Recommended Free Tools
Before you install
- Confirm that the server is stopped before copying plugin jars into its files, or use the hosting panel’s documented upload procedure.
- Keep a backup of the entire
plugins/Essentials/folder, especiallyconfig.yml, before editing. - Use a code-aware text editor such as Visual Studio Code or Notepad++, not a word processor.
- Make sure you can perform a full server restart. A restart is the reliable recovery path if a reload does not apply a setting or if a configuration error prevents EssentialsX from loading.
Compatibility with a particular Minecraft, Paper, or Spigot version should be checked against the EssentialsX build you plan to use. The available setup material does not establish a universal version matrix, so do not assume that a jar built for one server version is valid for every other version.
EssentialsX Protect setup
- Stop the server. Use the normal stop command or your host’s stop control so files are closed cleanly.
- Install EssentialsX core. Place the main EssentialsX jar in the server’s
plugins/folder. - Install the Protect add-on. Place the EssentialsX Protect jar in that same folder. Keep the core and add-on builds from the same release family unless the release documentation says otherwise.
- Start the server. Allow EssentialsX to create its data directory and default files. The first boot creates
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlandplugins/Essentials/kits.yml. - Stop the server again before editing. Editing a file while the server is running can be overwritten when the plugin saves its configuration.
- Open the configuration. In
plugins/Essentials/config.yml, search forprotect:. Some guides place this block around line 935 in a particular version, but line numbers change between releases; searching for the section is safer.
Do not use the in-game /reload command as a substitute for the installation restart. A clean restart is the recommended way to load newly added jars and generate defaults.
Understanding the protect block
The Protect configuration is organized into three functional subsections. Their exact child keys and default values can vary by EssentialsX version, so preserve the keys generated in your own file and change only the values you understand.
| Section | Purpose | Examples described by the guides | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prevent | Blocks or limits environmental and entity damage events. | Creeper block damage; fire spread. | Server-wide behavior handled by Protect. |
| Spawn | Controls selected mob-spawn behavior. | Restricting spawn eggs when they are being abused. | Server-wide spawn controls. |
| Disable | Turns selected game mechanics off. | Fire damage through the firedmg option. |
Server-wide mechanic toggle. |
Think of the sections by the event you want to change: an event that causes damage belongs under Prevent, an unwanted creature-creation route belongs under Spawn, and a mechanic that should not run at all belongs under Disable.

Configuring Prevent
Stop creepers from damaging blocks
If your goal is to keep creeper explosions while preventing terrain damage, look in the generated prevent: subsection for the creeper block-damage setting. Change the existing value supplied by your version rather than inventing a new key. This distinction matters: “creepers can explode” and “creepers can destroy blocks” are separate outcomes, and the Protect setting described by the guides targets block damage.
After saving, test in a controlled area with a backup or temporary test world. Verify both that the explosion occurs as expected and that nearby blocks remain intact. If the setting has no effect, follow the reload-and-restart procedure below before changing more values.
Control fire spread
Fire spread is another Prevent example. Locate the fire-spread entry already present beneath prevent: and change its Boolean value according to the behavior you want. Do not move the entry into disable:; the section reflects the type of event being prevented.
Test fire in a small, disposable area. Check a newly lit fire next to flammable blocks and observe whether the fire can propagate. This test isolates spread from fire damage: a setting that prevents spread does not necessarily make players immune to fire.
Other damage-related entries
Protect may expose additional prevention keys in the version you installed. Because the exact current key list and defaults were not established for every release, use the comments and names in your generated file as the authority. Keep the indentation and spelling exactly as generated, and change one related setting at a time so you can identify its effect.
Configuring Spawn
Restrict spawn eggs
The spawn: subsection is intended for mob-spawn controls. The setup guides specifically describe using it to restrict spawn eggs on servers where players abuse them. Find the spawn-egg entry generated in your file and adjust that value rather than adding a guessed key.

Test with the permissions and game mode used by ordinary players, not only with an operator account. A successful operator test can hide a permission or administrative exception that regular players will not have. Confirm the result with a harmless test egg in a secured area, then remove any temporary test entities.
Spawn controls are not a complete mob-management system
A Spawn rule addresses the behavior exposed by Protect; it does not automatically replace every world, difficulty, or server setting that influences mob creation. If a mob still appears, record how it spawned—natural spawning, a spawn egg, a command, or another plugin—before changing configuration. That observation tells you whether the event belongs to Protect’s Spawn subsection.

Configuring Disable
Turn off fire damage with firedmg
The guides identify firedmg under disable: as the option for turning off fire damage. Use the key already present in your configuration and set its Boolean value to the state that disables the mechanic in your release. Because defaults can differ, read the inline comment and verify the result in-game rather than assuming which value is enabled.
Fire damage and fire spread are separate controls. Disabling damage protects entities from taking fire damage; a Prevent rule for spread controls whether fire travels to other blocks. If you need both outcomes, configure the corresponding entries in their respective sections and test them independently.
Editing YAML without breaking EssentialsX
Indentation is part of the configuration
YAML uses indentation to define parent and child settings. Use spaces only—never tabs—and keep the indentation pattern that EssentialsX generated. A value placed at the wrong level can be ignored, interpreted as a different setting, or cause an error when EssentialsX loads.
Change values, not structure
For a first configuration pass, do not rename sections, reorder the block, delete comments, or paste keys from an unrelated version. Find the existing entry, change its value, save, and test. If a setting is absent, consult documentation for the exact EssentialsX build instead of guessing its spelling.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
Use a code-aware editor
Editors such as Notepad++ and Visual Studio Code make indentation visible and avoid the smart quotes and formatting substitutions common in word processors. Save the file as plain text and preserve the .yml extension.
Keep a rollback copy
Before each group of changes, copy config.yml to a dated backup. If the server reports a YAML or Essentials loading error, stop the server, restore the last known-good copy, and start again. Reapply changes one at a time after the server loads normally.
Applying configuration changes
- Save the file. Confirm that the editor wrote to
plugins/Essentials/config.yml, not a downloaded copy or a similarly named folder. - Try the EssentialsX reload command. From the console or an authorized in-game account, run
/essentials reload. Use the exact command spelling shown by your EssentialsX build. - Read the console. Look for a successful reload message or a YAML/configuration error. A clean command response does not prove that every setting was reapplied.
- Restart if needed. The guides warn that reload may not apply every change. Perform a full server restart when the behavior does not change, when the console reports a problem, or whenever you have installed or replaced a jar.
Avoid repeated reloads while troubleshooting. Each reload can leave other plugins in an uncertain state, whereas a clean restart gives all modules a consistent initialization order.
How to verify a change
Use a controlled test
- Test one setting at a time.
- Use a disposable world, protected test area, or recent backup.
- Record the original behavior, the value changed, and the result after reload or restart.
- Test with a non-operator account when the setting affects ordinary players.
Match the test to the section
| Setting area | Test action | Expected observation to record |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent: creeper damage | Trigger a creeper explosion near replaceable blocks. | Whether the explosion occurs and whether blocks are destroyed. |
| Prevent: fire spread | Light fire beside flammable blocks. | Whether adjacent blocks catch fire. |
| Spawn: spawn eggs | Use the relevant egg as a normal player. | Whether the entity can be created and whether a denial message appears. |
Disable: firedmg |
Expose a test player to fire briefly in a safe area. | Whether the player loses health from fire. |
Do not infer one result from another. For example, a player taking no fire damage does not prove that fire cannot spread, and an intact block after a creeper test does not prove that every other explosion type is prevented.

The Protect section is missing
Confirm that the EssentialsX core and Protect jar are both in plugins/, then stop and restart the server. If the section still does not appear, inspect the startup log for a failed module load and verify that the jars are intended to work together. Do not create a new block from memory when the installed build has not generated one.
EssentialsX reports a YAML error
Stop the server and restore your backup. Check for tabs, inconsistent spaces, a missing colon, or a value accidentally placed outside its parent section. Reopen the file in a code-aware editor and make one small edit before restarting.

The command succeeds but behavior is unchanged
Run a full server restart. A reload can leave some settings unapplied, and the guides specifically recommend restarting when a reload does not take effect. Then repeat a controlled test rather than changing several values at once.
A setting works for an operator but not for another player
Repeat the test with the affected account and note whether the event is permission-controlled or generated by another plugin. Protect’s global rule may not be the component deciding that particular outcome.

Fire still behaves unexpectedly
Separate the symptoms: fire spreading to blocks points to Prevent, while an entity losing health points to Disable and firedmg. Test each behavior independently after a restart and check the console for configuration errors.
Protect versus region protection
Protect provides server-wide controls; it does not define protected regions, ownership, flags, or separate rules for individual locations. If a server needs one rule in a spawn area and a different rule in a survival area, use a dedicated region-protection plugin such as WorldGuard for those boundaries, while retaining Protect for the global behavior it is suited to manage.
This division prevents a common configuration mistake: trying to make a global Prevent or Disable value behave like a per-region flag. Choose Protect when the rule should apply broadly, and use region tooling when location-specific behavior is the requirement.
Maintenance and safe changes over time
- Back up
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlbefore upgrading EssentialsX or changing several Protect values. - After an upgrade, search for
protect:again instead of relying on an old line number. - Compare the newly generated comments and keys with your backup; do not blindly replace a new configuration with an old one.
- Keep a short change log containing the date, setting changed, reload or restart used, and test result.
- When asking for support, include the EssentialsX build, server software and version, the relevant configuration block, and the console error with secrets removed.
A practical decision guide
- If the problem is environmental damage such as creeper block destruction or fire propagation, start in
prevent:. - If the problem is an unwanted mob-creation route, inspect
spawn:, especially the spawn-egg control described by the guides. - If the problem is a mechanic that should not affect entities, inspect
disable:, includingfiredmgfor fire damage. - If the rule must differ by location, do not force Protect to do it; configure a region-protection system.
- If a change fails, validate YAML, reload once, and perform a full restart before changing additional settings.
With that workflow, EssentialsX Protect remains predictable: install it alongside EssentialsX, edit the generated protect: block without changing its structure, apply changes with a reload or—preferably when in doubt—a restart, and verify each event in a controlled test.
