Your first session: a low-risk learning route
ETS2 is both a driving simulator and a company-management game. Trying to optimize a fleet before you can place a trailer at a depot usually creates expensive mistakes. Use the first few hours to build a repeatable delivery routine.

- Create a profile and open Controls. Bind only the inputs you will use every few minutes. You can refine the layout after you know which functions you actually need.
- Accept several Quick Jobs. Choose short, straightforward routes with familiar-looking destinations. Read the cargo, delivery deadline and route length before accepting.
- Use every trip as a drill. Practice wide turns, early braking, lane discipline, fuel stops, rest prompts and the final parking approach rather than chasing the largest payment.
- Preview the route. Check the Route Advisor and map before leaving, especially around junctions and the entrance to the destination city or depot.
- Park with assistance at first. The assisted option lets you learn trailer geometry and camera movement. Switch to manual parking when you are comfortable for extra experience.
- Save before an unfamiliar maneuver. ETS2 saves frequently, but a manual save before a difficult reverse or expensive decision gives you a clean recovery point.
Keep the first routes forgiving. A short delivery with a simple trailer teaches more than a long, high-value run that combines an unfamiliar city, a tight depot and a difficult cargo type.
Which controls to learn first
Keyboard, gamepad and steering-wheel inputs are supported, and a wheel is not required to start. The important thing is a layout you can operate without looking away from the road.

Core controls
- Steering: Use a comfortable pair of keys, an analog stick or wheel axis. Smooth inputs are more useful than maximum steering speed.
- Throttle and brake: Know which input applies service brakes and which releases them. With a keyboard, make small taps rather than holding a key through every corner.
- Indicators: Signal before lane changes, roundabouts and turns. Make signaling a habit while traffic is light.
- Headlights: Bind the light control where you can reach it quickly when weather or time of day changes.
- Cruise control: Set it on open roads, then cancel it before junctions, exits or changing traffic conditions.
- Route Advisor and camera: Bind a key for the Route Advisor and a camera reset. The display carries navigation, fuel, damage, rest and deadline information.
- Wipers: Weather can reduce visibility; a nearby wiper control prevents a search through menus.
- Parking and trailer controls: Learn the command for trailer attachment and the parking selection before your first owned-truck job.
Add these after the basic loop feels natural
Retarder and engine-brake controls help control speed on descents without overheating the service brakes. Mirror views, additional camera positions and trailer-function bindings become increasingly useful in tight depots. Add them once steering, braking, signaling and navigation no longer require conscious effort. Version 1.58 also includes a Driving Academy and management-screen improvements, while a planned Multi-Function Display is intended to make ETS2’s large control set easier to manage. That display is an update feature, not a requirement for beginning the game.
Driving Academy: structured practice in version 1.58
SCS Software’s 1.58 release on 12 February 2026 added a current Driving Academy that is particularly useful when free driving feels unfocused. Work through its guided scenarios before accepting cargo that exceeds your confidence.
Forward driving
Use the forward-driving exercises to practice lane position, speed control and braking points without the financial pressure of a career delivery. Brake earlier than instinct suggests, especially on a downhill section or with a heavy trailer.
Manoeuvring
Manoeuvring tasks teach the relationship between the tractor’s steering angle and the trailer’s path. Slow inputs give you time to watch the trailer in the mirrors; a sharp correction often creates a second problem on the opposite side.
Double-trailer reversing
The Academy explicitly guides forward driving, manoeuvring and reversing with double trailers. Attempt this module after you can place a single trailer consistently. Treat it as a geometry lesson, not a money-making activity: stop, pull forward to straighten and restart the reverse rather than forcing a blind angle.
Quick Jobs, Company Jobs and Freight Market
The job screens serve different stages of a beginner’s career. The Euro Truck Simulator 2 manual describes the low-responsibility starting point directly: “The quick ones don’t pay much, but your employer provides for everything.” Company Jobs pay better, but the player must own a truck and cover operating costs. Freight Market is the planning interface for choosing work for that truck.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Truck ownership | Who covers operating responsibility | Best beginner use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Job | Not required; a truck is supplied | The employer supplies the loaded truck and handles the employer-side responsibilities, including the normal fuel and repair burden | Learn controls, roads, loading, deadlines and parking with limited financial exposure |
| Company Job | Required | You provide the truck and pay for fuel and repairs | Earn better rates once your first truck and cash reserve are stable |
| Freight Market | Required | You operate your own truck and select the planned load | Compare offers, route length, cargo and return positioning before committing |
A displayed payout is revenue, not automatically profit. Fuel, repairs, loan commitments and an empty repositioning trip can reduce the amount left over. The manual notes that cargo can be taken at a depot, but planning through Freight Market helps you find better deals around your current position.
How to choose a beginner-friendly delivery
Read the offer before accepting
- Check the deadline and expected arrival time. A generous payout is useless if the route leaves no margin for rest, fuel or mistakes.
- Look at cargo weight and trailer type. Heavy or unusually long combinations increase braking distance and turning difficulty.
- Consider the destination entrance, not just the city name. A tight industrial depot can be harder than a longer route to an open yard.
- Account for where the delivery leaves you. A job that ends far from available work may require an unpaid repositioning drive.
Plan the first minutes of the route
Before pulling out, identify the first junction, fuel opportunity and likely rest location on the map. Slow before junctions rather than braking halfway through a turn. Leave extra space for the trailer to cut across the inside of a corner, and check mirrors before moving lanes.
Use a calm recovery procedure
If you miss a turn or damage the truck, do not make a series of hurried corrections. Pull over safely, inspect the Route Advisor, then refuel or repair if necessary. Recalculate the route and continue. A late, completed delivery teaches more than an abandoned one caused by panic.
Money management before buying your first truck
Your first truck changes the game from borrowed equipment to personal operating responsibility. Buy only when your income is predictable enough to absorb a bad trip.
Keep a reserve
Set aside money for fuel, routine repairs and any loan commitment before spending on paint, accessories or rapid expansion. A thin balance can turn one collision or missed fuel stop into a debt problem. Cosmetic upgrades provide no protection against an empty tank or repair bill.

Choose dependable capacity
For a first truck, prioritize a configuration you can control confidently and a purchase that leaves cash in reserve. More power or expensive components may be attractive, but they do not replace good braking, mirror checks and route planning. Compare the truck’s purchase cost with the money you will still have for operating it, not with the headline job payout.
Know what changes after ownership
Company Jobs and Freight Market work expose you to fuel and repairs. You also become responsible for reaching the depot with your own equipment. Include those costs, interest on any loan and the possibility of an empty return in every financial decision.
Skills: spend points around the jobs you actually play
Skills unlock more job categories and longer routes. There is no universal best order because the right sequence depends on whether you enjoy short regional work, long-distance driving or specialized cargo.
A practical progression method
- Start with the skill that supports the job type you already enjoy and can complete reliably.
- Add distance-oriented or cargo-specialization skills after your braking, parking and fuel routine is stable.
- Choose upgrades that make the next set of offers more interesting, not merely the ones with the largest theoretical payout.
- Review your available jobs after each skill investment so you can see which new categories have opened.
These are player-facing recommendations, not a developer-mandated build. Skills should expand your options without pushing you into loads or routes that exceed your current control practice.
Growing from one truck to a company
The long-term loop is gradual: establish reliable income, add garage capacity, buy trucks and hire drivers. Expanding too quickly multiplies loan payments and operating obligations before you understand your cash flow.
When to add a garage or truck
Wait until you can complete several owned-truck deliveries while maintaining a repair and fuel reserve. Then compare the cost of additional capacity with the income your current routine actually generates. A larger garage is useful only when you can keep its trucks productive.

Managing hired drivers
Assign drivers and inspect their progress rather than treating them as automatic money. The management improvements in version 1.58 make driver-skill progress and manager information easier to inspect. Revisit those screens as your fleet grows so you understand why a driver’s results change.
Keyboard, controller or wheel?
All three input methods can support a successful career. Select hardware by the kind of control you want, not by a belief that one device is mandatory.
| Input method | Strengths | Trade-offs | Who should choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard | Available immediately; simple digital bindings; no extra setup | Steering and throttle are less granular, so smooth cornering takes practice | Anyone starting on a standard computer or testing the game before buying hardware |
| Gamepad | Analog steering and throttle in a compact, familiar device | Fewer physical controls than a full wheel setup; some functions require combinations | Players who want smoother inputs without a desk-mounted wheel |
| Wheel and pedals | Fine steering, progressive throttle and brake control; immersive long-haul driving | Higher cost, desk space and setup time; still requires sensible bindings | Players who enjoy simulation and want the smoothest manual control |
Start with what you have. A wheel can make steering smoother, but it does not teach route planning, braking points or trailer geometry by itself.
Road safety habits that prevent expensive mistakes
- Brake before the hazard. Downhill sections and heavy trailers need more stopping distance than a car-like intuition suggests.
- Signal early and check mirrors. Confirm the lane is clear before moving, then cancel the signal when the maneuver is complete.
- Protect turning space. Position the tractor so the trailer can clear the inside edge; avoid abrupt mid-turn corrections.
- Respect rest and fuel prompts. A warning ignored on an easy road can become a crisis in a city or at a depot.
- Use manual saves strategically. Save before a first attempt at a tight reverse, a long unfamiliar route or a major purchase.
World of Trucks: optional online features
World of Trucks is SCS Software’s official online platform for community events, screenshots and external contracts. It is not required to learn the ordinary offline career loop. Link an account and follow the current account-activation procedure only when you want those online features; use the platform’s official support information for the steps that apply to your account and edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA first-10-hours checklist
- Finish enough Quick Jobs to operate steering, throttle, brake, indicators, lights, cruise control, Route Advisor, camera reset and wipers without searching.
- Practice both assisted and manual parking, beginning with a single trailer.
- Complete the relevant 1.58 Driving Academy forward and manoeuvring scenarios; leave double-trailer reversing until single-trailer geometry is familiar.
- Choose routes by deadline, cargo, depot difficulty and return position rather than payout alone.
- Maintain a reserve for fuel and repairs before purchasing a truck or cosmetic parts.
- After buying a truck, compare Company Jobs and Freight Market offers with operating costs included.
- Spend skill points to support the jobs you enjoy, then add distance or specialization as your routine improves.
- Expand garages, trucks and hired drivers only after your owned-truck income is consistent.
Euro Truck Simulator 2 was released by SCS Software on 19 October 2012. Its official factsheet described a world of more than 60 European cities; that figure is a factsheet-era description and should not be read as a current map count. The same progression still explains the game well: learn the road with borrowed work, assume responsibility one truck at a time, and build a fleet only when the underlying delivery routine is dependable.
