Road to the Black Sea is a map expansion for Euro Truck Simulator 2 that adds Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey’s European Trakya region, including Istanbul. It is a fit for players who want those routes and scenery, but it requires the Steam base game. Steam user reviews were Very Positive overall for English-language reviews and Mixed in the recent sample on October 8, 2026; those are player ratings, not critics’ scores.

What Road to the Black Sea adds

Released on December 5, 2019, by SCS Software, the add-on expands the game’s map into Romania, Bulgaria and the European part of Turkey, known as Trakya. Istanbul is its major urban destination. SCS describes a mix of dense cities, villages, countryside and Black Sea coastline, with routes through farms, logistics businesses, mining and steel industries. Steam’s product listing and the SCS Software factsheet describe the expansion’s scope and features.

The developer and storefront advertise more than 10,000 kilometers of roads, 20 major populated cities with garages, 22 companies and 11 local company docks and industries. Other advertised regional details include border crossings and controls, a Danube river ferry, Balkan architecture and landmarks, local vegetation, trains and trams, horse carts in Bulgarian and Romanian countryside, and regional achievements. These are feature claims from SCS and Steam, not independent assessments of how well each feature is implemented.

Do you need Euro Truck Simulator 2?

Yes. Steam states that the DLC requires the Euro Truck Simulator 2 base game on Steam. It is downloadable content, not a standalone game. Steam lists SCS Software as both developer and publisher. Check the Steam listing for the current purchase and compatibility details.

How are the Steam reviews?

Steam’s page showed a Very Positive rating for 678 English-language reviews, with 84% positive, when retrieved on October 8, 2026. The same page showed the last-30-days English sample as Mixed: 12 reviews, 66% positive. Steam separately reported 3,302 reviews across all languages as Very Positive, while its recent all-language sample was Mixed. These are changing Steam user-review aggregates, not professional critics’ scores or a fixed measure of quality. Review counts and percentages may have changed since retrieval.

No independent editorial review set or named critic assessment is established here, so there is no substantiated critics’ consensus to weigh against the Steam ratings. The aggregate figures alone also do not show which specific aspects players liked or disliked.

Is Road to the Black Sea worth it?

Consider it if you own the base game and specifically want to drive through Romania, Bulgaria, Istanbul and the European Turkish region. Its advertised breadth is appealing to players drawn to varied routes: border controls, a river ferry, cities and industrial destinations alongside countryside and coastal scenery. If those locations or route types are not a priority, the map expansion’s size alone may not make it a useful purchase for you.

Steam’s listing showed a price of $17.99 when retrieved, but storefront prices can change; check the live listing before buying. The practical value depends on how much you want the added region at the price currently offered, rather than on the volatile review percentages alone.
