As a visual and conceptual ranking, Mega Zeraora takes the top spot: it feels like a striking extension of the Pokémon’s identity, rather than a change for change’s sake. This is an editorial ranking, not a competitive tier list; no current battle data establishes which form is strongest. The roster spans the base game, free additions, ranked-season rewards and the Mega Dimension DLC, so availability and story spoilers are noted where relevant.
How this ranking works
Mega Evolution is temporary: a Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with the Mega Stone held by a Pokémon. Some forms change type, so visual appeal and battle role are different questions. The Pokémon Company describes timing the transformation as important to winning battles, but that does not establish a ranking of these forms’ competitive strength. This list judges design impact, fit with the Pokémon’s concept and distinctiveness in Legends: Z-A—not damage, tournament results or acquisition difficulty. The official Mega Evolution overview explains the mechanic.
Spoiler note: The entries include forms and Pokémon introduced through story encounters and the Mega Dimension expansion. Availability can also depend on postgame progress, gifts or ranked rewards.
Every Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, ranked
The ranking is selective rather than a claim that every form has been individually tested or that the list is a complete, deduplicated catalogue. It highlights the forms with the strongest visual or conceptual case. The broader roster guides below cover additional returning and new forms.

Mega Zeraora
Its energetic, electric-cat identity gives the transformation a clear design foundation. The form stands out for turning that existing character into something more intense without losing the species’ recognizable core.
-
Mega Lucario Z
The Z designation makes this a particularly distinctive variation on a familiar Mega Evolution. It earns its place for giving Lucario a fresh identity instead of relying only on recognition from earlier games.
-
Mega Absol Z
Absol’s ominous, elegant image is a strong fit for an alternate Mega form. Its appeal lies in the way the new variant builds on the Pokémon’s established mood and silhouette.
-
Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y
Having X and Y versions makes Raichu one of the most interesting cases in the expansion: there are two interpretations to compare, not just a single upgraded design. They belong together here because the choice between them is part of the appeal.

Mega Darkrai
Darkrai’s existing association with nightmares gives a Mega form a clear thematic lane. Its strongest case is concept fit: the transformation has an immediately legible place in the Pokémon’s identity.
-
Mega Golisopod
Golisopod already has an imposing, armored silhouette, so the Mega treatment has a solid visual base to work from. It ranks well for reinforcing the species’ formidable look.
-
Mega Staraptor
Staraptor’s forceful bird-of-prey identity is easy to communicate visually. Its appeal comes from how naturally the species’ established shape and attitude support a more dramatic form.

Mega Glimmora
Glimmora’s unusual crystalline design makes it a good candidate for a striking transformation. The form stands out among more familiar returning Mega Evolutions because the underlying Pokémon already has an unconventional visual language.
-
Mega Scovillain
Scovillain’s split, pepper-inspired identity gives its Mega form a distinctive concept to develop. It is a memorable pick for readers who value a transformation that grows from a specific species motif.

Mega Tatsugiri
Tatsugiri’s small, unmistakable fish design offers a contrast to the imposing look many Mega forms pursue. That contrast is its strength: the Pokémon’s concept remains the point, rather than becoming a generic powerhouse silhouette.
-
Mega Crabominable
Crabominable’s already exaggerated appearance gives its Mega form room to lean into its oddball character. It makes the list for personality and visual distinctiveness rather than conventional sleekness.

Mega Golurk
Golurk’s golem identity is a natural match for a transformation centered on scale and presence. It has an appealing concept, though its core idea is less surprising than the strongest entries above.
-
Mega Meowstic
Meowstic’s two-gender design already gives the species a distinctive identity. Its Mega form is an interesting roster addition, though it makes a subtler impression than the more radical or conceptually sharp designs ranked higher.
-
Mega Heatran
Heatran’s volcanic, metallic character gives it a clear visual foundation. It is a solid fit for Mega Evolution, but its appeal is more about reinforcing familiar traits than introducing a striking new direction.

Mega Baxcalibur
Baxcalibur’s imposing, dinosaur-like identity is a straightforward match for a Mega transformation. It has an evident visual fit, but the concept is less distinctive than the most inventive forms in this ranking.
What are all the Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
The game’s roster is spread across more than the launch set: it includes base-game forms, free additions, ranked-season rewards and Mega Dimension content. Nintendo Life’s base-game roster guide lists 72 forms and describes 29 as new to the base game. That guide includes post-launch free and ranked additions, so 72 should not be presented as the launch-day count or as the total across all content.
The Mega Dimension guide lists new forms including Mega Raichu X and Y, Mega Zeraora, Mega Lucario Z, Mega Absol Z, Mega Crabominable, Mega Scovillain, Mega Staraptor, Mega Tatsugiri, Mega Golisopod, Mega Golurk, Mega Meowstic, Mega Heatran, Mega Glimmora, Mega Darkrai and Mega Magearna. It also lists returning forms such as Primal Kyogre, Primal Groudon, Mega Rayquaza, Mega Latias and Mega Latios. Its stated count of “at least” 10 new forms is a lower bound, not a final total. Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur appear in both guide contexts, so simply adding guide counts would risk double-counting.
The official Mega Dimension announcement identifies the DLC as additional story and content set in Hyperspace Lumiose, released on December 10, 2025. It describes hyperspace levels and donuts made with berries that can power up Pokémon in hyperspace; those mechanics distinguish the expansion’s setting, but do not determine which Mega form is best.
How do you get the ranked-reward Mega Stones?
Some Mega Stones are tied to ranked battles rather than ordinary story progression. The Pokémon Company’s ranked-battle announcement identifies Greninjite, Delphoxite and Chesnaughtite as rewards for seasons 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Treat those acquisition details as time-sensitive: reward availability can depend on the season and current game distribution. The announcement confirms the season assignments; it does not make ranked access a measure of a form’s quality.
Where does the game and DLC fit?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is available for Nintendo Switch, with a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition also identified on the official game site. Mega Dimension is additional DLC, not a separate roster that should be folded into the base-game count without checking overlaps. The game’s official page says effective Mega Evolution can dramatically shift battle odds, but the forms’ visual ranking above should not be read as a claim about battle performance.
