There is no universally best Avowed companion: the right pick depends on your build, the fights ahead, and whose perspective you want to hear in the Living Lands. For this editorial ranking, combat usefulness and build flexibility come first, with story and regional context also counting. It reflects the companion guidance available for Avowed 1.3 in April 2026; it is not an official ranking.
Avowed is built around companions who contribute both in combat and to the story. In a developer interview, game director Carrie Patel described them as allies, advisors, and local guides who add context about themselves and the regions you explore.
How this Avowed companion ranking works
The order below is an editorial judgment, not a developer-issued tier list. Combat roles and build-fit examples draw on The Wizard’s Tower guide, which identifies itself as verified for Avowed 1.3 in April 2026. The guide’s recommendations are useful starting points, but a pairing that suits one build may be less valuable to another.
Story and setting matter too. Patel has explained that companions have regional ties and comment on the places you visit, so the best fit may be the person whose perspective you most want beside you—not simply the one whose combat role fills a gap.

Every Avowed companion ranked
1. Giatta — best for healing and support
Giatta takes the top spot for the broad value of keeping a party going. Patel specifically described her healing as part of the companions’ combat contributions. That makes her an appealing choice when your own build focuses on damage or control and you would rather not devote as much attention to support.
Her value is not a promise that she will be the strongest choice in every fight or for every build. If you already have the support role covered, another companion may add more to your party.
2. Kai — best for frontline pressure and enemy control
Kai is the clearest frontline pick in the developer’s description: Patel characterized his role as tank-like and noted that he can draw enemy aggression. That makes him a natural partner for a character who wants room to cast, shoot, or attack without being the main focus of every enemy.

Choose Kai when absorbing pressure and creating breathing room matter more to your approach than adding another source of specialized damage.

Yatzli earns a high place for players who want a companion geared toward magical offense. The Wizard’s Tower guide includes her in its combat and build comparisons, but its tier placements are editorial rather than official. Consider her when your own character benefits from a companion who adds a different kind of pressure instead of duplicating your preferred role.
Xbox Wire introduced Yatzli in a June 2024 pre-release deep dive. That interview helps establish the developers’ intended companion and camp design, not her current balance or strength in Avowed 1.3.

4. Marius — best for ranged pressure and a contrasting role
Marius rounds out the ranking as a useful option when your party needs a different combat angle from your own. The Wizard’s Tower guide discusses companion choices in relation to player builds; use that as a guide-level recommendation rather than proof of a universal performance order.
He may move higher for a build that benefits from the role he brings, or lower if your character already covers it. There is no source-backed performance statistic that establishes a fixed gap between him and the other companions.

The Wizard’s Tower guide, marked verified for Avowed 1.3 in April 2026, says players bring two companions into an area and can direct their active abilities. Its practical advice is to choose companions around the player character’s build. Treat that as current guide guidance, not a rule that every party must follow.

- You want more protection or space to attack: Kai’s tank-like role and ability to draw enemy aggression can complement a less durable character.
- You want healing support: Giatta is the developer-identified healer.
- You want a role that differs from your own: use the guide’s build comparisons to consider a companion who supplies a contrasting combat contribution rather than repeating your strongest approach.
- You care most about character and place: consider regional ties and companion commentary as part of the choice, not just combat utility.
Why companions matter beyond combat
Companions are also a way into the Living Lands’ people and places. Patel said they provide “a lot of additional commentary and context” about both their own character and the part of the world being explored. That makes party selection a story choice as well as a tactical one: different companions can give your journey a different point of view.
The Party Camp supports that narrative role alongside progression. In the June 2024 Xbox Wire deep dive, Patel called it “both your narrative hub and also your upgrade hub.” Because that interview predates release, it is best read as an explanation of design intent rather than a guide to present-day companion balance.
