esshared.dll is a legitimate Microsoft file historically associated with COM+ EventSystem Shared Utilities. If Windows or an older application says esshared.dll is missing, do not download a replacement DLL from a random file site first.
The safest repair depends on whether the error comes from Windows itself, an old application, a game, or an obsolete startup entry. Follow the fixes below in order.

What esshared.dll is
esshared.dll is associated with Microsoft COM Services and the COM+ Event System. COM+ provides infrastructure for software components to communicate, while the Event System manages event publishers, subscribers, and subscriptions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Historical Windows component records identify esshared.dll as a legacy 32-bit Win32 DLL. It appeared with older COM+ components associated with Windows 9x, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and related-era software. That history matters because the file should not automatically be assumed to be a normal component of every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.

Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
Microsoft’s current COM+ documentation explains the technology, but Microsoft does not provide a verified current standalone download page for esshared.dll. Modern Windows may also show this error because an old application, installer, service, or startup entry still expects a legacy file.
Common messages include:
- “This application failed to start because esshared.dll was not found.”
- “The file esshared.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “Error loading esshared.dll.”
- “Failed to load esshared.dll.”
- “The program can’t start because esshared.dll is missing from your computer.”
The wording alone does not identify who owns the file. First identify the program and path involved.
Before repairing: identify what is requesting the file
1. Read the complete error dialog
Note the executable named in the message. It may identify an old application, game launcher, installer, service, or utility.
If the dialog appears immediately after signing in, it may be caused by an obsolete startup entry rather than an active Windows component.
2. Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log in the right pane.
- Look around the time of the failure for an error naming the application or service.
Also check Windows Logs > System if the message appears during startup or when a Windows service begins.
3. Check the application’s installation folder
If the error names a program, open its installation folder and look for its executable. Do not copy esshared.dll into that folder yet. The purpose of this check is to determine whether the program is old and whether its installer or repair option is still available.
Write down:
- The application or game name
- The executable path
- Your Windows version and build
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only when opening the program
- Whether the problem began after an update, uninstall, antivirus detection, or hardware change
This information determines whether the next fix should target the application or Windows.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution when only one old application reports the error. The application may have been incompletely installed, upgraded, or removed, or it may have expected a private copy of a legacy component.
Use Windows’ repair option
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
Not every program provides a Repair button. If the repair completes, restart Windows and open the application again.
Use the application’s own installer
If Windows does not show a repair option:
- Find the original installer for the affected program.
- Run it as an administrator.
- Select Repair, Modify, or Reinstall if offered.
- Keep the existing installation when the installer provides that choice.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
If the program is a game or launcher, use its built-in Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function before reinstalling the entire game. A game-specific repair is preferable to manually adding a system DLL.
When reinstalling is the correct fix
Uninstall and reinstall the program if:
- Its installer reports missing files.
- The repair option fails.
- The program was partially removed.
- The error began after an interrupted upgrade.
- The error appears only when that program starts.
Use the developer’s original installer or a trusted installation medium. Do not use a DLL download page as a substitute for the application installer.
The historical association between esshared.dll and an Exchange-era installation does not mean Microsoft Exchange universally owns the file. If the error occurs on an old server product, repair that exact Microsoft product using its original setup media and supported service materials.
Fix 2: Install Windows updates
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus restart time
Updates can repair or replace protected Windows components, but do not assume Windows Update will restore this particular legacy file on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Test the affected application after the restart. If Windows reports that it is fully updated but the same program still fails, continue with the system repair commands below.
Fix 3: Run DISM and System File Checker
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this step when the message appears during Windows activity, affects more than one program, or began after an interrupted update, disk problem, or suspected system corruption.
Microsoft’s supported order is DISM first, followed by SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause. DISM may take time to complete.
Run SFC
When DISM finishes, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
Restart Windows when both commands are complete, then test the program or service that produced the error.

How to interpret the result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected system-file corruption. This does not prove that
esshared.dllbelongs on your current Windows release or that the application’s private files are intact. - Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, use a matching Windows repair source or investigate the application separately.
- DISM reports that the source files could not be found: Use a matching Windows installation source with an administrator-provided repair path.
For an alternate repair source, Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid repair source that matches the installed Windows edition and build. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary folder downloaded from the internet.
While you are manually checking system files, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies; the repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing the specific application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the missing dependency.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a file, although no esshared.dll-specific false-positive case is established here. Check the history before restoring anything.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security on Windows 11, or Update & Security on Windows 10.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand a detection to see its name, path, and action.
Do not restore a file simply because its filename matches the error. Confirm that it came from the expected Windows or application installation and that the original file is legitimate.
If the item is clearly a false detection and the file came from an original signed installer, follow Microsoft Defender’s restoration and allow guidance. If the source is unknown, leave it quarantined and reinstall the owning application or Windows component instead.
After a restore, run a full security scan and test the program. If Defender immediately detects the file again, do not repeatedly restore it. Investigate the file’s signature, source, and location.
Fix 5: Reinstall the old application from original media
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
This applies when the error belongs to software from the Windows 2000 or Windows XP era, an old server component, or a discontinued program.

- Uninstall the damaged application from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer from trusted installation media.
- Apply the application’s matching service pack or update if one is part of the organization’s approved software source.
- Restart and test the application.
On an obsolete Windows installation, the matching original Windows media, service pack, hotfix, or in-place repair installation may be required. Do not use a modern 64-bit DLL as a replacement for a historical 32-bit component.
If the software cannot run on modern Windows, use its supported compatibility or virtualization arrangement rather than forcing an unknown DLL into System32.
Fix 6: Check architecture and file location
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Historical evidence identifies esshared.dll as a 32-bit Win32 file. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit applications, so the fact that Windows itself is 64-bit does not mean that the missing dependency should be a 64-bit DLL.

Check these points:
- Is the requesting program 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is the file expected in the application folder or a Windows system folder?
- Does the application installer contain the file?
- Does the original file have a Microsoft digital signature?
- Does the file version match the application or Windows package?
- Is the path in the error different from the path where you expected the file?
Do not assume that C:WindowsSystem32esshared.dll should exist on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Historical installations used legacy system locations, including paths under C:WindowsSystem, but those paths do not establish where a current installation should place the file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNever copy a file from another computer merely because the filename matches. It may have the wrong architecture, version, exports, signature, or ownership.
Fix 7: Check Windows Features only when the application requires them
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
COM+ is part of Windows component infrastructure, but enabling random Windows Features is not a general repair for a missing DLL.
If the affected program’s documentation specifically requires a Windows feature:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features.
- Enable only the feature required by the application.
- Select OK.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable legacy features just because the error mentions COM+. Modern Windows does not provide a verified promise that enabling an optional feature will restore this historical file.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Update a driver only if the evidence points to a driver problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A missing COM+ DLL is not normally a graphics, audio, printer, or chipset driver problem. Use Device Manager only if the error began after a hardware change or if Event Viewer identifies a device-related failure.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also select Properties > Driver to review the provider, date, and version. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, select Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers its free scan identifies; the driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and updating a driver will not replace an application-owned esshared.dll unless the evidence actually connects the failure to that device software.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download a missing file, repair corrupted Windows components, or recreate an application installation.
Running:
regsvr32 esshared.dll
is normally inappropriate for this error. If the file is absent, the command cannot load it. If the file exists but does not export the required registration entry point, Windows may return an entry-point or registration error. That result does not prove that the file is malicious or that the system needs a different DLL.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor or Microsoft specifically instructs you to register that particular DLL and provides the correct file and architecture.
Why downloading esshared.dll is risky
Avoid DLL download sites websites and manually copying esshared.dll into System32 or an application folder.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A downloaded file can have:
- The wrong version
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Modified exports
- An invalid or missing digital signature
- Malware
- The wrong installation path
- No relationship to the application that generated the error
Even a clean file may not fix the underlying problem. The application may also need a registry configuration, COM+ registration, related files, a service, or a complete installer repair.
Use these sources instead:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- Original Windows installation media
- The affected application’s original installer
- The application vendor’s supported repair package
- Microsoft Defender’s verified quarantine workflow
There is no verified current Microsoft standalone download page for esshared.dll.
Likely causes and the appropriate fix
| Likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Damaged legacy Windows component | Windows Update, then DISM and SFC |
| Incomplete application installation | Repair or reinstall that application |
| Old server or Exchange-era software | Repair the exact Microsoft product from original media |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection history and verify the original source |
| Wrong architecture or version | Match the application architecture and original package |
| Malware, disk failure, or interrupted update | Security scan, DISM/SFC, and System Restore where available |
| Obsolete startup entry | Identify and remove or repair the abandoned application |
| Visual C++ runtime error | Repair the specifically named VC runtime, not esshared.dll |
Why Visual C++ usually does not apply
esshared.dll is identified as a COM+ component, not as a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Installing Visual C++ will not normally restore it.
Visual C++ repair is relevant when the error names files such as:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
MSVCP*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dllapi-ms-win-crt-*.dll
If the application reports one of those files separately, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable package and match the application architecture. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package even when Windows is 64-bit.
If Windows still works normally
If Windows starts and most programs work, a missing esshared.dll message may come from an abandoned startup entry or an old application that was only partially removed.
Check the startup list:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries associated with the program named in the error.
- Right-click an entry and select Disable if it is clearly obsolete.
- Restart Windows.
Do not disable a Microsoft service or an unknown security component solely because its name looks unfamiliar. If you cannot identify the entry, record its publisher and file path first.
What to collect if the error remains
If the repair steps do not resolve the problem, record:
- The exact error wording
- Windows edition and build
- The executable path shown by the error
- The path where Windows says
esshared.dllis missing - Whether the error appears at startup or only inside one application
- Event Viewer details
- Recent application, Windows, or driver changes
- Microsoft Defender Protection history
- DISM and SFC results
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit
This information can reveal whether esshared.dll is genuinely missing or whether another DLL is failing to load a dependency.
FAQ
Is esshared.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a historically documented Microsoft DLL described as COM+ EventSystem Shared Utilities and associated with COM Services.
Is esshared.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
That is not verified as a universal current Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. Current Microsoft documentation covers COM+, but does not publish a current esshared.dll file manifest or standalone download.
Should I copy esshared.dll into System32?
No. First identify the requesting application and restore the file from the original Windows or application installation source.
Is esshared.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The strongest historical file evidence identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. Do not trust conflicting “x64” labels from download pages.
Will regsvr32 fix the error?
Normally no. Registration does not restore a missing file or repair the package that owns it.
Will installing Visual C++ fix esshared.dll?
Usually not. esshared.dll is associated with COM+ rather than the Visual C++ runtime.
Could antivirus have deleted it?
It is possible, but the specific cause must be confirmed in Protection history. Restore only a verified original file. Otherwise repair or reinstall the owning component.
