PlayStation controllers did not change in a single decade: their evolution spans from the original PlayStation Control Pad in 1995 to the customizable DualSense Edge, launched globally in 2023. The clearest shifts came in stages—twin sticks, vibration, motion sensing, and then more detailed tactile feedback and control customization.
How the PlayStation controller layout took shape
1995: The original PlayStation Control Pad
Sony’s retrospective dates the original PlayStation Control Pad to 1995. Its defining layout combined a directional pad with the four now-familiar shapes: triangle, circle, X, and square. Sony’s controller history presents that arrangement as the starting point for the line.
1997: Dual Analog adds twin sticks
In 1997, Sony added a pair of thumb sticks with the Dual Analog controller. This introduced a second way to control movement and perspective alongside the D-pad, establishing a layout that would become central to later PlayStation gamepads.
1998: DualShock brings vibration
The 1998 DualShock kept the twin-stick approach and added vibration feedback. Sony describes it as the first PlayStation controller with that feature, using two motors to produce differentiated vibration effects. That made physical feedback part of the controller’s design, rather than relying only on what players saw or heard.

What changed from DualShock 2 to the PS3 era?
2000: DualShock 2 refines the familiar design
Sony describes the DualShock 2 as similar in overall appearance to the original DualShock, but with more accurate analog sticks, textured stick surfaces, and pressure-sensitive face buttons. The evolution here was refinement: the recognizable form remained while the inputs became more nuanced.
2006–2007: Sixaxis motion sensing and DualShock 3 vibration
The PS3-era Sixaxis tracked movement across six axes and operated wirelessly, according to Sony. The 2007 DualShock 3 then combined Sixaxis functionality with vibration feedback. Together, these controllers show two distinct developments: sensing how the player moved the controller and restoring rumble in a controller that also supported motion control.

- Aim and move with precision by swapping in fresh stick modules* so you’re always playing with equipment that’s in great shape. Plus, three types of changeable stick caps help you stay comfortable in-game without sacrificing grip or stability.
- Mappable back buttons The DualSense Edge wireless controller’s two swappable sets of back buttons can be configured to any other button input, so you’ve always got game-changing actions and essential controls at your fingertips.
- Adjustable trigger lengths Manually set the travel distance of your left and right triggers for an optimal experience with whatever you’re playing. Fast-paced FPS? Set a shorter travel distance to shoot faster on the field. Competitive racer? Set a longer travel distance for precise throttle control on the track.
- Remappable buttons Remap or even deactivate specific button inputs, so you can create a completely personalized control setup that’s ideal for the game at hand.
- Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
2010: PlayStation Move was a different kind of control
Sony’s retrospective also covers PlayStation Move, a motion-control system built around motion-focused interaction. Move belongs in the broader history of PlayStation controls, but it was not simply the next conventional gamepad in the DualShock line.
How did DualShock 4 lead to DualSense?
2013: DualShock 4 adds features such as Share
Sony’s 2020 DualSense announcement describes the PS4’s DualShock 4 as the foundation for the newer controller and points to features such as its Share button. That framing matters: DualSense built on an established design rather than abandoning the familiar PlayStation controller concept.

2020: DualSense adds haptics and adaptive triggers
For PS5, Sony identified haptic feedback and adaptive triggers as DualSense’s defining additions. Haptics can convey a wider range of tactile sensations than a simple vibration effect. Adaptive triggers can vary the resistance of L2 and R2, allowing a game to make an action feel more or less physically demanding. Both features depend on support in the game being played; their presence on the controller does not mean every game uses them.
In Sony’s 2020 announcement, then-Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said: “DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5.” That is Sony’s product-announcement description, not an independent assessment.
What is different about DualSense Edge?
Announced in 2022 and launched globally on January 26, 2023, DualSense Edge is a customization-focused PS5 controller, not a separate console-generation design. Sony says it retains DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers while adding options for players who want to tailor controls.
- Remapping and tuning: Players can remap controls and adjust stick sensitivity, dead zones, and trigger settings.
- Profiles: Saved profiles let players switch between control configurations.
- Physical customization: Swappable stick caps and configurable back buttons provide additional ways to change how the controller feels and functions.
- Replaceable stick modules: Sony documents separately sold replacement stick modules for Edge. Its materials do not establish that the standard DualSense uses the same module arrangement.
- Immersion features: Edge retains haptics and adaptive triggers, with game support required for those effects.
Sony’s 2022 announcement listed US recommended retail prices of $199.99 for DualSense Edge and $19.99 for a replacement stick module. Those are historical US launch prices, not current prices.

The bigger arc of PlayStation controller design
Across the period covered by Sony’s retrospective and later announcements—1995 through the PS5 generation—the changes came in layers. The original pad established the D-pad and four-button identity; Dual Analog added twin sticks; DualShock brought vibration; PS3-era controllers introduced motion sensing; and DualSense made tactile feedback and trigger resistance more expressive. DualSense Edge extends that line by making control configuration and some physical components more customizable.
