They are built from four basic ideas: cooperative progression through chapters, competitive Survivor-versus-Infected play, a fixed-location endurance test, and rule variations. The right mode depends on who is playing, whether you want to finish a route or defend one place, and how much information and recovery help you want the game to provide. This guide explains every mode, what a round asks you to do, how the modes differ, and a sensible path from beginner to advanced play.

Valve described these as eight official modes in 2013. Steam Workshop listings use the same practical categories, while community content can add maps and custom rule sets that do not behave exactly like the standard versions.
Campaign: the baseline Left 4 Dead 2 experience
What you do
Campaign is a four-player cooperative journey through linked chapters. The team leaves a safe room, searches for weapons, ammunition, healing items and other supplies, fights the Infected, and reaches the next safe room. A finale at the end of a campaign changes the pace into a decisive last stand before extraction or another scripted escape.

Progress is shared: one player sprinting ahead can trigger threats or leave the others unable to help, while a separated survivor is vulnerable to a Special Infected attack. The practical objective is therefore not merely to move forward, but to move as a group while deciding when to spend scarce resources and when to keep them for a harder section.
Why it is the recommended starting point
Valve explicitly suggests that new players start with Campaign. It introduces the full loop without requiring knowledge of an opposing team’s spawn timing. You learn the chapter layouts, understand how safe rooms divide a route, and see how the four survivor roles support one another. The mode also accommodates computer-controlled teammates when a full human party is unavailable.

- Keep the team within rescue distance rather than racing to the next room.
- Call out supplies and threats before taking an item that another survivor may need more.
- Save stronger weapons and healing for finales or areas where retreat is limited.
- Use each safe room as a reset point: reload, heal when appropriate and check your equipment before opening the door.
- After a wipe, change one decision—route, resource timing or formation—instead of repeating the same rush.
Single Player: Campaign with bots
Single Player uses Campaign’s chapter structure and objectives but fills the other survivor slots with computer-controlled teammates. It is useful when you want to learn a map’s sequence, test a weapon or practice movement without waiting for a party. You still encounter the campaign’s ordinary pressure, including hordes and Special Infected, so it is more than a tutorial room.
The trade-off is social coordination. Bots can accompany and revive you, but they do not replace human callouts, deliberate target selection or flexible plans. Treat a solo run as reconnaissance: learn where a route narrows, where supplies tend to appear and which events force the team to stop. Then replay the campaign with people when you are ready to coordinate around those discoveries.
Realism: a harder cooperative campaign
What changes
Realism is a Campaign variant in which some survivor aids are removed and the difficulty is heightened. You receive less information about teammates and have fewer safety nets when a survivor is isolated or incapacitated. Navigation, target identification and recovery consequently require more attention than in standard Campaign.

How to approach it
- Stay close enough that every player can see or reach a teammate who is attacked.
- Use voice or text callouts for position, health, supplies and incoming threats; the interface provides less of that information for you.
- Choose a retreat location before starting a difficult event. A planned fallback is more valuable when recovery is less forgiving.
- Do not treat a downed teammate as a minor delay. Protect the revive area first, then restore the formation before moving on.
- Play the map rather than the scoreboard: a slower, compact advance usually preserves more health and ammunition.
Realism can be played cooperatively with people or with bots, but its information burden is most apparent when a human team must communicate clearly. It is a progression from Campaign, not a separate set of maps.

Versus is asymmetric competitive play. One team controls the Survivors and attempts to advance through campaign chapters; the other controls the Special Infected and tries to interrupt, isolate and incapacitate them. Teams switch sides, so a complete match evaluates both your ability to execute a route and your ability to create openings against one.
Survivor side
Survivors are judged by how far the team advances and how well it preserves health and momentum. Familiarity with the Campaign route matters because a human Infected team can exploit every pause, narrow passage and poorly timed door. The safest attack is often the one that waits until a survivor is separated or resources are already being spent.
Infected side
Special Infected are not most effective when they attack one at a time. Their value comes from timing: combine abilities, wait for a teammate’s setup, and strike when the Survivors are committed to an animation, crossing or rescue. A failed attack usually gives the Survivors time to regroup, so patience can be as important as aggression.
Why side switching matters
You cannot win Versus by mastering only one role. The opposing team’s route and score provide a reference for your own round, while the side switch exposes which decisions were robust and which depended on an opponent’s mistake. New competitive players should first finish several Campaigns, then learn one map from both perspectives before judging their performance.

Realism Versus: competitive play with fewer aids
Realism Versus combines Versus’s two-team structure with Realism’s reduced survivor information and harsher recovery conditions. The Survivor team must communicate and navigate with fewer interface cues, while the Infected team gains a more punishing environment in which isolation can decide a fight quickly.
This mode magnifies preparation. Teams need agreed callouts for locations, a plan for rescuing an isolated player and a clear decision about when to abandon a lost position. If ordinary Versus still feels confusing, Realism Versus will usually make the same uncertainty more costly rather than making it easier to learn.
Scavenge: win by managing gas cans
Scavenge is a round-based competitive mode built around gas cans. Survivors recover cans and use them while the opposing human-controlled Infected team tries to stop the process. The score is the number of cans recovered, so movement, carrying routes and defense around the objective matter more than simply reaching the end of a chapter.
How a round differs from Versus
Versus measures progress through a campaign and then gives the other team a chance to match or exceed it. Scavenge compresses the contest into an objective area and a defined supply of cans. A team can be ahead in combat yet lose by allowing a carrier to be interrupted repeatedly, and a clever defense can matter more than a long chase.

Useful team roles
- Collectors: retrieve cans and bring them to the required point without outrunning protection.
- Escorts: watch likely attack angles and clear the path for a carrier.
- Defenders: hold the objective area and respond to attacks instead of pursuing every Infected away from it.
On the Infected side, coordinate attacks around a carrier or around the moment Survivors must stop to use a can. The mode rewards teams that understand when to contest the objective and when to preserve an attack for a more valuable interruption.

Survival: an endurance test in one location
Survival is cooperative, but it removes the campaign’s journey. Everyone holds a single location against an unending attack and tries to last as long as possible. The key skills are choosing defensible positions, controlling the crowd, rotating when a position fails and timing limited equipment for the moments that threaten a collapse.
Because there is no next chapter to reach, route knowledge is replaced by space management. Before starting, identify exits, ammunition and healing locations, lines of sight and the places where a teammate can be trapped. A strong team assigns overlapping fields of fire rather than placing all four players in one doorway.

Survival is a good short-session option and a practical way to practice aim, target priority and communication under pressure. It also exposes weaknesses quickly: if a team repeatedly dies from the same flank or runs out of ammunition at the same time, the problem is usually positioning or timing rather than a lack of firepower.

Mutations are variations built from the other modes. An individual mutation can change weapons, enemies, team rules or win conditions, so “Mutations” is not one fixed ruleset. Read the selected mutation’s description before launching; two entries in the same menu can demand entirely different strategies.
Official and community variations
Official mutations provide curated twists, while Workshop content can add community-made variations and extensions. Availability and behavior can therefore depend on the specific item and the lobby’s installed content. If a mutation changes the available weapons or the way teams win, do not assume that Campaign habits or Versus conventions still apply.

When to choose Mutations
Pick a mutation after you understand the base mode it alters. That gives you a reference for judging what the new rule changes: pace, resource pressure, enemy threat, team composition or the victory condition. Mutations are ideal for a group that wants variety, but they are a poor first explanation of how Left 4 Dead 2 normally works.

A practical progression for new players
- Play Campaign first. Complete at least one campaign while learning movement, item sharing, safe-room preparation and rescue priorities.
- Use Single Player for reconnaissance. Revisit confusing chapters alone to learn the route without making a public team wait.
- Try Survival for focused practice. Work on holding a position, managing ammunition and calling threats under pressure.
- Move to Realism when standard aids feel automatic. Concentrate on staying together and communicating information the interface no longer supplies.
- Enter Versus after learning both sides of a map. Start by observing when human attacks are likely, then practice setting up attacks rather than rushing individually.
- Add Scavenge and Mutations for variety. Scavenge develops objective discipline; Mutations let you explore rules that may change the normal priorities.
- Reserve Realism Versus for a coordinated group. Its difficulty comes from stacking competitive pressure with reduced information and tougher recovery.
Campaigns, chapters and the game’s original scope
Left 4 Dead 2 launched in 2009 with five expansive campaigns. Those campaigns provide the connected routes used by the standard progression modes, while Survival and Scavenge focus on selected areas and Mutations can alter the rules applied to them. The number of campaigns is not the number of modes: a mode describes how a map is played, whereas a campaign is the route and setting being played.
Common mode-selection mistakes
Choosing Versus before learning the route
Human opponents punish navigation errors immediately. If you do not yet know where a chapter funnels the team or where a finale begins, Campaign gives you a lower-cost place to learn.
Assuming Realism is only a cosmetic change
Its defining difference is reduced assistance and increased difficulty, which changes how teams communicate and recover. Enter it expecting a coordination test, not merely a different visual presentation.
Treating Scavenge like a normal race
The gas cans are the scoring system. Fighting that does not protect a carrier or the objective can waste the time your team needs to win the round.

Playing Survival as if there is always a safer next room
There is no route completion to reset the pressure. Establish a defensible position and a fallback before the attack overwhelms the first one.
Launching a Mutation without reading its rule
Mutations are individual variations, not a single standardized mode. Confirm the weapons, enemies, team arrangement and win condition for the selected entry.
