The praise centers on the game’s strategic depth and historical simulation; the main reservations concern its learning curve, interface and tutorial, AI, and technical issues reported on review builds. Steam user reviews are more mixed, and those ratings measure a different audience.

What do critics like about EU5?
Depth and interconnected systems
PC Gamer praises the interlocking mechanics, scale, and depth of the historical simulation. TechRadar likewise highlights the blend of politics, economics, and historical scope. For players who enjoy long-form strategy and managing systems that affect one another, that breadth is the central appeal.
Ways to manage the complexity
TechRadar describes the game as complex, but says some aspects are more accessible than in earlier entries. It also points to automation as a way to handle parts of the experience without personally managing every task. Its review records play as Castile, the Netherlands, and the Bank of Bardi; those examples describe that reviewer’s approach, not a universal measure of the game. Read TechRadar’s review.
What are the main criticisms?
Learning curve, menus, and tutorial
Depth comes with a substantial learning burden. TechRadar says menus can be unclear and the tutorial leaves some systems unexplained. Players new to the series, or those who want the game to teach its mechanics step by step, may find the opening difficult to navigate.
AI as an opponent
PC Gamer argues that the simulation’s complexity can exceed the AI’s ability to create interesting opposition. The reviews differ in their experience of AI aggression, so AI behavior is a point of disagreement rather than a settled consensus. The broader criticism is that intricate systems do not automatically produce consistently compelling opposition.

Performance and representation
PC Gamer reported stuttering and recurring crashes on its review build, tested on a Radeon RX 6800 XT, Ryzen 9 5900, and 32 GB of RAM. Those are the publication’s observations on its stated setup—not independent testing or evidence of how the current patched game performs.
TechRadar also criticized the release version’s representation of Native peoples, particularly in North America. That is a substantive reservation about the historical portrayal, separate from questions of strategy mechanics or performance.

How current are these reviews?
Europa Universalis V launched on November 4, 2025. The PC Gamer and TechRadar reviews were published in October 2025, so they describe pre-release or launch-era builds rather than necessarily reflecting the game after later patches. Their technical observations should be read in that context; the available review evidence does not establish the performance of the current version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Europa Universalis V worth buying?
The critical reception points toward a good fit for players seeking a deep historical strategy simulation and willing to learn its systems. It is a less certain choice if you prioritize a clear tutorial, effortless menus, reliably challenging AI, or a performance verdict based on the current build. The critic aggregate is favorable, while Steam’s retrieved user-review snapshot is Mixed; neither rating by itself resolves whether the game suits your preferences.
