Overwatch: Classic is a limited-time mode inside Overwatch, not a separate game. Its first event recreated the original May 2016 patch 1.0 experience, but a later event called a classic format added modern gameplay features. That distinction matters: “Classic” has not always meant an identical return to the original rules.
What is Overwatch: Classic?
Blizzard introduced Overwatch: Classic as a temporary mode that revisits earlier versions of Overwatch. The first event, announced on November 11, 2024, returned to the game’s original May 2016 launch version. Those figures describe the original game’s content, not the number of options available in every later Classic event. The first event used the original roster and launch maps with Quick Play rules, including no hero limits.
How did the first event compare with the 2025 classic format?
Blizzard later used a classic format for a separate temporary event. Its March 2025 patch notes described a version that ran from March 18 through April 20, 2025, and combined classic elements with modern gameplay additions. It was not the same as the original patch 1.0 recreation.

The comparison is limited to details Blizzard stated in its March 2025 patch notes; it is not a complete chronology of every mode that has used a Classic label.
Is Overwatch Classic still available?
The reviewed official announcements do not confirm that Overwatch: Classic is permanently available or currently active. Blizzard’s original FAQ said the mode could return, but did not give a schedule. A May 12, 2026 announcement about rotating returning modes does not specifically name Overwatch: Classic. What was Overwatch like in 2016?
The original launch version was a smaller, earlier form of the game: Blizzard’s description of patch 1.0 lists 21 heroes, 12 maps, and four game modes. The first Classic event aimed to bring back that starting experience, including the launch roster and maps and an initial ruleset without hero limits. It should be understood as a return to a particular historical version, not a claim that the modern game has those same limits or content.

What should you check before joining a Classic event?
- Which version is being offered: Look for whether an announcement identifies the May 2016 patch 1.0 recreation or describes a modified classic format.
- Rules and additions: Check hero limits and any modern systems such as Perks; these can change the feel of a mode even when it is called Classic.
- Dates and availability: Treat a past event window as historical, not as evidence that the mode is live now. Confirm the current listing in-game or consult a current official announcement.
