Thief II: The Metal Age is the best all-around Thief game, while Thief: The Dark Project—best played as its expanded edition, Thief Gold—is the essential starting point. This ranking covers five released standalone entries, including the VR game; the order is an editorial judgment based on stealth, level design, atmosphere, story, and how approachable each game is today.
Every released Thief game, ranked
The first game appears once in this list: Thief Gold expands Thief: The Dark Project; it is not a separate sequel. The series chronology and current catalog can be checked in the Steam Thief franchise listing.
- Thief II: The Metal Age (2000)
- Thief: The Dark Project / Thief Gold (1998 / 1999)
- Thief: Deadly Shadows (2004)
- Thief (2014)
- Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow (2025)
1. Thief II: The Metal Age
Thief II is the strongest complete expression of the series: it gives you room to observe, plan, and choose how to cross a guarded space, then makes the act of staying unseen feel like the point rather than a side challenge. Its 15 non-linear levels, improved enemy AI, and new gadgets are called out in the Steam listing.
Why it ranks first
- Stealth and freedom: Levels reward attention to patrols, light, sound, and alternate routes. Gadgets give you options without turning every encounter into a fight.
- Mission design: The non-linear missions make the city feel like a place to infiltrate, not simply a corridor between story scenes.
- Atmosphere: The series’ tension comes from listening and reading your surroundings as much as from what you see.
Who should play it
Choose Thief II if you want the most polished classic-style stealth campaign and are comfortable with an older game’s presentation and pacing. It is also a fine first game if the original’s stranger, more uneven mission mix does not appeal.

2. Thief: The Dark Project / Thief Gold
The 1998 original established the series’ stealth-first identity: Garrett is vulnerable, darkness and noise matter, and avoiding a fight is often the cleverer choice. Thief Gold, released in 1999, is the expanded re-release, adding missions and content rather than serving as a second principal entry. The Steam description highlights stealth tools and a story of deception and revenge.
Why it ranks second
- Distinctive atmosphere: Its medieval city, sound-led tension, and unsettling supernatural turns give it a mood the later games do not simply repeat.
- Foundational stealth: The game makes hiding, listening, and managing exposure central to the experience.
- Uneven adventure: The mix of grounded heists and more fantastical missions is memorable, though not every stretch is as focused as the best city infiltrations.
Which version to play
For a first run, choose Thief Gold if it is available to you: it contains the original game’s core campaign along with its expanded material. If you are comparing series entries, count the Dark Project/Gold pair as one game, not two.
Rank #2
- UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection for PlayStation 5 New Video Game
3. Thief: Deadly Shadows
The third game brings Garrett’s stealth into a more compact, later-era format. Its appeal is the continuation of the series’ shadowy city and character-driven story, while its scale and structure make it a less definitive showcase of open-ended mission design than the first two games.
Why it ranks here
- Series continuity: It continues Garrett’s story and the world built by the earlier games.
- More approachable scope: Its narrower overall feel can be easier to take in than the sprawling classic missions, but it offers less of the open-ended depth that defines the series’ peak.
- Best for returning players: It lands better after the first two games, when the setting and character have context.
4. Thief (2014)
The 2014 reboot is a separate modern-era interpretation of the series rather than a continuation that replaces the earlier games. It retains stealth and burglary as its premise, but its more contemporary presentation does not deliver the same consistently flexible mission design that makes the classics endure.

Rank #3
Why it ranks fourth
- Modern entry point: Its newer presentation may be a more comfortable first step for players who find older games difficult to approach.
- Less systemic freedom: It ranks below the classic games on the qualities that most distinguish Thief: patient observation, varied routes, and the feeling that a mission is yours to solve.
- Best for a specific preference: Try it if you want a more recent, self-contained take on Garrett and the series’ premise, rather than a substitute for the classics.
5. Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow
Released on December 4, 2025, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow belongs in a current ranking, but it is not a direct like-for-like comparison with the flat-screen games. It follows Magpie, a thief who encounters a legendary mechanical eye with Garrett trapped inside; Garrett becomes her mentor. The official Thief announcements identify Maze Theory as developer and Vertigo Games and Eidos-Montréal as involved.
What VR changes
In VR, the physical act of reaching, handling tools, and working a lock is part of the stealth fantasy. PlayStation’s announcement describes tactile interactions including lockpicking and opening secure chests, and names the original games as inspirations. That hands-on approach gives the entry a different strength; it does not make it the best choice for someone seeking the classic games’ mouse-and-keyboard mission structure.

Is Thief: The Dark Project Remastered released?
No. As of October 8, 2026, the official announcement describes Thief: The Dark Project Remastered as forthcoming in winter, without a precise release date. It says Nightdive Studios, Eidos-Montréal, and Atari are involved, and that the remaster includes The Dark Project plus additional missions, content, and updates from Thief Gold. Because it is not yet listed here as a released game, it is not ranked. Check the official Thief announcement archive for status updates.
