Metacritic’s PlayStation 4 page showed a 78/100 metascore from 89 critic reviews in a snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, labeled “Generally Favorable.” That score captures a positive overall reception—not consensus that the game’s deliberate approach will suit every player.
What is Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture?
Released initially on August 11, 2015, the game was developed by The Chinese Room and published by SCEA. Metacritic lists PlayStation 4 and PC as platforms. Its premise is an investigation into the last days of Yaughton Valley, a remote English community confronting events beyond its control. The developer describes nonlinear storytelling and highlights the soundtrack; PlayStation calls it a nonlinear, open-world experience.

PlayStation’s game page and The Chinese Room’s description provide the official framing. TIME’s 2015 review posed the question “Is Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture a game?”—a useful way into the divide over how much conventional gameplay the experience offers.

Why did critics praise it?
Atmosphere, visuals, and sound
The strongest positive case centers on the feeling of inhabiting a beautifully rendered countryside and listening closely to its details. The setting and soundtrack are not just decoration: they help make an otherwise quiet investigation feel uncanny and emotionally charged. The Chinese Room itself foregrounds the open world, haunting soundtrack, and nonlinear story in its description.

A mystery assembled through discovery
Rather than presenting its story as a conventional sequence of missions, the game asks players to investigate and piece together what happened in Yaughton Valley. Some positive reviews valued the freedom to uncover characters’ lives and the intelligence of the science-fiction mystery. For example, Metacritic’s PS4 page lists USgamer at 100 and GamesRadar+ at 90, with both excerpts praising aspects of the narrative and presentation. Those are illustrative high-scoring examples, not a summary of every critic’s reasoning.
GameSpot’s review listing attributes a 9/10 score to Alexa Ray Corriea. GameSpot’s review page is a useful publication-level reference for that assessment.

Why did some critics find it slow or frustrating?
Limited conventional interaction
Players looking for combat, frequent puzzles, inventory systems, or a steady stream of mechanical challenges may find little to engage with. Much of the experience consists of walking, observing, listening, and following clues. That sparseness is central to the game’s design, but whether it feels contemplative or inert is a matter of fit.
Deliberate movement and navigation
TIME’s August 2015 review criticized the very slow pace and described navigation problems when the world opens up, while also valuing the setting and audio fragments. Metacritic’s PS4 page likewise includes a PlayStation Universe excerpt arguing that limited activity and slow movement weaken the impact. These examples show the shape of the disagreement; they should not be mistaken for a statistical explanation of all mixed or negative reviews.

Is it likely to suit you?
The most useful way to interpret the reviews is to ask what you want from an exploration game:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Story and characters: Does a fragmented mystery and character-focused writing appeal to you, or do you prefer a clearly directed plot?
- Atmosphere and presentation: Is an English countryside setting, visual detail, and soundtrack enough to sustain your interest?
- Exploration: Do you enjoy following environmental cues and discovering events out of sequence, even when the route is not always obvious?
- Pace and interaction: Are slow walking and minimal conventional gameplay welcome, or do you want regular action and mechanical challenges?
If atmosphere and gradual discovery are the draw, the positive reviews explain the game’s appeal. If you need frequent active challenges or brisk movement, the criticism points to a real risk of frustration.
