Black Ops III is the best all-around Zombies package, but the right Call of Duty depends on whether you want classic rounds, map quests, Outbreak objectives, horror, or open-world extraction.

Black Ops III is the best all-around Call of Duty Zombies package for players who want a broad selection of maps and easy access to several classics. Black Ops II and the original Black Ops follow closely, while Cold War is the strongest pick for a more modern take. The ranking below is an editorial recommendation—not a poll or universal consensus—and weighs map variety, replayability, accessibility, and how well each game’s signature ideas work.

Every major Call of Duty Zombies experience, ranked

Rank Game Format and best fit Trade-off
1 Black Ops III Map- and quest-centered Zombies; best for broad map choice and classic-map access. Its range may be more than a newcomer needs if they just want a simple first match.
2 Black Ops II Varied map concepts and experimentation; best for players who like each map to feel distinct. Its uneven design makes it more divisive than the top pick.
3 Black Ops Focused co-op wave survival; best for a straightforward continuation of the original formula. Less expansive in format than later entries.
4 Black Ops Cold War Modernized round-based play plus Outbreak; best for accessible systems and objective-led exploration. Outbreak is a substantial change of pace from confined-map survival.
5 World at War Foundational, tense wave survival; best for seeing where the mode began. It has fewer layers and less mechanical variety than later games.
6 Infinite Warfare A colorful, self-contained Zombies presentation; best for a break from the Black Ops tone. Its distinct identity may not suit players looking for the central Treyarch style.
7 Black Ops 4 Ambitious maps and multiple experiences; best for players willing to learn a more demanding systems layer. That added complexity can make it less welcoming as a first Zombies game.
8 Call of Duty: WWII Horror-forward Zombies; best for players who want a different atmosphere and identity. Its appeal is more about its separate tone than extending the familiar formula.
9 Modern Warfare III (2023) Open-world co-op PvE and extraction; best for mission-focused squads. It is not traditional round-based survival.
10 Advanced Warfare An energetic, exo-movement offshoot; best for faster, more mobile encounters. Its pace and movement distinguish it from the core Treyarch approach.
11 Vanguard Four-player co-op with randomized Covenant upgrades; best for players curious about a Dark Aether experiment. The overall package feels less cohesive than the entries above it.

1. Black Ops III

Black Ops III takes the top spot because it combines map breadth with a practical route back to earlier favorites. Its Zombies Chronicles expansion remasters eight maps that originated in World at War, Black Ops, and Black Ops II. That makes it an especially useful choice for someone who wants one later release through which to revisit several eras of the mode. Activision’s Black Ops III description also places the Origins characters at Der Eisendrache as their story continues.

Chronicles is an expansion, so check the specific platform and edition to confirm whether it is included or sold separately; current availability and edition contents are not established here.

2. Black Ops II

Black Ops II ranks highly for the willingness to make its maps feel like experiments rather than interchangeable arenas. That variety gives it strong replay appeal if you enjoy learning a different set of ideas from map to map. The same unevenness that makes its choices distinctive can also make the game feel less consistent, so it is a better fit for curious players than for anyone seeking the smoothest introduction.

#1 Best Overall
Call of Duty: WWII (PS4)
  • The Best Shooter Experience on Console in 2017 - Daily Star
  • An Explosive Return to its Roots - The Telegraph
  • Call of Duty returns to its roots with Call of Duty: WWII a breath-taking experience that redefines World War II for a gaming generation
  • Experience three different game modes: Campaign, multiplayer and co-operative
  • Experience Call of Duty combat, the bonds of camaraderie and the unforgiving nature of war against a global power throwing the world into tyranny

3. Black Ops

Black Ops is a strong choice when the appeal is the basic co-op loop: hold out against increasingly dangerous waves and learn the map with friends. Activision describes it as bringing back the fan-favorite mode from World at War, with up to three friends joining the player. Its focused structure makes it easier to recommend as a starting point than a game whose systems and objectives demand more explanation.

4. Black Ops Cold War

Cold War updates the familiar mode with new progression, classic perks, and weapons from its era, according to Activision’s game description. Its bigger distinction is Outbreak, which replaces the confines of a single survival map with travel between regions. Teams complete required objectives, scavenge, take on optional world events, and can pursue Easter eggs. Choose it if that combination of Zombies combat and open-ended tasks sounds appealing; stick with a traditional round-based map if you want a tighter survival loop.

Cold War and Vanguard are both connected to the Dark Aether storyline, but their match formats and execution differ substantially.

Rank #2
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - PS4 Legacy Edition
  • Legacy Edition Includes: Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered*;Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Content Description: Blood and gore, drug reference, intense violence, strong language, suggestive themes
  • Infinity Ward reaches new heights with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which returns to the roots of the franchise with large-scale war, epic battles, and cinematic, immersive military storytelling and takes players on a journey from Earth to beyond our atmosphere.
  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare delivers something for every Call of Duty fan with three unique game modes: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is back, remastered in true high-definition featuring improved textures, physically based rendering, high-dynamic range lighting and much more to bring a new generation experience to fans.
  • Team up with your friends with 10 of the iconic multiplayer maps from the online multiplayer mode that redefined Call of Duty introducing killstreaks, XP, Prestige and more in customizable, classic multiplayer modes.

5. World at War

World at War earns its place for establishing the mode’s tense, wave-survival foundation. Activision’s 2023 retrospective identifies Nacht der Untoten as the first-ever Zombies map. The original’s historical importance and stripped-back survival focus are part of its appeal, but players who want the progression, map variety, and layered systems of later entries may find it comparatively spare.

6. Infinite Warfare

Infinite Warfare is the best change-of-tone option in this ranking: it gives Zombies a colorful, self-contained presentation rather than leaning on the Black Ops atmosphere. Activision’s game page identifies Zombies as one of the game’s three modes and names Rave in the Redwoods as an installment in its first DLC pack. It is worth considering if you want a distinct flavor, even if the Treyarch games remain the safer choice for the mode’s central style.

7. Black Ops 4

Black Ops 4 begins with three distinct experiences—IX, Voyage of Despair, and Blood of the Dead—according to Activision’s guide, which also describes Classified as a reimagining of Five. The ambitious set of maps gives players several different places to dig into, but the more demanding systems layer can be a barrier for a newcomer. It is a better fit once you know you enjoy learning Zombies mechanics rather than simply surviving a few rounds.

Rank #3
Call of Duty®: Black Ops 6 - PlayStation 5
  • Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.
  • This is signature Black Ops across a cinematic single-player Campaign, a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, and the epic return of Round-Based Zombies.
  • The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
  • In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
  • Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.

8. Call of Duty: WWII

WWII gives Zombies a more horror-forward identity, making it a useful alternative if the lighter or more fantastical presentation of other entries is not what you want. Its separate tone is the main reason to choose it in this ranking; players whose priority is broad map variety or the most familiar round-survival experience may prefer a higher-ranked entry.

9. Modern Warfare III (2023)

Modern Warfare III Zombies is a substantial format change: an open-world, cooperative PvE extraction experience set in Urzikstan, rather than a classic round-based map. The official guide describes free exploration, contracts, activities, and story missions, with other squads in the same environment and danger escalating across regions. The deployment has a real extraction-style risk: equipment brought in can be lost if dropped or if the player is eliminated.

That makes it a good fit for squads who want objectives and a larger shared space, not for someone specifically seeking the confined-map rhythm of surviving successive rounds. In its August 17, 2023 reveal announcement, Call of Duty Staff called it “the largest Call of Duty Zombies map ever”; that is the publisher’s promotional description of the announced experience, not an independently measured comparison.

Rank #4
Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombie Chronicles - PlayStation 4
  • Eight fully remastered Zombies maps
  • GobbleGum functionality for the very first time
  • Chew on 10 all new GobbleGums, including 2 new Whimsical GobbleGums

10. Advanced Warfare

Advanced Warfare’s Zombies offshoot stands apart through exo-movement and faster, more mobile enemies. That energy can be a draw if you want a more kinetic match, but it also moves the experience away from the central Treyarch formula. Activision’s Advanced Warfare page describes Exo Survival as wave-based co-op and mentions exo-suited zombies; it does not comprehensively document all Zombies DLC, so that page alone should not be treated as a full map guide.

11. Vanguard

Vanguard connects to the Dark Aether storyline and supports four-player co-op, with randomized Covenant upgrades offering different approaches between matches, according to its official announcement. Those upgrades give the mode a clear experimental hook, but the overall package is less cohesive in this ranking than Cold War’s broader mix of familiar survival and Outbreak exploration.

  • For the broadest classic-map package: Black Ops III, with the platform and edition checked for Zombies Chronicles.
  • For a straightforward co-op wave-survival entry: Black Ops.
  • For map experimentation: Black Ops II.
  • For a modernized experience that also offers region-to-region objectives: Black Ops Cold War.
  • For open-world missions and extraction risk: Modern Warfare III (2023).
  • For a horror-forward tone or a colorful change of pace: Call of Duty: WWII or Infinite Warfare, respectively.

How Call of Duty Zombies changed

The series moved from a compact survival premise toward maps with more story and systems, then experimented with modes that alter the basic match structure. In Activision’s 2023 anniversary retrospective, Forsaken is identified as the 37th traditional Zombies map in Call of Duty history at that time. That figure counts the retrospective’s traditional-map milestone, not every variant, event, or Zombies experience.

  • Wave survival: World at War established the core appeal of holding out and learning a map. Black Ops carried that co-op structure forward.
  • Map quests and narrative: Later maps layered in secrets, progression, and continuing story; Black Ops III’s Der Eisendrache is one example.
  • Regional objectives: Cold War’s Outbreak sent teams between regions for required tasks, scavenging, optional events, and Easter eggs.
  • Open-world extraction: Modern Warfare III put squads in a shared Urzikstan environment with missions and contracts, and a risk of losing deployed equipment.

How to read this ranking

This order is an editorial synthesis that weighs replayability and map variety, the core match loop, accessibility, and whether a signature mechanic serves its game well. It is not a measured poll, critic aggregate, or claim of universal agreement. A player who prioritizes horror atmosphere, lore, high-round challenge, or open-world co-op can reasonably arrange these games differently. The scope is the major console and PC Zombies experiences attached to a Call of Duty release; it does not rank every individual map, mobile-only spin-off, limited-time Warzone event, or later release.
