Every Star Ocean Game, Ranked from Worst to Best

The Second Story remains the series’ best all-round adventure, while The Second Story R is the easiest modern way to experience it. Here’s how every distinct Star Ocean game compares.

My top pick is Star Ocean: The Second Story, but the best starting point for many players is its modern remake, Star Ocean: The Second Story R. This ranking compares the series’ distinct game experiences—not every port or edition—by story and characters, combat, pacing and presentation, and how well each balances science fiction with fantasy. The order is a critical judgment, not an official or objective consensus.

What counts as a Star Ocean game here?

Square Enix’s official franchise lineup mixes original entries with remakes, versions and a mobile game. This list ranks distinct experiences: ports and remakes are grouped with the game they remake, while Blue Sphere and the discontinued mobile entry Anamnesis are included because each is a distinct game. First Departure R is therefore discussed with the original Star Ocean; The Second Story R with The Second Story; and Second Evolution as another version of that second game, not a separate slot. The same principle applies to Till the End of Time Director’s Cut and The Last Hope 4K & Full HD Remaster. The publisher’s lineup is available on its official series portal.

The franchise began in 1996 with the Super Famicom original. The second game released in Japan in 1998, North America in 1999 and Europe in 2000; those dates describe the original regional releases, not the later remakes. Square Enix’s First Departure R overview distinguishes the original from the PSP remake First Departure, released in 2007. Its support page identifies The Second Story R as a remake of the second game.

The ranking

1. Star Ocean: The Second Story

The series’ strongest all-round experience earns the top spot through the appeal of its two protagonists, its party-centered storytelling and a satisfying mix of exploration, science-fiction mystery and fantasy adventure. Its combat and side systems give players room to experiment without making the journey depend on mastering a single elaborate mechanic. The original presentation is dated, so newcomers may prefer The Second Story R, whose updated 2.5D approach is the most inviting way to play this story today.

#1 Best Overall
Star Ocean The Divine Force - PlayStation 5
  • Fly Around Areas Freely - characters can freely move in 360 degrees roaming the skies; Whether flying to explore rockfaces and roofs of buildings, or leaping off cliffs to enter battles, there’s more freedom in terms of adventuring and battling
  • Fastest and Strongest Action in the Series - Characters can subdue large numbers of enemies with high-speed movement attacks, special abilities where you can vanish for a moment right in front of your enemy, and a skill which could kill in one hit

2. Star Ocean: The Divine Force

The newest mainline entry on the publisher lineup is an ambitious modern adventure, and its science-fiction scale gives the series’ familiar fantasy settings a welcome sense of context. Its combat is energetic, and the choice between protagonists gives the campaign a useful perspective shift. It does not sustain the same narrative cohesion as the top-ranked game, but it is a strong pick for players who want a contemporary-feeling entry rather than a retro remake. Square Enix announced its October 27, 2022 launch for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Steam in its launch announcement.

3. Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

The 2003 entry is the series’ boldest in scale and its most divisive in narrative direction. It builds a memorable world and gives combat substantial depth, but its long stretches and major story turn can make it a harder recommendation than the more balanced entries above it. Choose it when you want a sprawling, systems-heavy RPG and are willing to let its story take risks.

Rank #2
Late for the Sky Ocean-Opoly Board Game - Marine Life Strategy Fun
  • Ocean adventure theme: Dive into a sea‑life property trading board game featuring sharks, dolphins, reefs, and beaches. Build sets, collect rent, and outsmart rivals for board game night fun
  • Family-friendly gameplay: Designed for 2–6 players and ages 8+, this family game blends light strategy and luck with easy rules, quick turns, and engaging cards that keep kids and adults involved
  • Educational marine facts: Discover ocean animals, habitats, and conservation tips as you play. Ideal for classrooms, homeschool, or STEM enrichment while practicing reading, math, and decision making
  • Replayable strategy: Variable outcomes, creative tokens, and dynamic card pulls deliver fresh challenges every session. Balance risk, manage resources, trade wisely, and plan routes to victory
  • The board game classic heads into the deep blue sea

4. Star Ocean: The Second Story R

This is the most approachable version of the second game for many players: its 2.5D presentation pairs pixel characters with 3D environments, preserving a retro-RPG sensibility while making the world easier to revisit on current platforms. The remake is a polished way to experience the series’ high point, though it does not replace the original’s particular texture for players curious about the 1990s release. Square Enix’s announcement listed Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4 and Steam.

5. Star Ocean: First Departure R

The first game establishes the franchise’s signature meeting of spacefaring people and a less technologically advanced world. Its compact adventure is appealing, but the characters and systems feel less developed than in the later games. First Departure R is a practical way to visit that origin; remember that it is a later version of the 1996 game, not the Super Famicom original itself.

Rank #3
Star Ocean: The Divine Force
  • Customers who early purchase any physical edition of STAR OCEAN THE DIVINE FORCE will receive an in-game mini-game pawn pack.
  • Choose between two main protagonists with 8 additional playable characters and discover their interwoven stories in this epic fantasy.
  • A fast paced Action-RPG with a robust and spontaneous battle system.
  • Fly around areas freely and fully explore the environments in 360° as your characters roam the skies in search of adventure and combat.
  • A mix of sci-fi and fantasy in the setting and story where you'll traverse space and encounter alien lifeforms and space wizards to name a few.

6. Star Ocean: The Last Hope

Set at the beginning of the series’ chronology, this entry leans most heavily into space exploration and the ensemble’s journey. Its combat rewards active play, and its setting gives the science-fiction half of the formula more room. The uneven character writing and pacing keep it below the series’ best, but players who value a large cast and a more overtly spacefaring story may rate it higher.

7. Star Ocean: Blue Sphere

This Game Boy Color follow-up to The Second Story is notable for taking the series to a handheld format and continuing familiar characters’ story. Its smaller scale and platform-specific design make it a fascinating branch rather than a substitute for the mainline console experiences. It is best approached by fans interested in the franchise’s history and continuity.

Rank #4
Star Ocean Till the End of Time
  • Fate and Sofia are on vacation when the attack begins. As they separate, they'll travel to different worlds and fight to reunite across worlds
  • Traditional role-playing action goes to a new level with an in-depth story, fantastic anime-style graphics and a more advanced fighting system
  • Incredible features like extended cinematic sequences, a new Vs. Mode and unparalleled real-tim combat choices draw you into this epic role-playing saga

8. Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness

The 2016 installment has a likable party and a direct connection between its fantasy setting and the wider universe, but the adventure feels constrained. Its environments and encounters do not consistently provide the variety or momentum expected from the series. It is worth considering for completionists, though it is not the entry I would recommend first.

9. Star Ocean: Anamnesis

The mobile game earns its place as a distinct franchise entry, but it is difficult to recommend as a game to play now: it was a live-service title, and the official lineup’s inclusion does not mean it remains available. Its roster-based premise and mobile structure also make it a different kind of experience from the console RPGs. Treat it as part of the series’ history rather than a current starting option.

Which Star Ocean should you play first?

  • Best overall story and party: The Second Story R is the easiest current-facing route into the game ranked first.
  • Best modern entry: The Divine Force offers newer presentation and a self-contained adventure.
  • Best for series history: First Departure R gives a more accessible route to the 1996 original’s story.
  • Best for a large, systems-heavy RPG: Till the End of Time is the ambitious, less streamlined choice.

Square Enix marked the franchise’s 30th anniversary on July 19, 2026, and its portal also reports a Nintendo Switch 2 version announcement for The Second Story R dated July 16, 2026. That portal does not establish the new version’s language, regional availability or physical-edition details, so check the relevant regional listing before choosing a platform.
