What is Mounts of Mayhem, and when did it release?
Mounts of Mayhem is Minecraft’s fourth game drop of 2025. Mojang describes game drops as more frequent updates released during the year, rather than one annual game update. The drop launched on December 9, 2025, for Java and Bedrock; the corresponding release-note versions are Java Edition 1.21.11 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.130. What does the spear do?
The spear is a tiered weapon available in wood, copper, iron, gold, diamond, and Netherite. Its two attacks reward different approaches: jab is for close-range use, while charge can exploit movement to damage and dismount mounted enemies. The detailed mechanics below are from the Java Edition 1.21.11 notes, so edition-specific behavior should be checked against the relevant release notes.
Jab and the Lunge enchantment
Jab is the spear’s close-range attack. Its exclusive Lunge enchantment propels the player horizontally in the direction they are looking. Lunge consumes hunger according to its enchantment level and requires at least six hunger points to activate.

Charge depends on more than holding the attack
Charge is performed by holding the secondary action. Its damage depends on the spear material, the player’s view angle, and the velocity of both the player and the target. At sufficient speed and with a suitable angle, the attack can damage and knock back an enemy and dismount a mounted foe. Later stages of the attack have reduced effects. In practice, treat charge as a timing-and-positioning move: simply holding it or moving faster is not, by itself, a guarantee of maximum damage.

How do you tame the new mounts?
Nautilus
The Nautilus is a neutral aquatic mob. Tame it with pufferfish or a bucket of pufferfish, then equip a saddle to ride it. Java Edition 1.21.11 notes say a tamed Nautilus can also wear armor and takes suffocation damage on land, so keep it in water when possible.
Zombie Nautilus
A Zombie Nautilus appears with a drowned rider. The player guide recommends unseating the rider, then using pufferfish to tame the mount. The Java notes also describe a Coral variant in warm oceans; it functions like the regular Zombie Nautilus. The normal and Zombie Nautilus provide underwater speed and the Breath of the Nautilus effect when ridden: the effect stops the rider’s air bubbles from decreasing. That makes them useful for underwater travel, but it does not mean the mount can be taken onto land without risk.

Camel Husk
A Camel Husk encounter features two hostile riders: a spear-wielding husk and a Parched, a new desert skeleton that shoots arrows of Weakness. Both riders are described as immune to sunlight in the release announcement. The encounter is about defeating the riders so you can tame the Camel Husk; the camel itself is not described as attacking independently. Keep track of both enemies rather than focusing only on the mount.
Zombie Horse
Zombie Horses now spawn naturally in Survival and can be tamed using the same general method as regular Horses, according to the Java release notes. The release announcement describes them at night with zombie riders wielding spears. Deal with the hostile rider before trying to claim the horse: the release notes identify the rider, not the mount, as the source of hostility.

For Java Edition 1.21.11, Horses, Mules, Donkeys, and Camels no longer sink in water when ridden by a player; Skeleton Horses are the stated exception. Netherite Horse Armor is made by upgrading Diamond Horse Armor at a Smithing Table. The notes also list Nautilus Armor in copper, iron, gold, diamond, and Netherite tiers. They do not establish recipe or acquisition details for those Nautilus Armor tiers here, so do not assume their materials alone explain how to obtain them.

The new content is gameplay delivered through Minecraft updates, not a separate product readers need to buy to use these features. Bedrock’s release information notes that Marketplace access and some platform online subscriptions may be sold separately where applicable; those notices are not a separate Mounts of Mayhem charge.
