Minecraft’s familiar player armor tiers are leather, chainmail, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite. Copper armor is documented for Java Edition 1.21.9, while the turtle shell is a special helmet. Minecraft also has armor for wolves, horses, and—starting in the Java Edition 1.21.11 notes—nautiluses. How you obtain a piece depends on its type and your edition: common routes include crafting, loot, mob drops, villager trades, and smithing-table upgrades.
Version matters: the newer animal-armor additions cited here are specific to Java update notes, so do not assume they appear in every edition. Check the item’s availability in the edition and version you play.
What armor types are in Minecraft?
Player armor is worn in four slots: helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots. Most familiar sets are named for their material. The turtle shell is a helmet rather than a complete set, and armor for animals is a separate category.
- Player armor: leather, chainmail, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite; copper armor is documented in Java Edition 1.21.9.
- Special head armor: the turtle shell, listed as a helmet type in Minecraft’s helmet guide.
- Animal armor: wolf and horse armor, plus copper, golden, iron, diamond, and netherite nautilus armor documented in Java Edition 1.21.11.
That list is not a guarantee of cross-edition availability. In particular, copper player armor is documented in the Java Edition 1.21.9 notes, while nautilus armor and netherite horse armor appear in the Java Edition 1.21.11 notes.

How do you get player armor?
There is no single method for obtaining every set. Crafting is a dependable route for some pieces; other armor may come from loot, mob drops, or villager trades. The recipes below apply to the named pieces, not automatically to every item in a set.
Leather, iron, and gold
The standard shaped recipes differ by armor piece. For example, a chestplate uses eight pieces of its material, while a helmet uses five. Minecraft’s chestplate guide gives the leather, iron, and gold chestplate recipes, and its helmet guide describes the five-material helmet recipe. Armor pieces may also be found as loot, occasionally dropped by mobs, or bought from villagers; these alternatives vary by piece.
Chainmail
Chainmail is a player armor tier, including helmets and chestplates. The official item explainers identify those pieces, but the cited material does not establish a complete current recipe or acquisition route for every chainmail slot. Check the item’s current in-game recipe and loot sources for your edition rather than assuming a full-set method.

Diamond
Diamond armor can be crafted. As one example, the chestplate recipe uses eight diamonds. Diamond gear is also the starting point for netherite upgrades, so it remains useful after you reach the Nether.

Netherite armor is made by upgrading diamond armor at a smithing table, not by crafting a standalone netherite chestplate. The current template-based process requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template as well as the relevant materials. Templates are found in Bastion Remnant chests; the official update notes state that each Treasure Room Bastion Remnant has two guaranteed templates. Consult the notes for your edition’s exact smithing requirements: Trails & Tales update and Taking Inventory: Netherite Ingot.
Upgrading preserves the diamond item’s durability, enchantments, and custom name, according to Minecraft’s netherite explainer. That makes the process an equipment upgrade rather than a fresh replacement.

Copper (Java Edition 1.21.9)
The Java Edition 1.21.9 notes add copper helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots. They can be crafted and repaired with copper ingots. The notes say copper armor has more durability than leather and gold, but is slightly less enchantable than iron; those statements apply to the copper armor addition documented for that Java update, not necessarily to other editions.
Turtle shell
The turtle shell is a special helmet recognized in Minecraft’s official helmet guide. The cited passage does not establish how to obtain it, so consult current item guidance for the version you play instead of relying on an unverified recipe or drop claim.

How do you get wolf, horse, and nautilus armor?
Wolf armor
Armadillos drop scutes periodically, and they can also be brushed for scutes. Use scutes to craft wolf armor, then equip it on an adult tamed wolf. Minecraft’s Armored Paws update notes describe wolf armor as providing the same protection as diamond horse armor. Because this information is from update material, confirm the details in the released edition you play.

Horse armor
Horse armor exists in several material variants, but the official sources cited here do not establish a complete current acquisition list for every baseline variant. Java Edition 1.21.9 specifically adds copper horse armor and says it uses the same loot table and generation chance as iron horse armor. Java Edition 1.21.11 adds netherite horse armor: upgrade diamond horse armor with a smithing table, following that version’s requirements.
Nautilus armor (Java Edition 1.21.11)
The Java Edition 1.21.11 notes document copper, golden, iron, diamond, and netherite nautilus armor. The copper, iron, gold, and diamond variants may be found in buried treasure, ocean ruin, and shipwreck chests. Make netherite nautilus armor by upgrading diamond nautilus armor with a smithing table. These are Java update-specific details; check whether the items are present in your edition.
What do armor stats tell you?
The figures below are for chestplates only, not helmets, full sets, or every piece made from the same material. Minecraft’s chestplate explainer supplies these named game-mechanics values; they are not results of a real-world study.

The netherite chestplate also has 10% knockback resistance. Copper is not included in this table because the cited source gives comparative durability and enchantability claims, but no corresponding chestplate figures here. Do armor trims make armor stronger?
No. Armor trims are cosmetic: they change appearance without providing gameplay benefits. A smithing template supplies the pattern, while the material ingredient determines the trim color. Templates are associated with particular structures; for example, Trail Ruins templates are obtained by brushing suspicious gravel, while Elder Guardians sometimes drop the Tide template because ocean monuments have no chests.
