Ethernet is usually the better choice for lower, steadier latency between your gaming device and your home router. It avoids wireless signal problems and shared-channel interference on that part of the connection. But it cannot guarantee lower ping to a game server: the server’s location, your internet provider’s route, and other network conditions also affect the result. If Wi-Fi causes ping spikes or connection instability, trying Ethernet is a sensible first step.
What Ethernet can—and cannot—change about ping
When you play online, data travels from your gaming device through your home network and internet provider to the game server, then back again. Ethernet and Wi-Fi are two ways for your device to reach your router. Changing between them changes the local connection; it does not control every leg of the journey to the server.

That distinction matters because the ping shown in a game generally reflects the wider trip, not just the device-to-router link. A more consistent local connection can reduce one possible source of delay or fluctuation, but it cannot promise a specific in-game ping. If the remaining delay comes from the route beyond your home, the game server, or another network condition, plugging in may not make the displayed number meaningfully lower.
HP’s online gaming guidance says a wired Ethernet connection delivers lower, more consistent latency than Wi-Fi by avoiding wireless interference and network congestion. RTINGS likewise describes Ethernet as consistently lower and more stable than Wi-Fi in its comparison. Those findings support Ethernet as the more predictable local link; they do not establish a universal number of milliseconds every player will save.

It helps to separate two questions: “Is the connection from my device to my router stable?” and “Is the full route to this particular game server fast?” Ethernet directly addresses the first. It may help the second if Wi-Fi is contributing delay or instability, but it cannot determine the server’s distance, the route selected by your internet provider, or conditions elsewhere on the internet.
Latency is also not the same thing as download speed. A high speed-test result or fast broadband plan does not, by itself, show that a connection has steady latency during a match. When the complaint is lag, spikes, or interruptions, compare those symptoms directly rather than treating a download-speed number as the answer.
Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi for gaming
| Factor | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Local latency consistency | Usually the more predictable option because the device connects by cable rather than radio. | Can work well, but signal conditions and shared wireless use can contribute to variation. |
| Signal and interference | The device-to-router connection does not depend on wireless signal strength or channel conditions. | Distance, walls, nearby access points, Bluetooth, and other devices sharing the network or channel can matter. |
| Convenience | Requires a cable run to a compatible router or switch port; routing it neatly may take effort. | No cable run to the router is needed, which can be more convenient when the router is far away. |
| When it is a useful choice | When Wi-Fi has spikes, packet loss, or unstable play, or when you want to test whether the wireless segment is a problem. | When the signal and local conditions are good and a wired run is impractical. HP says Wi-Fi is usually adequate for casual gaming, particularly with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E routers. |
Neither option guarantees a particular server ping. A well-functioning Wi-Fi connection may be perfectly usable, while a cable cannot repair a problem elsewhere on the route.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The practical choice is therefore not simply “wired is always good, wireless is always bad.” Ethernet removes the wireless portion of the local link and is a useful way to test whether that portion is causing trouble. Wi-Fi preserves convenience and can be adequate when the signal and local conditions are good. Your room layout, router location, household network use, and symptoms matter more than a blanket rule.
How to tell whether Wi-Fi is the weak link
Look for a difference in consistency, not just a single ping reading. If play is smooth at some times and suddenly stutters or spikes at others, wireless signal conditions or shared network use are among the things worth checking. The likelihood of local Wi-Fi trouble is more plausible if the gaming device is far from the router, separated by obstructions, or competing with other devices for network or channel use.
A download-speed result alone does not answer the latency question. A connection can have a high headline download speed and still experience unstable delay. For gaming, pay attention to the in-game ping and whether it fluctuates during play; also notice whether the problem changes when other people or devices are using the network.

The most practical comparison is a controlled one: play under similar conditions first on Wi-Fi, then on Ethernet, and compare both the reported ping and how often it spikes or the game feels interrupted. If a direct wired connection is steadier, Wi-Fi is a likely contributor on the local segment. If the problem persists in much the same way, investigate beyond the wireless link rather than assuming the cable has failed.

Use the same gaming device and game, and compare sessions under broadly similar household network use. Note both the ping the game reports and the experience over time: whether it stays steady, suddenly jumps, or accompanies stuttering or interruptions. A single reading can be affected by conditions at that moment, so repeated observations are more useful than treating one number as decisive.
Packet loss is another symptom worth noticing. If the game reports packet loss or play is interrupted, that supports testing a wired connection, but it does not prove Wi-Fi is the cause. Ethernet is a practical way to remove the wireless segment from the comparison. If the symptoms remain on a direct cable, the cause may lie elsewhere.
Also compare the times when the problem occurs. If the connection seems worse when several devices are active, shared network use may be relevant. If Wi-Fi is consistently worse in a room farther from the router or behind obstructions, signal conditions are a reasonable thing to investigate. These are clues, not proof; the Ethernet comparison helps determine whether changing the local link makes a difference.
Try Ethernet with a straightforward setup
- Check the ports. Confirm that the gaming device and router—or a switch connected to the router—have Ethernet ports. If you want a gigabit link, the router port must support gigabit capability as well. A cable alone cannot make a port support a speed it does not offer.
- Choose a suitable cable. Cat 5e and Cat 6 are common consumer Ethernet cable types identified by Intel. Pick a length that reaches comfortably and can be routed without creating a trip hazard. A higher cable category or premium branding is not evidence that game-server ping will improve.
- Connect the device to the router or switch. Use a compatible Ethernet port on both ends. A direct connection makes it easier to assess the wired link without adding another wireless segment.
- Check that the device is using the wired connection. If it continues to use Wi-Fi, turn off Wi-Fi on the gaming device temporarily, if its settings allow, and verify that the wired connection is active.
- Compare play under similar conditions. Use the same game and, as far as practical, similar times and network use. Note whether ping is steadier and whether interruptions change; do not treat one isolated reading as a guaranteed result.
If Ethernet improves stability, keeping the wired setup is a reasonable choice even if the displayed average ping changes little. Consistency can matter more to play than a small difference in one reading.
For most people trying a wired connection, a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable is the direct, relevant purchase. Choose enough length to reach the router or switch without stretching it across a walkway, and confirm the ports at both ends are compatible. The useful feature is the wired connection, not a premium label. The cable category alone does not guarantee a lower ping to a remote server.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
There is no need to start by replacing a working router just to see whether Ethernet helps. A cable test is a simpler way to check whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem. RTINGS cautions that buying the newest gaming router alone is unlikely to fix ping, so make a change only when you have a reason to think the router or another part of the setup is involved.
If you stay on Wi-Fi
Start with the conditions between the device and router. Nexon identifies distance and obstructions, nearby access points, Bluetooth, and the number of devices using the same network or channel as possible interference or shared-use concerns. If practical, move the device closer to the router or reduce obstructions. Intel also recommends reducing the number of devices using the network while gaming so the connection has more available resources.
Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E does not make every setup problem disappear, but HP says Wi-Fi is usually adequate for casual gaming, especially with routers using those standards. The actual result still depends on signal and local conditions, so a standard name alone cannot tell you whether your particular connection is stable.
Recommended Free Tools
Think about the location of the gaming device as well as the router. A signal that is good near the router may not be as dependable at the place where you play, particularly when distance or obstructions intervene. Nearby access points and Bluetooth are among the local factors Nexon identifies as possible concerns. If a change in placement or fewer active devices coincides with steadier play, that can help identify a local condition worth addressing.
Reducing network use while gaming is a practical test, not a promise that every ping problem will disappear. Intel recommends reducing the number of devices using the network so the connection has more available resources. If the game improves when fewer devices are active, shared use may be part of the issue; if it does not, continue comparing the local link and the wider connection rather than assuming a single adjustment must work.
If a cable cannot reasonably reach the gaming area, HP lists powerline and MoCA adapters as alternatives that may provide a more stable connection than standard Wi-Fi. They depend on the home wiring and equipment, so treat them as options to evaluate in your setup, not guaranteed upgrades.

These adapters are alternatives to investigate when routing Ethernet is impractical, not a universal substitute with a guaranteed result. Their suitability depends on the home wiring and equipment. If considering one, judge it by whether it makes the connection more stable in your particular home, just as you would test a direct cable, rather than assuming the product category ensures better ping.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If ping spikes or interruptions continue after the device is connected directly by Ethernet, the wireless device-to-router link is less likely to be the only cause. The router, your internet provider’s route, or the game or server conditions may still be involved. The available comparison evidence does not establish a universal diagnosis procedure or a particular number of milliseconds to expect from changing connections, so use the wired test to narrow the possibilities rather than as proof of a specific fault.
- Stable on Ethernet, unstable on Wi-Fi: Focus on Wi-Fi signal, obstructions, nearby wireless activity, and shared network use.
- Unstable on both: Look beyond the local wireless link. A cable category change or a newly purchased gaming router is not a guaranteed fix; RTINGS cautions that buying the newest gaming router alone is unlikely to solve ping problems.
- High but steady ping: Ethernet may make the local link more predictable without changing the wider route to the game server. The server location and internet-provider path still matter.
If the cable test does not change what you experience, avoid treating that as a failure of Ethernet or proof that the cable is faulty. The test has still narrowed the question: Wi-Fi may not be the main source of the remaining problem. Consider the router, the route taken by your internet provider, or conditions involving the game or server. The facts here do not identify one universal next diagnostic step, so do not assume a different cable category or a new gaming router will solve it.
A high but steady ping is different from frequent spikes. If the connection is stable but the game consistently shows high latency, Ethernet may still make the local segment more predictable, yet the wider route and server location remain outside the cable’s control. If you see instability on both wired and wireless connections, the wired test suggests looking beyond Wi-Fi rather than buying increasingly expensive cables.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much lower will your ping be?
There is no broadly applicable, controlled figure established here for how many milliseconds every gamer saves by switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet. Reported ranges can differ, and without consistent testing context they should not be treated as a promise for your home, game, or internet connection. The meaningful result is the one you observe on your own setup: whether ping becomes steadier, spikes become less frequent, or gameplay improves when the local wireless connection is removed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat is why “Will Ethernet lower my ping?” has two honest answers. It usually gives the device a more consistent connection to the router, and that can help if wireless instability is part of the problem. But an individual player may see little change in the game’s displayed ping, particularly if the main delay lies beyond the home network. Ethernet is a sensible test and a predictable local connection, not a guarantee of a particular millisecond reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better for online gaming, Ethernet or Wi-Fi?
Ethernet is usually the more predictable choice for the local connection between your device and router, especially if Wi-Fi has spikes, packet loss, or instability. Wi-Fi can still be adequate for casual gaming when its signal and local conditions are good; HP notes this in particular for Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E routers.
Can Wi-Fi ever give me lower ping than Ethernet?
The comparison depends on your setup and the wider route to the game server. Ethernet is generally the more consistent local link, but it does not guarantee a lower in-game ping in every individual session. Compare both connections on your own setup under similar conditions, including whether ping fluctuates and play is interrupted.
How many milliseconds will Ethernet save?
There is no broadly applicable controlled figure that predicts how many milliseconds every player will save. The result depends on whether Wi-Fi is contributing to delay or instability and on conditions beyond the home connection. Look for steadier play and fewer spikes as well as any change in the displayed ping.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Will a faster internet plan or download speed lower gaming ping?
A high headline download speed alone does not establish that latency is low or stable. Ping reflects the trip to the game server, including the local connection and the wider route. Assess the in-game ping and whether it spikes rather than relying only on a download-speed result.
What Ethernet cable should I use for gaming?
Cat 5e and Cat 6 are common consumer cable types. Choose a suitable length, check that the gaming device and router or switch have compatible Ethernet ports, and make sure the router port supports gigabit if that is the link speed you want. Premium branding or a higher cable category does not automatically improve game-server ping.
What if I cannot run a cable to my gaming device?
Keep Wi-Fi if its signal and performance are good, and consider practical changes such as reducing obstructions or the number of devices using the network while gaming. HP also lists powerline and MoCA adapters as possible alternatives, but their results depend on the home wiring and equipment, so they are not guaranteed improvements.
Should I buy a gaming router to fix high ping?
Not as a first assumption. RTINGS cautions that buying the newest gaming router alone is unlikely to fix ping. First compare Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet connection if feasible. If the problem remains on Ethernet, the router, internet-provider route, or game and server conditions may still be involved.
The Bottom Line
For online gaming, Ethernet is usually the more consistent connection to your router, but it cannot promise lower ping to every game server. If Wi-Fi is unstable, try a compatible Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable and compare play under similar conditions. If the problem remains on Ethernet, look beyond Wi-Fi; if Wi-Fi is steady and convenient, there is no rule that you must switch.
