Fader is the Ashlands Forsaken. The safest route to victory is to locate his coliseum with an Ashlands Vegvisir, bring nine Bell Fragments to craft three Bells, and enter with fire resistance, high-health food, healing supplies and Ashlands-tier equipment. Fader has 25,000 health, cannot be staggered, resists pierce and ignores fire and spirit damage, so blunt, slash, frost, lightning or poison damage is a better foundation.

Most deaths come from the fissure attack rather than ordinary melee hits. When flame circles mark the ground, sprint away immediately, keep moving until the spikes and lingering fire disappear, and never retreat into a burning patch. Magic offers the most forgiving damage windows, while melee is reliable with a strong shield and Bonemass power, and ranged combat is safer but slower.

Fader combines a large health pool, unavoidable area hazards and summoned Charred enemies. His 25,000 health is documented by the Valheim GameCore Wiki in 2026, and he cannot be staggered. You therefore cannot interrupt the encounter by repeatedly parrying or applying burst damage to a stagger meter.
His normal melee damage is primarily pierce. Piercing damage is resisted, while fire and spirit damage are ineffective. Blunt, slash, frost, lightning and poison deal full damage according to the matchup table used by current Ashlands guides. That single distinction determines which weapons, arrows and staffs are efficient.
The arena becomes progressively harder to use. Fissure circles, meteor impacts and fire breath leave burning ground, while Charred Warriors or Marksmen can occupy the routes you need for an escape. Treat movement as the first objective and damage as the second.
How to find Fader’s altar and summon him
Locate the coliseum
Fader’s Emerald Flame altar sits inside a coliseum-like Ashlands structure. The structure is not reliably visible from the coast, so search for an Ashlands Vegvisir. Vegvisirs are usually found in Charred Fortresses and reveal the nearest Fader altar on your map.

- Explore the Ashlands until you find a Charred Fortress.
- Activate the Vegvisir inside the fortress to reveal the nearest coliseum.
- Mark a safe route to the structure, accounting for lava crossings, Charred enemies and a place to recover if you die.
- Reach the altar and inspect the three Bell sockets.
Collect Bell Fragments
Each Bell is crafted at a Black Forge from three Bell Fragments. You need three Bells, so the total requirement is nine Bell Fragments. The fragments come from Charred Fortresses. Bring enough carrying capacity and supplies to make the fortress trips in one expedition if your route permits, but do not risk a full inventory in an unrecoverable lava crossing.
| Summoning item | Where it is made or found | Quantity required |
|---|---|---|
| Bell Fragment | Looted in Charred Fortresses | 9 total |
| Bell | Crafted at a Black Forge using 3 Bell Fragments | 3 total |
| Emerald Flame altar | Inside the Ashlands coliseum revealed by a Vegvisir | 1 |
Prepare the approach before placing the last Bell
Do not treat the summoning interaction as the start of preparation. Finish the route first. Place a portal well away from the altar and from the arena’s destructive effects, then confirm that the portal remains reachable after a death. Clear nearby Charred enemies or identify a route around them. Have a second portal or a recoverable fallback plan if your normal entrance can be covered by fire.
The preparation guidance for Ashlands progression assumes you have completed earlier progression and are carrying at least Mistlands-tier gear before entering the biome. Bring fire resistance before sailing or crossing lava. Once at the coliseum, eat, obtain the Rested effect, drink fire-resistance barley wine and put healing supplies on your hotbar before placing the final Bell.
Damage types and equipment choices
| Damage type | Result against Fader | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Blunt | Full damage | Strong choice for a mace or other blunt weapon. |
| Slash | Full damage | Effective for axes and swords that let you attack safely during recovery windows. |
| Frost | Full damage | Excellent for frost-based ranged ammunition and slowing pressure where available. |
| Lightning | Full damage | Useful when your weapon or staff provides it without sacrificing survivability. |
| Poison | Full damage | Poison arrows remain a valid ranged option. |
| Pierce | Half damage | Spears, bows and crossbows can work, but kills take longer. |
| Fire | Immune | Do not build the fight around fire weapons or fire arrows. |
| Spirit | Immune | Spirit-focused damage contributes nothing to Fader’s health bar. |
The resistance table does not make every pierce weapon unusable. Fader is large and slow, so a bow can still provide safe, consistent hits. It does mean that you are accepting a damage penalty in exchange for distance. Avoid relying on spears, bows, crossbows or fire damage alone when a full-damage alternative is available.

Preparation checklist
- Armor: Wear an Ashlands-tier armor set whenever possible. Earlier gear leaves less room for mistakes against the fissure and meteors.
- Fire resistance: Carry fire-resistance barley wine. Fire breath, fissure pools and meteor impact zones cannot be blocked.
- Food: Use strong health food before the summon. Melee players benefit from a larger health buffer; magic players can use two eitr foods plus one health food or an equivalent feast.
- Healing: Keep healing mead ready rather than buried in your inventory. Magic builds should also carry Lingering Eitr Mead for regeneration.
- Rested: Refresh the Rested effect immediately before placing the final Bell.
- Power: Bonemass is especially useful for melee and other physical-damage matchups because it reduces incoming physical damage.
- Durability: Repair weapons and shields. Ranged players should bring spare bows because durability can end an attempt before Fader is defeated.
- Escape route: Keep the arena’s outer loop and your portal approach clear enough to recover after a death.
Fader’s attacks and the correct counter
Bite
Fader lunges forward for a roughly 9–10 metre pierce attack. Do not stand directly in front of his head. Either block with a suitable shield or dodge sideways, then use the recovery animation for a short attack sequence.
Claw swipes
The left and right claw attacks cover frontal arcs. A shield block, sideways dodge or move to Fader’s flank avoids the worst of the hit. Attack only after the swing has passed; remaining in front to trade hits wastes health and stamina.
Spin
The spin is an area attack around Fader. Step outside its radius instead of attempting to out-damage it. Once the spin ends, punish the recovery with a limited combo and immediately return to a movement-ready position.
Fire breath
Fire breath travels in a line, leaves burning ground and cannot be blocked. Walk or dodge perpendicular to the line rather than retreating straight backward. Standing beneath Fader’s chin can avoid the breath in some positions, but use that as a brief positioning trick only: staying under him too long can place you inside the next fissure marker or a melee attack.
Meteors
Look up when Fader calls meteors and keep moving. Impacts create additional fire zones, and the landing spread varies, so there is no dependable fixed safe spot. A gentle circle around the arena is safer than stopping to aim for several seconds.
Fissure
Fissure is the main movement check. Fader marks the ground, flame circles appear around players, and spikes then erupt from those circles. The areas remain dangerous after the eruption because a flame pool lingers. The flames cannot be blocked and can kill a fully armoured player quickly.

- Stop attacking as soon as your ground is marked.
- Sprint out of every flame circle before the spikes emerge.
- Continue moving until the lingering fire has gone; do not step back onto the apparent edge of a pool.
- Use the outer arena deliberately so each escape preserves a clear section for the next pattern.
- Resume damage only after the floor is safe.
Players who panic and run through the center often cover their own fallback route with fire. A controlled outer loop gives you more information, more room to call the next fissure and fewer accidental contacts with burning ground.
Summoned Charred
Fader’s roar can create Charred Warriors or Marksmen. His ranged attacks can damage Ashlands enemies, so continuous kiting may allow the boss to thin his own summons. Kill the adds when they pin you, occupy the only clear escape lane or apply enough ranged pressure to prevent you from watching Fader’s telegraphs.
Melee strategy
Melee is dependable when you accept short damage windows instead of trying to stay underneath Fader. Equip an Ashlands shield such as a Flametal Shield or Flametal Tower Shield, use high-health food and maintain fire resistance. Dodge rolling is stamina-efficient and is usually safer than repeated blocks when fissure markers appear.
Basic attack cycle
- Stay just outside the head and claw arcs while watching for a telegraph.
- Dodge sideways through a bite or claw attack, or step beyond a spin’s radius.
- Land two or three hits during recovery.
- Stop before your stamina is empty and reset your spacing.
- When fissure appears, abandon the combo and sprint until the arena is safe.
Parrying is possible with strong shields, but a successful parry can push you away from the safest retaliation position. Use it only if you can preserve stamina and still recognize the next fissure or meteor cue. Bonemass power reduces the danger of the physical hits you cannot avoid, making it particularly valuable for a shield-focused attempt.
Ranged strategy
Ranged combat lets you circle Fader at long distance and gives more time to see bites, swipes and fissure markers. The trade-off is damage efficiency: pierce is resisted, so a bow kill is slower than a comparable full-damage build.
Choose ammunition deliberately
Frost Arrows are listed as the highest-DPS choice among the compared arrows, with Charred Arrows close behind. Poison Arrows are also viable because poison is not resisted. Avoid making fire arrows your primary ammunition, since Fader is immune to fire damage.

Run the outer circle
- Keep enough distance that a bite cannot close the gap before you react.
- Move laterally while shooting; do not stand still to complete a long draw if meteors or fissure markers are active.
- Use the arena perimeter, but leave yourself a fresh section rather than circling through old fire.
- Swap targets briefly when a Charred Warrior or Marksman blocks your route or forces you toward a burning zone.
- Repair or replace bows between attempts and carry a spare for a long fight.
Ranged builds should prioritize survival over perfect uptime. A missed arrow costs less than a death that forces a corpse run through Ashlands hazards.
Magic strategy
Magic is the most forgiving approach in the reviewed strategy because it can create space and control the arena rather than merely reacting to Fader’s attacks. It still requires disciplined movement: Staff of Protection does not make fissure or fire breath safe.
Use control to create damage windows
Staff of the Wild can root Fader and create temporary walls. The root gives you time to cast or reposition, while the walls can interrupt a direct approach and help preserve a clear lane for fissure escapes. Trollstav summons provide additional bodies that can tank and distract, buying time for damage or healing.
Manage eitr and protection
- Use two eitr foods plus one health food, or an equivalent feast, so your resource pool and survivability are both adequate.
- Keep Lingering Eitr Mead available for regeneration during longer attempts.
- Use Staff of Protection to absorb ordinary hits for yourself or party members, but still sprint from fissure and move perpendicular to fire breath.
- Do not let summoned creatures convince you to stand still. Their value is measured in safe casts and repositioning time, not in replacing movement.
Choosing between melee, ranged and magic
| Approach | Damage efficiency | Movement during fissure | Resource pressure | Control of Charred summons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melee | High with blunt or slash; poor with pierce weapons | Requires stopping attacks and spending stamina to sprint | Health, stamina and shield durability | Can clear nearby adds, but must enter danger |
| Ranged | Slower with pierce; frost, charred and poison arrows improve results | Strong, provided you keep moving while firing | Arrows, bow durability and stamina for repositioning | Can pick off Marksmen safely, but adds may force a route change |
| Magic | Strong sustained pressure without the pierce penalty when using suitable staffs | Strongest control through roots, walls and distractions | Eitr foods, casts and Lingering Eitr Mead | Best control through Trollstav distractions and Staff of the Wild positioning |
Choose melee if you have a strong shield, reliable stamina management and comfort with short recovery punishments. Choose ranged if your priority is distance and you can afford a slower kill. Choose magic if you have the eitr infrastructure and want the greatest number of tools for creating safe windows.
Arena execution plan
Before the summon
- Clear or route around Charred enemies between your portal and the altar.
- Place the portal far enough away that arena effects cannot destroy the approach or trap the spawn point.
- Repair equipment, set hotbar slots and confirm your food, fire resistance and healing supplies.
- Refresh Rested and use your chosen power before placing the final Bell.
During the fight
- Start on the outer arena and keep Fader moving around that loop instead of filling the center immediately.
- Watch the ground first, Fader’s body second and your damage meter third.
- When fissure appears, sprint clear of every marked circle and preserve unused ground.
- After meteors, avoid the new fire zones rather than trying to reclaim the shortest route.
- Let Fader’s ranged attacks hit Charred enemies when possible; remove an add yourself only if it threatens your escape.
- Resume your chosen damage rotation only after the arena has a safe lane.
Multiplayer assignments
In a group, designate one player to maintain distance and call fissure as soon as the ground markings appear. Other players can exploit melee recovery windows while the caller keeps the boss positioned away from the team’s escape lane. If a Charred Marksman creates crossfire, the caller should identify it immediately so the group does not dodge into the next hazard.
Common failure modes and fixes
Building around fire damage
Fire is ineffective against Fader. Replace fire-focused weapons or ammunition with blunt, slash, frost, lightning or poison damage.

Trying to stagger the boss
Fader cannot be staggered. Stop spending stamina on repeated parry attempts and use blocks, sideways dodges and recovery-window attacks instead.

The spikes and flame pool follow the warning circles. Sprint immediately, then keep moving until the ground is safe. Blocking does not solve this attack.
Returning through fire
Players often escape one circle and then run back over the same burning ground to maintain damage range. Continue around the outer loop and wait for a safe opening.
Running out of bow durability
A slow pierce-resistant kill can consume a bow. Repair before summoning and carry a spare so the attempt is not ended by equipment condition.
Letting summons pin the escape route
Use Fader’s attacks to damage Charred enemies when practical, but kill any Warrior or Marksman that blocks your only clear lane. Survival takes priority over maintaining focus on the boss.
