For a typical player learning to win consistently, Yellow is the most forgiving starting deck and Plasma the most demanding. This is a practical editorial ranking of the 15 standard decks, based on their rules and the skills they ask of a player—not measured win rates or an official difficulty tier list. The middle of the list is especially open to debate: stake, experience, and comfort with deck manipulation or scoring can shift how hard a deck feels.
How this difficulty ranking works
The ranking weighs four things: how much a deck constrains hands, Joker capacity, consumable space, or useful card ranks; how much immediate help it gives; how freely it lets you adapt to shop results; and how much game knowledge it takes to turn its special rule into an advantage. Mechanics below are described in the community-maintained Balatro deck reference; the difficulty judgments are editorial interpretations of those mechanics.

Balatro has 15 standard starting decks. This list ranks them by predictable demands on a typical player, not by maximum power or unlock order. A high-variance deck may be easier in a favorable run, and a player who understands a deck’s special scoring or economy may find it far less challenging.

-
Yellow Deck
Extra starting money gives you more room to respond to early shop offerings, and the benefit is simple to use: you can spend it on useful options without first mastering a deck-specific trick. That forgiving opening makes Yellow the clearest entry point.

- Deftly deploy an array of potent tools
- Immerse yourself in Balatro’s distinctive psychedelic world.
- Improve your collection and discover new cards and secrets with every single run.
-
Blue Deck
An extra hand each round gives you another opportunity to score or manage your cards. It is a direct, flexible benefit that can help whether you are still learning hand selection or making deliberate choices.
-
Red Deck
An extra discard each round improves your control over which cards you see and can help you assemble scoring hands. It is useful across many strategies, though it offers less direct scoring opportunity than Blue’s extra hand.
-
Magic Deck
Starting with Crystal Ball and two Fool cards provides consumable resources from the beginning. Their value depends on knowing when and how to use them, so Magic asks for a little more familiarity than the straightforward extra-action decks.
Rank #2
Balatro: Special Edition - For Nintendo Switch- 150 Jokers, each with their own unique abilities.
- 15 Decks with distinct modifiers to choose from for each run.
- 5 potential variants of each Joker which add further abilities.
- 22 Tarot cards variants that can enhance your regular playing cards.
- 11 Planet cards that help level up your possible poker hands.
-
Checkered Deck
Its Spade-and-Heart-heavy composition makes flush-oriented plans easier to recognize and pursue. That concentration also narrows the suit mix, so adapting to other directions can be less natural.

Abandoned Deck
Removing face cards shrinks the rank pool and changes which card combinations are available. The constraint can point toward a distinct deck-building direction, but getting comfortable with non-face-card synergies takes adjustment.
-
Green Deck
Green pays based on hands and discards remaining, while removing interest income. It rewards efficient play, but changes the usual money strategy: a player must weigh using actions to improve a hand against preserving the deck’s payout.
Rank #3
Balatro: Special Edition - For Playstation 5- 150 Jokers, each with their own unique abilities
- 15 Decks with distinct modifiers to choose from for each run
- 5 potential variants of each Joker which add further abilities
- 22 Tarot cards variants that can enhance your regular playing cards

-
Ghost Deck
Ghost starts with Hex and makes Spectral cards available in shops. Those options can be powerful, but their effects and risks are less intuitive than a simple resource bonus, and using them well requires a coherent plan.
-
Anaglyph Deck
After each Boss Blind, Anaglyph grants a Double Tag. The potential payoff depends on which tags are available and when to use them, so its benefit is less predictable than an extra hand or discard.

Zodiac Deck
Zodiac starts with three named vouchers that add shop and consumable benefits. The extra options can help, but making the most of them requires recognizing which opportunities fit a run rather than relying on a single, automatic advantage.
Rank #4
Balatro (Special Edition) for Xbox Series X- Over 150 unique jokers, 15 decks with modifiers, and 22 tarot card variants.
- Dive into a psychedelic world complete with a synthwave soundtrack.
- Track your progress with an in-depth stats screen and permanent buffs from voucher cards.
- Special Edition includes 10 exclusive physical playing cards for real-life play.
-
Painted Deck
A larger hand gives you more cards to work with, but the deck removes a Joker slot. That trade-off makes the opening feel forgiving while potentially limiting the Joker engine you can build as the run develops.
-
Nebula Deck
Nebula starts with Telescope, which gives the run a more focused early direction, but it also loses a consumable slot. The reduced flexibility makes it harder to keep general-purpose options available.
-
Erratic Deck
Erratic randomizes ranks and suits, making the starting composition unpredictable. A favorable arrangement can make a run feel easy, while an awkward one can complicate it; that variance makes its difficulty especially hard to pin down.

-
Black Deck
Black adds a Joker slot but removes one hand each round. The extra Joker capacity is useful, yet losing a recurring chance to score or dig for cards is a persistent action-economy constraint that makes early survival less forgiving.
-
Plasma Deck
Plasma balances Chips and Mult when calculating score and doubles the base Blind size. That unusual scoring interaction, paired with the larger target, puts more weight on understanding how scoring components work together. Players who exploit the rule may find the deck easier than this ranking suggests, but it is the most demanding for a typical learner.
Why the middle of the ranking can move
The ordering is most useful as a guide to what each deck asks you to manage, not as a universal difficulty verdict. A player comfortable with shop timing and tags may find Anaglyph easier than a deck ranked above it; someone who knows how to build around Plasma’s scoring rule may place it much lower. Erratic is inherently variable, so its actual feel depends heavily on the starting arrangement.
No comparative win-rate figures or authoritative difficulty tiers are established by the deck reference. The list therefore makes no claim that one deck produces more wins than another; it describes the relative learning demands suggested by the rules.
