There is no publisher-confirmed, all-series in-world timeline for the Tales games. If by “chronological” you mean when the games originally appeared, the selected official catalog entries below run from Tales of Phantasia (1995) to Tales of Vesperia and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (both 2008). If you mean story continuity, the clearest confirmed ordering is to play Tales of Symphonia before its sequel, Dawn of the New World.
What “chronological order” means for Tales
Chronological order can refer to original release year or to the order events happen in a fictional world. Those are different questions. Bandai Namco describes the franchise as role-playing games featuring different protagonists and their journeys, and its catalog supplies selected release-year labels rather than a complete, unified in-world timeline. The publisher’s franchise catalog and game listings do not establish one shared chronology for every title.

The release sequence below is therefore a selected catalog chronology, not a complete bibliography. It uses the years displayed by Bandai Namco; those labels do not provide exact day-level dates, and games sharing a year are kept together rather than assigned an unsupported order within that year.
Tales games in original release-year order
| Year shown in Bandai Namco catalog | Game(s) |
|---|---|
| 1995 | Tales of Phantasia |
| 1997 | Tales of Destiny |
| 2000 | Tales of Eternia |
| 2002 | Tales of Destiny 2 |
| 2003 | Tales of Symphonia |
| 2005 | Tales of Legendia; Tales of the Abyss |
| 2006 | Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology |
| 2008 | Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World; Tales of Vesperia |
These years are the entries displayed in Bandai Namco’s selected franchise catalog, not a claim that the list includes every regional release, port, remake, mobile game, or crossover. The catalog also lists later entries including Tales of Xillia, Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Berseria, and Tales of Arise. Its changing display order is not enough to establish a precise release chronology for those games, so they are not assigned years here.

Confirmed story order and connections
Play Symphonia before Dawn of the New World
Bandai Namco describes Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World as taking place several years after Tales of Symphonia. For that connected story, the order is straightforward: play Tales of Symphonia first, then Dawn of the New World. The publisher’s official page for Tales of Symphonia Remastered lists the remaster for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Phantasia’s time travel does not create a series-wide timeline
Tales of Phantasia includes time travel: Cress and Mint travel back in time to protect the World Tree and later confront Dhaos in the present. That plot detail establishes movement through time within Phantasia; it does not establish where the game falls relative to every other Tales world.

Which order should you play?
- Want historical series progression? Follow the release-year table, keeping same-year titles unordered unless you verify their individual original release dates.
- Want the confirmed Symphonia story? Play Tales of Symphonia before Dawn of the New World.
- Want a modern entry point? Choose a game that is available on a platform you own, then follow any explicitly identified sequel relationship if you continue into a connected story. The official catalog’s selected list is not a complete guide to present-day platform availability.
Remasters are editions, not new original story entries
Remasters belong in an availability check, not in the original release-year chronology: they reissue existing games rather than add a new original story entry. Bandai Namco’s current catalog lists contemporary editions separately from older releases. It also lists Tales of Eternia Remastered as coming October 16, 2026; that date is still in the future as of October 8, 2026, so check the publisher’s listing for current release status and platforms before making plans. The publisher’s 30th-anniversary page describes the remaster project as bringing classic games to newer consoles with quality-of-life enhancements: Tales of 30th Anniversary.
