EVGA showcased ROBOCLOCKER at Computex 2018 as an automated liquid-nitrogen cooling system for extreme benchmark overclocking. It was designed to regulate LN2 delivery to a processor and as many as four graphics cards, reducing the need for an operator to pour nitrogen continuously.

Despite the “closed-loop” description, ROBOCLOCKER was not a sealed AIO cooler or a consumer product. It remained dependent on an external liquid-nitrogen supply and was presented as specialized, non-consumer equipment.

What EVGA’s ROBOCLOCKER did

Traditional liquid-nitrogen overclocking requires an operator to monitor a cooling pot and repeatedly pour LN2 from a thermos or dewar. ROBOCLOCKER attempted to automate that process.

The system drew liquid nitrogen from a primary tank, delivered it to the cooling hardware, monitored temperatures, and adjusted the cooling response through software and a custom wireless controller connected to a laptop. When the nitrogen absorbed heat and evaporated, the resulting gas was collected in a secondary tank.

  • INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
  • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard

That arrangement was intended to turn a labor-intensive manual process into a regulated temperature-control system. The available contemporary report does not establish that the captured gas was reliquefied or reused, so it is more accurate to describe the setup as collecting nitrogen gas rather than recycling it.

When and where was ROBOCLOCKER unveiled?

EVGA’s system was reported on June 4, 2018, in connection with Computex 2018. The project was associated with EVGA overclockers Vince “KINGPIN” Lucido and Illya “TiN” Tsemenko.

“Unveiled” should be understood as a technology demonstration or showcase, not as the launch of a conventional retail cooler. The contemporary coverage described ROBOCLOCKER as non-consumer equipment and did not provide a retail price, release date, order page, or production model number. HotHardware’s report is the available source for these details.

Why extreme overclockers use liquid nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen boils at approximately −196 °C at atmospheric pressure. Its extremely low temperature can provide substantially more thermal headroom than air or water cooling during short benchmark runs, allowing overclockers to experiment with higher voltages and clock speeds.

LN2 is not, however, a practical everyday PC coolant. It evaporates continuously, requires specialized storage and transfer equipment, and can produce condensation on cold components. Motherboards, graphics cards, sockets, and nearby surfaces need careful insulation and preparation. A benchmark configuration that works for a brief competitive run should not automatically be treated as a stable 24/7 overclock.

What changed compared with manual LN2 cooling?

With a conventional setup, the overclocker must watch the temperature and add nitrogen as the cooling pot warms. Pouring too little can allow temperatures to rise; pouring too much can make temperature control more difficult. Workloads also change the heat output of the processor and graphics cards.

ROBOCLOCKER was intended to respond automatically to those changes. Its potential advantages included:

  • Less repeated manual pouring during benchmark sessions
  • More consistent temperature regulation
  • Reduced operator workload while tuning voltage, frequency, and benchmark settings
  • Potentially lower nitrogen consumption
  • Centralized management of a multi-component test platform

KINGPIN reportedly said the system used “a lot less LN2,” but the available coverage does not provide a controlled consumption figure or test methodology. That makes lower usage a reported design benefit, not an independently measured performance result.

One CPU and up to four GPUs

The reported configuration could cool one processor and as many as four graphics cards. That capacity is important: ROBOCLOCKER was built around an open benchmark platform, not a single-chip desktop cooling solution installed in an ordinary case.

Supporting several graphics cards also explains why automation could be useful. A competitive overclocker managing a CPU and multiple GPUs has more temperatures and workloads to monitor than someone cooling a single processor. A centralized controller could reduce the amount of manual intervention required during a run.

Did ROBOCLOCKER break world records?

According to the contemporary report, KINGPIN credited ROBOCLOCKER with helping break five 3DMark world records. That claim should remain attributed to KINGPIN.

The available evidence does not identify the exact records, hardware configurations, scores, or whether those results remain world records today. It also does not prove that the cooling system alone caused the results. Benchmark records depend on the complete platform, including the processor, graphics cards, motherboard, memory, power delivery, firmware, operating system, settings, and the skill of the overclocker.

Why “closed loop” does not mean “AIO cooler”

ROBOCLOCKER’s terminology can be misleading if read as a description of a normal sealed PC cooler. It was not:

  • A 120, 240, 280, or 360 mm all-in-one water cooler
  • A sealed desktop liquid-cooling loop
  • A drop-in CPU cooler for a gaming PC
  • A maintenance-free system with coolant permanently contained inside the cooler
  • A refrigeration system that operated without external consumables

Here, “closed loop” referred to the automated supply, control, and gas-handling arrangement around the LN2 setup. The system still required a primary tank of liquid nitrogen and specialized cooling hardware. It did not make cryogenic cooling suitable for an ordinary PC case.

Automation did not remove the hazards

Automating nitrogen delivery could reduce manual work, but it could not eliminate the risks of extreme overclocking. Liquid nitrogen can cause severe cold injuries, and rapidly expanding nitrogen gas can create an oxygen-displacement hazard in poorly ventilated spaces. Cryogenic liquids also require suitable dewars, hoses, fittings, and handling procedures; they should never be stored in an inappropriate sealed container.

Condensation remained a major PC-specific concern. Keeping a target temperature stable does not stop moisture from forming on cold hardware. Insulation around the socket, motherboard, graphics cards, and exposed metal surfaces is still necessary, and ROBOCLOCKER should not be interpreted as a built-in condensation-prevention system.

Automation also adds its own possible failure points, including inaccurate temperature sensors, incorrect control targets, software or controller failures, wireless communication loss, transfer-system problems, an inadequate LN2 supply, or an issue with gas collection. These are inherent engineering considerations, not documented ROBOCLOCKER failures.

Why a system like this was useful to benchmark competitors

ROBOCLOCKER addressed a narrow but real problem: the operator’s attention is valuable during a record attempt. Instead of constantly managing nitrogen, the overclocker could spend more time adjusting clocks, voltage, memory timings, workload behavior, and benchmark settings.

The system also aimed to improve repeatability. Manual pouring can create temperature swings, while automated control can theoretically keep the cooling hardware closer to a chosen target. That does not guarantee better scores or stable operation, but it can make the process more controlled and less labor-intensive.

The trade-off was considerable complexity. The setup needed control electronics, sensors, software, transfer hardware, cooling pots, insulation, a suitable benching platform, and an ongoing cryogenic supply. For competitive overclockers, that complexity could be worthwhile. For a gaming or workstation PC, it would be unnecessary and impractical.

Was ROBOCLOCKER ever sold?

No verified consumer launch or retail price was reported in the available coverage. There is no supported basis for describing ROBOCLOCKER as a currently purchasable EVGA cooler, and the contemporary report characterized it as non-consumer equipment.

That does not by itself prove that no related internal or specialized system ever existed later. It means only that no retail availability, warranty coverage, production specification, or commercial successor is established by the available evidence.

Several practical factors would make mainstream commercialization difficult: the need for a bulk LN2 supply, ventilation and safety requirements, condensation management, specialized insulation and cooling pots, installation complexity, and a very small audience outside competitive benchmarking. Those are reasonable engineering and market constraints, not a confirmed statement from EVGA about why the project did not become a mass-market product.

ROBOCLOCKER’s place in extreme PC hardware

EVGA’s project was significant less because it created a new everyday cooler than because it automated part of an established extreme-overclocking workflow. It treated LN2 cooling as an instrumentation and control problem: monitor the temperature, regulate the supply, and reduce the operator’s repetitive work.

For readers encountering the announcement years later, the key distinction is simple: ROBOCLOCKER was an experimental or specialized benchmark platform, not an LN2 version of an AIO water cooler. It demonstrated how far competitive overclockers could push automation while still depending on the demanding logistics and safety requirements of liquid nitrogen.
