Yes—your PC can run Euro Truck Simulator 2 if it meets the requirement tier for its operating system. The current Steam listing sets a Windows floor of a 64-bit Windows 10 system with an i5-6400/Ryzen 3 1200-class processor, 8 GB of memory, a 2 GB-VRAM GTX 660/RX 460/Intel HD 630-class GPU, and 25 GB of free storage. Its recommended Windows tier raises the processor to an i5-9600/Ryzen 5 3600 class and memory to 12 GB, with a GTX 1660/RX 590-class GPU. macOS and SteamOS/Linux have separate requirement blocks, so use the row that matches your platform.

These are published compatibility specifications, not performance promises. Neither Steam nor the official support pages states a guaranteed frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, mod capacity, or DLC storage allowance. Compare your complete system with the table below, then adjust expectations for the way you intend to play.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 requirements at a glance

The figures below come from Steam’s current Euro Truck Simulator 2 listing, accessed October 15, 2026: Steam system requirements. “Similar” means a processor or graphics adapter in the same general performance class; it is not a guarantee that every model with a similar name will perform identically.

Platform Minimum Recommended
Windows Windows 10 64-bit; Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or similar; 8 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660, AMD Radeon RX 460, or Intel HD 630, with 2 GB VRAM; 25 GB free space Windows 10 64-bit; Intel Core i5-9600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or similar; 12 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 590, with 2 GB VRAM; 25 GB free space
macOS macOS 11 (Big Sur); quad-core 3.3 GHz CPU; 8 GB RAM; Intel HD 630 or similar, with 2 GB VRAM; 25 GB free space macOS 11 (Big Sur); quad-core 4.6 GHz CPU; 12 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or similar, with 2 GB VRAM; 25 GB free space
SteamOS/Linux Ubuntu 12.04; quad-core 3.3 GHz CPU; 8 GB RAM; Intel HD 630 or similar, with 2 GB VRAM; 25 GB free space; recent binary ATI or NVIDIA drivers (MESA may not work reliably) Ubuntu 12.04; quad-core 4.6 GHz CPU; 12 GB RAM; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or similar, with 2 GB VRAM; 25 GB free space; recent binary ATI or NVIDIA drivers (MESA may not work reliably)

The 25 GB figure is the listed available space for the base game. Keep additional free space for operating-system updates, shader caches, save files and any downloadable content or mods you plan to install; the listing does not quantify those additions.

What the Windows minimum actually tells you

Operating system

The Windows block names 64-bit Windows 10. A 32-bit installation does not match that published requirement. The listing does not provide a separate Windows 11 specification, so treat Windows 10 64-bit as the documented baseline and check current Steam compatibility if you are using a different edition or an unusual installation.

Processor

An Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 is the reference class for starting from the minimum tier. The game’s simulation continually tracks traffic, vehicles, weather and the world, so processor performance can affect busy-city scenes and frame-time consistency even when the graphics adapter is adequate. A processor that is newer but an ultra-low-power or heavily throttled model should be compared by actual performance, not by its model number alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory

Eight gigabytes of system RAM is the published floor. That is the total memory available to the game and the operating system, not a dedicated allocation. If Windows, a browser, recording software or a large mod list consumes most of it, the game can encounter paging and stutter before the GPU is fully loaded. Closing unnecessary programs is a useful test, but it does not turn a memory-constrained machine into a recommended-tier system.

Graphics adapter and VRAM

The minimum examples are a GeForce GTX 660, Radeon RX 460 or Intel HD 630 class adapter with 2 GB of VRAM. Integrated graphics share system memory, so the amount reported by the driver may not correspond to 2 GB of physically dedicated video memory. Check the adapter model and its available graphics memory in your operating system rather than relying on a generic “Intel graphics” label.

What the Windows recommended tier changes

The recommended row moves to an i5-9600 or Ryzen 5 3600-class processor and 12 GB of RAM, while naming a GTX 1660 or RX 590-class graphics adapter with 2 GB of VRAM. This is a stronger starting point for higher settings and heavier scenes, but it still is not an FPS or resolution guarantee. Your monitor’s resolution, selected scaling, traffic density, background applications, DLC and mods all change the workload.

Notice that the listed recommended examples still specify 2 GB of VRAM. More VRAM can be useful for high-resolution textures or large mod collections, but the official table does not define a target amount beyond the examples shown. Do not interpret “recommended” as a promise that every visual option will run smoothly at any resolution.

macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements

macOS

Steam lists macOS 11 (Big Sur), a quad-core 3.3 GHz CPU, 8 GB of RAM, an Intel HD 630-class GPU with 2 GB of VRAM and 25 GB of free space for the minimum tier. Its recommended block keeps macOS 11 and 25 GB but raises the processor reference to a quad-core 4.6 GHz part, memory to 12 GB and graphics to a GTX 1660-class adapter with 2 GB of VRAM.

Apple hardware varies considerably by model and graphics architecture. Compare the Mac’s exact CPU, memory configuration and graphics device with the row rather than assuming that every Mac capable of installing macOS 11 has equivalent game performance. The Steam block is the authoritative compatibility reference for the store version.

SteamOS and Linux

The Linux block names Ubuntu 12.04, a quad-core 3.3 GHz CPU, 8 GB of RAM, an Intel HD 630-class adapter with 2 GB of VRAM and 25 GB of free space at minimum. The recommended row raises the processor to a quad-core 4.6 GHz class and memory to 12 GB, with a GTX 1660-class GPU.

Driver wording matters here: Steam specifies recent binary ATI or NVIDIA drivers and warns that MESA may not work reliably. Ubuntu 12.04 is the version written in the listing, not a suggestion to install an obsolete distribution. If you use another distribution, a compatibility layer or a handheld-focused SteamOS build, verify the current runtime, driver support and game-specific reports for that environment.

Minimum versus recommended: how to set expectations

Minimum is a starting floor

Meeting every minimum item means your configuration matches the publisher’s stated entry point. It does not establish a playable frame rate at a particular resolution, nor does it promise that every graphics option, map expansion or mod will fit comfortably in memory. A machine can pass the minimum check and still need reduced settings or a lower resolution.

Recommended is not a benchmark

The recommended row is a practical target for a stronger configuration, not an independent test result. Official pages do not publish FPS measurements, frame-time charts or tested presets. Treat any exact FPS claim found elsewhere as a separate test with its own hardware, drivers and settings rather than as a guarantee attached to these requirements.

Workloads that change the result

  • Resolution and scaling: Rendering at 1440p or 4K requires more GPU work than 1080p.
  • Graphics settings: Shadows, mirrors, reflections and anti-aliasing can affect the graphics load differently from one preset to another.
  • Traffic and scenery: Dense cities and busy junctions can place more demand on the CPU than an open motorway.
  • DLC and mods: Additional map assets, high-resolution textures and scripts may increase storage, memory and loading demands; the official requirement table gives no universal limit.
  • Background software: Browsers, capture tools, overlays and security scans consume CPU, RAM or disk bandwidth while you play.

How to check whether your PC matches

Windows 10 or 11

  1. Open Settings > System > About and confirm that the system type is 64-bit. Record the processor model and installed RAM.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and inspect the CPU, Memory and GPU entries. Note the exact GPU model and dedicated video memory; shared memory is shown separately.
  3. Open File Explorer > This PC and check the free space on the drive where Steam will install the game. Leave headroom beyond the listed 25 GB if you intend to add content.
  4. Compare each item with the Windows row, not just the GPU. A fast graphics card cannot compensate for insufficient RAM or an unsupported operating-system architecture.

macOS

  1. Choose Apple menu > About This Mac (or System Settings > General > About on newer layouts) and record the macOS version, chip or processor, memory and graphics information shown.
  2. In System Settings > General > Storage, verify available space on the intended drive.
  3. Match the exact details to Steam’s macOS minimum or recommended block. If a field is not reported in the same form—for example, shared graphics memory—look up the Mac model’s hardware specification before treating it as equivalent.

Linux

  1. Run lscpu for the CPU model and core count, free -h for system memory, and df -h to check free disk space.
  2. Use lspci | grep -E "VGA|3D|Display" to identify the graphics adapter. Check your distribution’s driver utility to confirm that a recent binary ATI or NVIDIA driver is active.
  3. Compare the distribution, driver stack and hardware with Steam’s Linux row. If you are using MESA, remember Steam’s explicit warning that it may not work reliably for this listing.

Comparison area Questions to ask
Operating system Does the installed 64-bit Windows, macOS or Linux environment match the platform block?
CPU Is the processor in the same class as the minimum or recommended reference, and can it sustain its rated speed?
GPU and VRAM Is the adapter comparable to the named examples, and is the memory dedicated or shared?
System RAM Does the machine have 8 GB, 12 GB or more, with enough left for the operating system and your usual background apps?
Storage Is at least the listed 25 GB free on the installation drive, with room for updates, DLC and mods?

After that baseline comparison, define your actual target: monitor resolution, desired frame-rate consistency, graphics preset, number of map expansions and mod style. Because the official requirements do not tie hardware tiers to those targets, no table can honestly guarantee an outcome without a controlled test of your exact configuration.

What to upgrade when a PC falls short

Insufficient RAM

Moving from 8 GB toward the 12 GB recommended figure can reduce pressure from the operating system and content-heavy sessions. Check whether your motherboard and laptop allow a memory upgrade and whether modules must be installed as a matched kit. More RAM cannot fix a graphics adapter that lacks the required capability.

Weak or incompatible graphics

A GPU below the minimum examples is the most direct graphics limitation. A discrete adapter with adequate VRAM may be a practical upgrade, but confirm power-supply capacity, case clearance, cooling and driver support before buying. Integrated graphics should be evaluated by its exact model and shared-memory behavior, not by the CPU brand.

Older processor

If the game runs but slows in cities or during heavy traffic, processor performance may be the constraint. A CPU upgrade can require a new motherboard and memory, so compare the total platform cost with replacing the system. The published requirements do not identify a single component as the bottleneck in every scene.

Low free space

Free at least the listed 25 GB on the installation drive. If the drive is nearly full, move unrelated files or install to a larger drive before troubleshooting graphics; an interrupted update or insufficient working space can look like a game problem.

Purchase and troubleshooting through official channels

SCS Software’s official download page directs buyers to obtain a Steam key for the full version: Euro Truck Simulator 2 download. Use the Steam listing for the platform-specific requirements and installation details.

If the game fails to start or displays rendering problems, SCS support first directs players to check the minimum requirements and then try the available OpenGL and DirectX launch options. Follow the current instructions on SCS Software support. Before changing settings, record your operating system, CPU, GPU, driver version and installed mods so you can identify which change resolved the issue.

Bottom line

Use the platform row—not a generic PC checklist—to decide whether Euro Truck Simulator 2 is a sensible install. The minimum tier is the documented entry point; the recommended tier is a stronger starting configuration, not an FPS promise. Check the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, operating system, driver stack and available storage, then account for your resolution, DLC and mods before buying upgrades.
