State of Decay 3 is in alpha and targeted for release in 2027. Undead Labs and Xbox have announced Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, PlayStation 5 and cloud access, with Xbox saying the game is planned for day-one Game Pass. The first official gameplay reveal arrived in June 2026; closed beta playtests were planned before the end of 2026, but no exact release or beta date has been announced.
When does State of Decay 3 come out?
Undead Labs said in September 2026 that development remained active, the game was in alpha, and its target was still 2027. That is a target, not a confirmed launch date. No exact release day or month has been announced in the official sources covered here. Xbox Wire’s August 2026 update likewise described closed beta playtests as planned before the end of that year, not as a dated event.

The studio’s status changed in September 2026: Undead Labs announced that it had become independent. It said State of Decay 3 remained in active development, with the 2027 target and announced platforms unchanged. The announced platforms and access routes are Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, PlayStation 5 and cloud. Xbox also lists Xbox Play Anywhere support for Xbox console and PC. Platform and service availability can vary by region, and final launch details have not been specified.

Xbox says State of Decay 3 is planned for day-one Game Pass inclusion. No price, preorder window, or separate-purchase details are announced in the official sources covered here, so there is not yet enough information to compare the cost of subscribing with buying the game. Game Pass availability and terms should be checked again near launch.

What kind of game is State of Decay 3?
It is a survival sandbox built around keeping a survivor community alive. Official descriptions focus on recruiting survivors, scavenging, claiming and building settlements, crafting, reinforcing defenses and pushing back a zombie threat. Permadeath remains a risk, making the survival of individual community members part of the stakes. Xbox Wire’s June 2026 interview and the Xbox product page describe the game’s announced premise and systems.
The first official gameplay reveal was released in June 2026. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt said the footage was captured from the game: “Everything shown in the trailer is from the game. We did not use CGI.” He also said State of Decay 3 is being built in Unreal Engine 5. Those are developer statements about the reveal and technology, not independent performance findings.

Can you play State of Decay 3 co-op?
Yes. Xbox Wire says the game supports solo play and shared-world co-op for up to four players. In co-op, players can start a community together and shape it through their choices. Patzelt described the playable space as about four times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map, and said it is open to players from the moment they join. This is the creative director’s comparison; no measured area or square-mile figure has been announced. The comparison also does not establish how the world is divided into maps or how its size relates to the full campaign.

What is new about the zombies and combat?
Patzelt said Plague Nests are dynamic enemy hubs that players can enter and destroy temporarily. He described them as an evolution of the dynamic Plague Heart experience in State of Decay 2. He also said the earlier game had one attack button while State of Decay 3 has two. Those details indicate changes to combat and enemy encounters, but they do not amount to a complete account of the combat system or its final balance.
Can I get into a State of Decay 3 beta?
Alpha testing began in April 2026. Undead Labs said closed beta playtests were planned before the end of 2026, but did not announce exact dates or the odds of being selected. The official State of Decay 3 website provides the current route to playtest information and registration. Signing up is a chance to be considered, not a guarantee of access.

In an August 2026 update, Undead Labs said alpha testers had been giving feedback on combat, lighting, sound, weather, visuals, clothing and character movement. The studio said it was using that feedback as development continued; the list is not a promise that each area is final or that the game has reached beta.
What has not been announced?
The official sources covered here do not establish an exact release date, price, preorder window, physical edition, detailed PC system requirements, performance targets, cross-play, cross-progression, full campaign structure or complete roster of gameplay systems. They also do not give a measured map area or a beta schedule and selection rate. Treat claims about those details as unconfirmed unless Undead Labs or Xbox announces them.
