Its puzzles are optional for much of the story, so you can choose a more direct story-exploration path—but the game is at its best when you are willing to investigate, take notes, and tolerate some backtracking.
What kind of game is Ether One?
Released in 2014, Ether One is a first-person graphic adventure developed and published by White Paper Games. Its fictional premise places you in a world reconstructed from a client’s memories as part of a memory-restoration process. That is the game’s story device, not a real treatment or scientific account of dementia.

Rather than centering on combat, the game asks you to explore places such as a harbor-side village, mines, and factories. The environments are deliberately lonely, and much of the narrative is conveyed through places and discoveries instead of a straightforward sequence of explanations. RPGFan’s Andrew Barker compared its approach to older adventures such as Myst, while praising the balance between exploration and puzzles.
How do exploration and puzzles work?
In each location, you search for red ribbons that unlock a core memory, then photograph notable objects connected to the client’s past. Environmental puzzles give you reasons to inspect rooms, find clues, and understand how objects or mechanisms fit together. One example described by RPGFan involves a furnace, switches, a chemical, and timing a mechanism using a nearby clock.

#1 Best Overall
Many puzzles are optional. The story-exploration path lets players avoid puzzles rather than requiring them to solve every challenge. That makes the game more approachable if you mainly want to follow the narrative, though skipping most puzzles also means missing a substantial part of the intended exploration.
The Case, inventory, and travel
The Case is both an in-world hub and an archive for your discoveries. You can carry one item at a time; other items and notes are stored in the Case. Fast travel is available to locations you have already visited, but some puzzle sequences still send you back to the hub. GameGrin found those repeated trips tiring in places, even with quick transitions.

When a notebook helps
Some clues are easier to manage when you record them. Barker reported writing down combinations and drawing diagrams while playing. A small notebook can be useful for that, but it is optional: the game does not require a particular accessory, and the Case also stores discovered notes.
Is Ether One worth playing?
It is a good fit if you value evocative environments, patient exploration, and puzzles that ask you to connect clues to machinery and surroundings. It is less suited to players who want a plainly explained story or who dislike revisiting a hub to manage objects. RPGFan praised the environments, exploration, and puzzle design, but criticized the fragmented storytelling and subdued music. GameGrin’s backtracking complaint is another useful caveat, rather than proof that every player will find the pacing frustrating.

RPGFan’s Windows review, published April 11, 2014, gave the game an overall score of 83. That is one outlet’s historical review score, not a current user-rating average. Barker summarized the appeal as a balance between classic puzzle-and-exploration design and a more modern, accessible presentation.
How long is Ether One?
Playtime depends heavily on how many puzzles you take on. Barker estimated that a player who skipped most puzzles could finish in less than five hours. That is one reviewer’s estimate for that specific play style, not a guaranteed completion time or a general statistic for all players. Solving more optional puzzles will naturally extend the experience.
