The Forza series began with Forza Motorsport in 2005 and grew into two main branches: track-focused Motorsport and open-world Horizon. Below is the official main-series chronology through 2023, with Forza Street identified separately as a spin-off. It is not a complete list of every regional edition, platform port, DLC bundle, or special edition.
What are all the major Forza games in release order?
Turn 10’s official franchise timeline lists these releases by year. Horizon games are developed by Playground Games; the Motorsport history is covered by Turn 10 Studios. The years below are the official timeline’s release years, not a list of every regional launch date or platform version.

Motorsport centers on circuit competition and improving driving skill. Horizon uses open worlds and gives more weight to exploration and freedom. As Turn 10 General Manager Dan Greenawalt put it, “Where Forza Horizon expresses its vision through freedom and exploration, Forza Motorsport focuses on competition and honing your skills.” Both branches aim for accessibility, authenticity, and immersion, but organize the racing experience differently. What changed across the series?
The original Motorsport established the track-racing series
Forza Motorsport launched on the original Xbox on May 3, 2005. Turn 10’s 2025 retrospective says it included over 230 cars, 17 track locations with 35 layouts, and a Career mode with five racing series. Those are the studio’s figures for the 2005 release, not current franchise totals. Turn 10’s anniversary history provides the historical figures.
Horizon opened the series to open-road exploration
The first Forza Horizon arrived on Xbox 360 in 2012, set in a representation of Colorado and built around open-road racing, exploration, and a festival. Microsoft’s fact sheet gives its regional launch dates as October 23, 2012, in North America, South America, and Asia, and October 26 in Europe; it describes a DVD release. Later entries expanded the launch-era car and track counts
Turn 10’s 2025 retrospective describes Forza Motorsport 2 as having almost 350 cars—including car packs—and 15 track locations with 52 layouts. For Forza Motorsport 3, it cites almost 500 cars and 25 tracks with 138 layouts. It describes Forza Motorsport 7 as featuring over 700 cars. The 2023 release is officially titled Forza Motorsport. Greenawalt said Turn 10 designed it as “an evolving racing platform” that would gain content, explaining that the studio no longer needed a number in the title. Xbox Wire reported its October 10, 2023 release on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, and described Steam, Game Pass, and cloud availability. At launch, Greenawalt cited 20 tracks and over 500 cars; those are launch-era claims, not necessarily the game’s current content totals. Does this list include every Forza release?
No. It is a chronological guide to the major releases in the two principal branches, plus the separately labeled Forza Street spin-off shown in Turn 10’s timeline. It does not attempt to inventory every regional edition, port, re-release, DLC package, or special edition. The sources establish the main franchise chronology, not a comprehensive catalog of every product carrying the Forza name.

A historical release year does not establish that a game remains digitally purchasable or works on a newer Xbox. Check each specific title’s platform, region, physical or digital format, condition, and current compatibility before buying. The first Forza Horizon, for example, was released on Xbox 360 DVD; that fact alone does not establish current stock or compatibility for a particular copy.
