There are 20 Mask Shards in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Collect four to complete an Ancient Mask and permanently add one mask to Hornet’s health; collecting all 20 adds five masks, bringing her permanent total to ten. Completing a mask also restores her health. Shards are split between direct pickups, shop purchases, challenges, and Wishes, so a map sweep alone can miss several.

How to plan your shard route
There is no single best order established for every save file. Choose the next stop based on what your current progression makes practical, not just its number in the checklist.

Do not treat them as missed early-game pickups.
- Check movement abilities and keys: Several locations name a specific gate, including Drifter’s Cloak, Clawline, Faydown Cloak, Needolin, Silk Soar, and the Key of Apostate. A detour is only useful if you can reach the relevant route.
- Separate pickups from rewards: Shops require Rosaries, while the merchant and combat rewards require completing and turning in Wishes. If you are short of shards, check your active Wishes as well as unexplored rooms.
- Weigh the challenge and travel: A route may involve enemy waves, a gauntlet, a boss, races, hazards, or a platforming sequence. Compare those demands with nearby options and your current abilities.
- Verify route details in your current game: Published guides sometimes use shorthand for ability names or describe the route differently. Check your map, quest state, and named ability gates before committing to a long trip.
What collecting all the shards does
Every four shards complete one Ancient Mask. Each completed mask permanently raises Hornet’s maximum health by one mask and restores her health when completed. Since there are 20 shards, collecting the full set grants five additional masks.
