To run phpBB 3.3 in 2026, you need a web server or hosting account with a PHP release supported by the exact phpBB package you downloaded, one supported SQL database with its PHP driver, the required PHP modules, an enabled getimagesize() function, and temporary write access to the directories checked by the installer. phpBB does not publish a universal CPU, RAM, storage, bandwidth, or concurrent-user minimum. Those resources must be sized for your traffic, attachments, extensions, search activity, database size, and backup plan.

phpBB is a PHP application backed by a relational database. The server must provide all of the following before installation can succeed:
- A web server or web-hosting account on a major operating system with PHP support.
- A supported database engine and the matching PHP database extension.
- PHP features required by phpBB, including JSON, multibyte-string support, XML support, and an enabled
getimagesize()function. - Temporary write access to the configuration, cache, file, store, and avatar-upload locations during setup.
The official installation guide is explicit: “If your server or hosting account does not meet the requirements above then you will be unable to install phpBB 3.3.x.” Passing these checks only means the software can install. It does not guarantee that a low-cost plan will remain responsive when a gaming community adds image attachments, search indexes, extensions, and simultaneous visitors.

What PHP version does phpBB 3.3 require?
There is no single timeless PHP answer for every phpBB 3.3 package. Requirements have changed within the 3.3 series, and the documentation pages do not all describe the same release channel.

Before creating a database, identify the precise phpBB version in the archive or release notes, then read its included installation documentation. Ask a host which PHP minor versions it can select per site. A plan that offers PHP 8.3 may still be unsuitable if your chosen package requires an older branch, while a server running PHP 8.5 should not be treated as compatible unless that package documents it.
How to check PHP from a hosting panel
- Open the site’s PHP selector or runtime settings.
- Record the exact major and minor version, not only “PHP 8.”
- Compare it with the version range in the phpBB package’s installation guide.
- Confirm that the selected runtime applies to the forum’s web directory and command-line tasks, if you use scheduled maintenance.
Which databases does phpBB support?
phpBB’s official requirements list several database families. The version floor belongs to the database engine; the PHP driver must also be installed and enabled.

For a managed hosting account, ask three separate questions: which database engines are available, which database versions are running, and which PHP extensions expose those engines. A host can advertise MariaDB while omitting the PHP connector, or provide a database but deny the permissions needed to create tables and indexes.

Which PHP modules and functions are required?
The core installation expects these capabilities:
- JSON: used for structured data exchanged by phpBB components and extensions.
- mbstring: provides multibyte text handling for international usernames, posts, and search data.
- XML support: required by phpBB’s documented dependency checks.
- The chosen database extension: for example, MySQLi for MySQL, or the corresponding PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server, or Oracle driver.
getimagesize(): this PHP function must be enabled. It allows phpBB to inspect image dimensions when handling uploads and avatars.
Several capabilities are optional rather than installation blockers. zlib compression can reduce transferred response size, remote FTP support can assist certain file-management workflows, and GD adds image-processing features. Their absence does not remove the core database and PHP requirements, but extensions that depend on them may not work.
Verify modules before uploading phpBB
- Create a temporary PHP information page through your host’s documented method, or use the panel’s PHP extension list.
- Look for
json,mbstring, XML, and the database extension you plan to use. - Check that
getimagesizeis not listed under disabled functions. - Remove the diagnostic page after checking it; it exposes server details that should not remain public.
What filesystem permissions does installation need?
The installer must be able to write configuration and runtime data. During installation, phpBB directs you to make these locations writable as required by its checks:
config.phpstore/cache/files/images/avatars/upload/
The exact ownership and permission value depends on the web server user and your host’s security model. On shared hosting, use the control panel or the host’s documented file-permission tool instead of applying a broad, world-writable setting. On a VPS, make the web server account the owner where appropriate and grant only the write access the installer requires.
After setup, follow phpBB’s guide to make config.php writable only by the administrator. Leaving it writable by the web process increases the impact of a compromised extension or account. Keep the runtime directories writable only where normal operation requires it, and review permissions again after restoring a backup.

Can I run phpBB on shared hosting?
Yes, shared hosting can run phpBB when the account passes the documented checks. It is often suitable for a small or medium gaming forum because the provider supplies the web server, PHP runtime, database service, and backups. The word “shared” does not remove phpBB’s requirements; it limits how much control you have over them.
Questions to ask a shared host
- Can I select a PHP minor version that matches my exact phpBB release?
- Which database engines and versions are included, and is the matching PHP driver enabled?
- Can the account enable JSON, mbstring, XML, and
getimagesize()? - Can I write the five paths checked by the installer?
- Are attachment storage, database size, inode counts, CPU usage, and monthly traffic limited?
- Can I create scheduled tasks if an extension or maintenance routine needs cron?
- How are backups made, retained, and restored, and can I download an independent copy?
A shared plan becomes risky when the provider enforces aggressive CPU or process limits, blocks large attachments, or cannot change PHP modules. A technically compliant account may still produce slow page loads during a popular game launch if neighboring sites compete for the same resources.
When is a VPS or dedicated server justified?
A VPS gives you control over PHP versions, database configuration, filesystem ownership, scheduled tasks, logs, and resource allocation. That control is useful when you need a custom extension stack, frequent backups, larger attachments, or predictable performance. It also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, firewall rules, PHP hardening, database backups, monitoring, and recovery testing.
A dedicated server provides physical isolation but is not automatically necessary. Choose it only when measured demand, compliance requirements, or other workloads justify the additional administration and cost. phpBB’s official documentation does not define a minimum VPS size or a concurrent-user limit, so selecting a plan by a slogan such as “one-click forum server” is not evidence of suitability.

How much CPU, RAM, storage, and bandwidth do I need?
No reviewed official phpBB source publishes a universal minimum for CPU cores, RAM, disk space, bandwidth, or simultaneous users. Any fixed number presented as the phpBB minimum would therefore be an invented threshold. Capacity depends on the workload your board creates.
Estimate the workload that matters
- Traffic pattern: distinguish registered members, anonymous readers, and short bursts after a tournament or game update.
- Database activity: account for post volume, private messages, moderation logs, extensions, and search indexing.
- Files: estimate attachment and avatar growth, thumbnail generation, and the space required for multiple backup generations.
- PHP execution: include extension code, image handling, notification jobs, and administrative tasks.
- Network transfer: count page delivery plus image attachments, downloads, and backup transfers.
Start with the smallest plan that meets the hard requirements and leaves measurable headroom, then monitor CPU load, memory pressure, database latency, disk utilization, and traffic. Increase resources when sustained usage or queueing, rather than a single short spike, shows that the forum needs it. Keep backups and temporary files in the capacity calculation; a board that has room for today’s posts can still fail when a backup fills the disk.

- Identify the release: record the exact 3.3.x version and read the package’s included
INSTALLfile. - Match PHP: select a supported PHP minor version, paying attention to both the minimum and the documented upper bound.
- Select the database: choose one engine from the supported list and verify its PHP driver.
- Create credentials: make a database, user, password, host name, and port as supplied by the provider. Ensure the user can create and alter the required schema.
- Check modules: confirm JSON, mbstring, XML, the database extension, and enabled
getimagesize(). - Prepare the document root: upload the phpBB files to the intended HTTPS site or subdirectory and confirm that the web server can execute PHP there.
- Set temporary write access: follow the installer for
config.php,store/,cache/,files/, andimages/avatars/upload/. - Run the installer: enter database details, create the administrator account, and let the requirements screen report any missing component.
- Lock down the installation: restore restrictive permissions on
config.php, remove any diagnostic files, and follow the installer prompts for finishing or deleting the installation directory. - Test operations: create a test account, publish a post, upload an allowed image, run a search, and verify that an administrator can make a backup.
Common requirement failures and fixes
“Unsupported PHP version”
Check the exact package version first. Change the site’s PHP selector to a documented release, or obtain a phpBB package whose requirements match the runtime. Do not bypass the check by editing the installer; incompatibilities can appear later in extensions, database calls, or scheduled jobs.
Database driver missing
A database server being available does not prove that PHP can connect to it. Enable the matching extension, ask the host to install it, or choose a database for which the account provides a supported driver. Recheck the PHP runtime assigned to the forum’s virtual host.

getimagesize() disabled
Ask the provider to enable the function or remove it from the disabled-functions policy for the site’s PHP runtime. If policy cannot be changed, the account does not meet the documented requirements for that installation.
Installer reports unwritable directories
Confirm the path is correct, then inspect ownership and permissions. On a VPS, align the directory owner with the web server account; on shared hosting, use the provider’s file manager or support procedure. Grant write access only to the paths phpBB identifies, complete installation, and tighten config.php afterward.
Forum works but becomes slow
Separate a hard requirement failure from capacity pressure. Check database latency, PHP worker limits, memory pressure, disk space, attachment growth, extension activity, and search workload. Remove or reconfigure expensive extensions, optimize the hosting plan, or move to a VPS when the shared account cannot provide enough control. phpBB itself supplies no universal resource number that can diagnose this condition.
How to compare phpBB-compatible hosting plans
Use the following order when evaluating a “phpBB hosting” offer. Hardware specifications matter only after compatibility is established.

Server requirements continue to matter after the forum goes live. Keep PHP within the version range documented for your installed phpBB release, and read each phpBB update’s requirements before changing the runtime. Apply operating-system, PHP, database, and phpBB security updates through a planned maintenance window. Test upgrades on a copy when possible, especially if the board uses extensions.
